German zoo faces backlash after killing 12 healthy baboons over space issues

India Today6 days ago
A German zoo is facing criticism from animal rights groups and the public after killing 12 Guinea baboons this week, citing lack of space and rising internal animal conflict. The Tiergarten Nrnberg zoo, located in the city of Nuremberg, said the decision was made after years of unsuccessful efforts to relocate the baboons or control the population through other means. The killings, carried out on Tuesday, came just hours after activists attempted to storm the zoo grounds to stop the action.advertisement'This killing was avoidable and, from our point of view, is unlawful,' said Laura Zodrow of Pro Wildlife, one of the groups that has filed a criminal complaint against the zoo's management.
The zoo had warned in February 2024 that it may have to cull some of its 43 baboons due to space constraints. The enclosure, opened in 2009, was designed to house only 25 animals and their offspring. As the troop grew, so did conflict among the baboons, prompting what zoo officials described as a difficult but necessary decision. On Tuesday, the zoo announced a surprise closure for 'operational reasons,' and shortly afterward confirmed the culling of the 12 baboons. Police later said seven activists had broken into the zoo, with one woman gluing her hands to the pavement near the entrance.'The killings followed yearslong consideration,' said zoo director Dag Encke at a press conference. 'We had no viable alternative, and continuing overcrowding would have violated animal protection laws.'The zoo said the baboons selected for euthanasia were not pregnant females and were not part of ongoing scientific studies. They were shot, with samples taken for research. The carcasses were to be fed to predators within the zoo.Deputy director Jrg Beckmann defended the method, stating the decision was aimed at maintaining a healthy and stable troop. The zoo claims to have tried multiple solutions — including rehoming 16 baboons to zoos in Paris, China, and Spain since 2011 — but said all potential partners had since reached capacity. An attempt at contraceptive control was also abandoned years ago after it failed to yield results. A similar controversy erupted in 2014, when Copenhagen Zoo killed a healthy 2-year-old giraffe, butchered its carcass in front of a crowd that included children and then fed it to lions.- EndsInputs from Associated Press

The forgotten heroes of history: How 16,000 pigeons became secret agents during World War II

Some of history's darkest moments are witness to unlikely heroes, who emerged like a blessing disguise. One such story involves humble birds, like the homing pigeons that served as silent but vital secret agents, during World War II. Even though they are overlooked in mainstream history, these feathered messengers became crucial to the Resistance movements used across Nazi-occupied Europe. Their handlers were ordinary villagers and not spies, who risked everything to provide invaluable information to British intelligence. These pigeons flew messages into the hands of the little-known branch of British military intelligence specializing in German-occupied territories. The forgotten spy heroes of history Operation Columba, which was a secret WWII pigeon spy mission run by MI14's Special Pigeon Service, saw British intelligence drop around 16,000 homing pigeons into Nazi-occupied countries between 1941 and 1944. Each crate was placed with rice paper, a small pencil, instructions, and often a recent newspaper to establish credibility of the information. Villagers across France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Denmark found these birds and used them to send intel about troop strength, radar and rocket site from the front lines. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Duong Dai Lo Hung Vuong: Unsold Furniture Liquidation 2024 (Prices May Surprise You) Unsold Furniture | Search Ads Learn More Undo Roughly 10 % of the pigeons returned, but that small percentage yielded over a thousand vital messages, which was enough to influence Allied strategic decisions. According to Smithsonian magazine, some messages came from the Belgian resistance cell code-named Leopold Vindictive, led by Father Joseph Raskin. His intelligence reached as high as Winston Churchill and prompted MI6 to parachute agents behind enemy lines to support the network. Sadly, Raskin and several members were eventually betrayed, arrested, and executed near the war's end. Pigeons also faced dreadful deaths Among these pigeons, many were shot down, captured by German hawk handlers, or simply eaten by starving civilians before they could carry their messages home. Yet the missions that succeeded had huge impact, some messages helped identify German radar sites shooting down RAF bombers, others warned of rocket launch areas targeting London. Out of this daring experiment, several pigeons earned the Dickin Medal, the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross, for bravery and service. Famously, pigeons like Commando and William of Orange carried life-saving intelligence on dozens of missions, including messages that helped save over 2,000 soldiers. From their secret service roles in military intelligence, the image of pigeons completely changed. Once seen merely as common birds, they came to be acknowledged as wartime heroes. Their legacy reminds us that even in the age of developed warfare, spirit and simplicity can perform extraordinary tasks beyond expectations.

Major breakthrough in search for Hitler's gold train! Signs of treasure worth billions of dollars found in..., excavation...

Who doesn't know Adolf Hitler? He is arguably the most recognizable figure in modern history. Known for his smaller moustache and intense speeches, Hitler was the leader of Nazi Germany and was responsible for the darkest parts of the 20th century, including the Second World War and the Holocaust. He is a name that almost everyone knows, decades after his passing, and remains controversial. What is the mystery behind Hitler's gold train? Archaeologists in Poland made a significant advancement in investigating a new archaeological find. It may even lead to the discovery of the famous Nazi train rumored to be carrying treasure worth £250 million. Excavation work has commenced in Poland at Dziemiany, where researchers think a late World War II bunker could have been located. Underneath it could hide a unique train and treasure. Marcin Tymiński, conservator of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, has stated that there may be an undiscovered German depot at the location. The quest for Adolf Hitler's legendary gold-filled train has been going on for quite a while. Since 1945, governments, the Polish army, and treasure seekers have been combing the area in hopes of catching a glimpse of the train, and now they believe it is in northern Poland. According to Wirtualna Polska, Polish authorities have officially granted permission for a new search. According to The U.S. Sun report, Gdańsk's Office for the Protection of Monuments has reportedly issued permits for exploratory drilling and archaeological examinations in Dziemiany, which is located in the Kościerzyna area of northern Poland. The investigation intends to locate a suspected World War II bunker that could be concealing the long-rumored Nazi train and its treasure. Marcin Tymiński, a spokesman for the Pomeranian Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments, stated a concealed German depot could be located in Dziemiany. 'Some speculate it could even be the lost Amber Room,' he was quoted as saying by The Sun. Who is leading the current search operation? According to Jan Delingowski, a leader in the hunt for treasure stated that a military training ground was set up in Dziemiany for SS units in late 1943 by the Nazis. Delingowski, who used to work as a radio officer for a merchant fleet, has been searching for the mythical train in the Kashubia area for the last decade. Who was Erich Koch? In an interview on the YouTube channel History Hiking on Sunday, he showed historical references linking the suspected treasure site to Nazi official Erich Koch, according to RMF24. Koch had been the Nazi Gauleiter in East Prussia from 1928-1945. After World War II, Koch was tried in Poland and was sentenced in 1959 for war crimes. Koch received the death sentence; however, his death sentence was never executed, officially because of ill health. Lately, declassified materials from Poland's Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), reported by Rzeczpospolita, show that the reason the sentence was not executed was that the Polish Security Service and Soviet KGB thought he might reveal the hiding place of the Nazi gold train. A prisoner who met Koch in the 1980s claimed the Nazi official disclosed the site of the treasure shortly before he died.
