Questioning Australia's future as Lions opponents is ‘insulting'
Australian rugby is facing significant challenges on and off the field and is the weakest of the three nations visited by the elite of British and Irish rugby, with South Africa and New Zealand completing the 12-year rotation.

Furthermore, there is growing support for the Lions to visit France because of the strength of their national side and club game, as well as the commercial possibilities.
The Wallabies answered their critics at Melbourne Cricket Ground by taking the second Test to the wire in an all-time classic before falling 2-0 behind in the series when Hugo Keenan struck with 51 seconds left.
When asked if Australia had earned the right to host another tour, Farrell replied: 'It was never off the agenda, in my opinion.
'Every single team, country and province have their ups and downs but Australia – the sporting nation that they are – are always going to come back.
'Have a look at the year they've got coming up. Come the 2027 World Cup they're going to be a force to be reckoned with, 100 per cent.
'It would be tragic not to tour here. We've had a blast. To me its insulting to talk about it in that kind of way.'
Ryan replaces Ollie Chessum amid praise from Farrell for the 'venom' he shows when taking on the unglamorous work up-front, while Kinghorn has been preferred ahead of James Lowe thanks to his 'unpredictability' and the strength of his aerial game in what should be wet and windy conditions at Accor Stadium.
But Farrell's warmest words were reserved for those players who had not participated in the series yet, having fully embraced the task of preparing the Test team to face the Wallabies.
'It actually touches you. It touches you in the sense of how much it means to them,' said Farrell, who by Saturday night will have used 27 players in the three matches against Australia.
'The ones who were celebrating most on Saturday night were the ones who hadn't put the shirt on. That says it all.
'We all came together from day one and said 'the only thing that matters is the squad and that's it, full stop'. So we've all been in this together from day one.'
Farrell's success as Lions head coach – as well as his obvious passion for the concept – makes him overwhelming favourite to lead the next tour to New Zealand, but he is refusing to look beyond attending an Oasis concert at Croke Park upon his return home.

'Would I do this again? Give me a break would you! Let me get through Saturday. I have absolutely loved every single minute and I knew I would because I just love everything that the Lions is about,' he said.
'Thinking about the future is not something that is on my mind until I get home and have a bit of reflection on the whole thing.
'I'm definitely going to Oasis and that's why I'm going home! I'll be taking a few friends. There are a few coaches here that are trying to get on the bandwagon.'

F1 2025 mid-season driver ratings: Piastri and Norris battle for top spot
Following Lando Norris' victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, Formula 1 is now on its summer break and will return at the end of August for the Dutch Grand Prix. After years of Max Verstappen domination, 2025 has all been about McLaren, with Oscar Piastri and Norris battling it out for the championship. Elsewhere, Lewis Hamilton's first year at Ferrari isn't going to plan, while Red Bull decided to part ways with Christian Horner after 20 years. Here's how we've rated all 21 drivers on the grid after the first 14 races of the 2025 season: 10 = Perfection 9 = Outstanding 8 = Great 7 = Good 6 = Decent 5 = Acceptable 4 = Underwhelming 3 = Poor 2 = Very Poor 1 = Back to Formula 2 It's hard to believe that Piastri is only in his third season of F1, such is the the 24-year-old's incredible speed and calmness behind the wheel. Aiming to become the first Australian to win the championship since Alan Jones 45 years ago, Piastri goes into the summer break with six wins and a nine point lead over Norris. After slipping behind his teammate and crashing out in Canada, Norris could well have crumbled but statement wins in Austria, Silverstone and Hungary have strengthened his title credentials. The Brit has the speed to win the championship – as evidenced by his five victories – but little mistakes are costing him. He must be flawless in the second-half of the season. Given Red Bull's car is an absolute menace to drive, Verstappen should be applauded for being third in the standings, picking up impressive wins in Japan and Imola. Unfortunately, there are still question marks regarding the four-time champion's temperament after deliberately crashing into George Russell in Spain. An outstanding victory in Canada highlights a fantastic season for Russell so far, with the Brit going from strength-to-strength. Remarkably, Mercedes still haven't agreed a new contract with him, but with the option to sign Verstappen gone, Russell is almost certainly keeping his place as Silver Arrows' No.1 driver. Ferrari's car isn't up to scratch, but Leclerc has managed to get five podiums out of it. Any suggestion that he'd struggle against Hamilton has also been dismissed – he's beaten his new teammate in 10/11 of the 12/13 races they've both finished. A sprint race victory in China proved to be a false dawn for the seven-time world champion, whose dream move to the Scuderia is turning into a nightmare. Yet to finish on the podium, with communication problems with his engineers affecting performance. There has been improvement in the last few races, so maybe not all hope is lost. After a bright start, the Italian has failed to score points in six of the last eight races, which included a heavy crash with Verstappen in Austria. That said, he is an 18-year-old rookie with bags of potential who should have a bright future at Mercedes – provided they give him a new contract. The best of the rest and by some distance, Albon has scored more points in 2025 than he has in the last three seasons combined, demonstrating Williams' fantastic progression under James Vowles. Unquestionably the driver of the season – outside of the McLarens – the German was already enjoying a great year before finishing third at Silverstone after a remarkable drive from 17th – the first podium of his 15-year career. While he lacks the eye-catching results of Albon and Hulkenberg, Ocon has done well to sneak into the top 10 in the standings while adjusting to his new team. Took the two-time champion nine races to get some points on the board but things have been looking decent since then. It's clear Aston Martin are waiting for 2026 when they'll have an Adrian Newey designed car. Level on points with his teammate, great drives in Australia and Great Britain demonstrate the Canadian's skill in wet conditions. Amid the chaos at both Red Bull teams, Hadjar is enjoying a stellar rookie campaign, having recovered from crashing out on the formation lap on his debut in Australia. Too soon to promote him to Verstappen's teammate? A tough season for Alpine who have the slowest car but Gasly has still managed to show his quality, finishing in the points on four occasions, including a great drive to sixth at Silverstone. Started the season at Red Bull but was demoted after just two races. Yuki Tsunoda's struggles prove Lawson wasn't all to blame and after a very shaky start the Kiwi's form is picking up. After a stellar 2024, the former Ferrari man is struggling to adapt to his new team. Some good results but the gap between himself and Albon will be concerning. The Brazilian's F1 career began slow but has steadily improved with three points finishes in the last four races. One to watch for the second-half of the year. Finally given a chance to prove himself in the senior team following Lawson's demotion but cannot get to grips with the RB21. Car trouble aside, scoring seven points compared to Verstappen's 148 is simply not good enough. The Brit hasn't done a lot wrong in his rookie season but keeps just missing out on the points. Last top-10 finish was Bahrain back in April and he's now last of the full-time drivers. Alpine axed Jack Doohan to bring Colapinto back to the grid but it's a gamble that hasn't worked, with the Argentine yet to score points and unable to replicate his superb form from last year. The Australian wasn't great but definitely did not deserve to be dumped after just six races. No points but as Colapinto has since proved, the car isn't good enough. Chelsea sign 19-year-old Netherlands defender Jorrel Hato from Ajax
The 19-year-old, who has been capped six times by his country, has signed a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge. He becomes the Blues' eighth signing of the summer transfer window. 'I'm very excited, I'm so happy to be here,' Hato, who can operate in central defence or at left-back, told the Premier League club's website. Chelsea is the best place for me to do that so I'm very happy.' He scored four goals in 111 appearances for the Eredivisie giants, with his international debut coming as a substitute in a 6–0 win against Gibraltar in November 2023. David Gray delighted as Hibernian respond to Midtjylland loss with win at Dundee
The Easter Road boss admitted it was a 'difficult' decision to make just one change to the side that started Thursday's extra-time defeat by Midtjylland in the Europa League. However, Gray was rewarded with a strong display as Kieron Bowie's first-half double proved enough to overcome a Dee side who pulled one back through Fin Robertson. 'I'm delighted because after everything the players put in Thursday night, everybody would be looking at today's game wondering would there be a hangover, how will the players react the first time they went Thursday-Sunday,' the manager said. 'The players reacted in the best possible way with a real professional performance. I thought we controlled the game from start to finish.' Gray was heartened to see recently-capped Scotland forward Bowie get off the mark so early in the campaign after he endured an injury-disrupted first season at Hibs. 'That's the reason he was brought to the club,' he said. 'He's suited to Scottish football as well, with the physicality, he really enjoys that side to the game. 'The confidence levels will be high with the Scottish recognition as well, which is fantastic for him on a personal note, but he's working hard every day, he's getting fitter, he's getting stronger and really benefiting from a strong pre-season.' Gray was typically coy when asked about the future of defender Lewis Miller, who is understood to be close to joining Blackburn. The Australian is currently recovering from injury. 'There has been interest in him, but right now he's still a Hibs player and until he's not, my focus is on trying to get him back on the pitch as quick as we can,' he said. Dundee boss Steven Pressley said he saw some 'green shoots' of recovery against the Hibees after his side's demoralising Premier Sports Cup group-stage exit last month. However, the 51-year-old, taking charge of a match in Scotland's top flight for the first time in 15 years, felt they were 'nervy' in possession and was keen to stress the scale of the task he inherited in June. 'Almost every single goal from the team of last season was not there today,' said Pressley, whose talismanic captain Simon Murray missed out with injury. 'It's a big rebuild. I'm not trying to pull the wool over anybody's eyes. 'There's a lot of hard work ahead. We probably need another six players in to bolster the squad and it's a real challenge.'
