Ukrainian military says it hit Russian semiconductor device plant

Yahoo21-05-2025
KYIV (Reuters) -A Ukrainian drone attack hit a semiconductor devices plant in Russia's western Oryol region that supplies Russian fighter jet and missile producers, Ukraine's military said on Wednesday.
Ten drones had reached the target area and a fire had broken out, the military said on the Telegram messaging app.
It said the Bolkhovsky Semiconductor Devices Plant supplies various Russian enterprises, including some involved in the production of Iskander and Kinzhal missiles.
"This is one of the leading enterprises in the Russian Federation in the field of development and production of semiconductor devices and components," the statement said.
There was no immediate comment on the strike from Moscow, which began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Ukraine has increasingly hit back against regular Russian missile and drone attacks with a fleet of domestically produced drones.

'Oh really?': Trump says his wife Melania has some thoughts on Vladimir Putin

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump says his wife, first lady Melania Trump, has emphasized to him privately that Russian President Vladimir Putin's continued attacks on Ukraine contradict the rosy picture the Russian leader often presents in phone calls with her husband. While discussing new actions and threats aimed at pressuring Moscow to agree to a ceasefire deal, Trump twice on July 14 referenced remarks that Melania Trump ‒ who tends to keep a low profile ‒ has made to him in private about Russia's attacks. "I go home, I tell the first lady, 'You know, I spoke to Vladimir today. We had a wonderful conversation.' And she said, 'Oh really? Another city was just hit,'" Trump said during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the Oval Office. More: Trump to send Ukraine weapons through NATO, threatens secondary tariffs on Russia About an hour later, Trump told a similar story at a luncheon with the White House Faith Office, as he recounted the numerous times he thought a Russia-Ukraine peace deal was imminent. "I'd get home, I'd say, 'First lady, I had the most wonderful talk with Vladimir. I think we're finished.' And then I'll turn on the television, or she'll say to me one time, 'Wow, that's strange because they just bombed a nursing home,'" Trump said, prompting laughs among the crowd at the White House State Dining Room. More: Trump said he'd end Ukraine war in 24 hours. Now his patience with Putin is wearing thin. Growing increasingly frustrated by Putin, Trump on Monday threatened to impose 100% tariffs on Russia and its trading partners if a ceasefire is not reached in 50 days. He also pledged that the United States would send weapons to NATO to assist in Ukraine's war efforts. 'I'm disappointed in President Putin because I thought we would have had a deal two months ago, but it doesn't seem to get there," said Trump, continuing his recent criticism of the Russian president. More: Trump says he threatened to bomb Moscow if Putin invaded Ukraine, new audio shows Trump said Putin is a "tough guy" who has "fooled a lot of people" over the years, but "he didn't fool me." The president indicated he's weary of fruitless negotiations and said he wants "action." Melania Trump, a native of Slovenia, typically refrains from weighing in publicly on political and international affairs. Like she did during her husband's first term in office, she has often been absent from the White House since Trump's return to Washington. Melania Trump last Friday joined her husband during a visit to Central Texas to meet with families of victims who died in recent devastating floods there. Three Democrats win double-digit support in early 2028 presidential primary poll

Former Vice President Kamala Harris is the 2028 Democratic presidential primary frontrunner by a substantial margin, according to a poll released Monday. Harris, who lost the 2024 race in a landslide to President Trump, received 26% support from Democrats and Democrat-leaning voters in the survey conducted by Echelon Insights. 3 Harris has reportedly been planning a political comeback since losing the 2024 presidential election to Trump. REUTERS Advertisement Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and California Gov. Gavin Newsom were the only other Democrats to muster double-digit support at 11% and 10% respectively. Rounding out the top five were Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), whom 7% of Democrats said they would vote for if the primary were held today, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who garnered a 6% backing. At 3%, entrepreneur Mark Cuban led the group of political outsiders included in the survey, with sports commentator Stephen A. Smith and comedian Jon Stewart receiving 1% apiece. Advertisement Thirteen percent of voters indicated that they were unsure who they would vote for, with the primaries still more than two years away. Support for Newsom and Buttigieg increased slightly when Harris – who is reportedly mulling a run for governor in California – was not included in the poll, with both polling at 12%. Ocasio-Cortez (9%) topped and Booker (8%) in that scenario, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (7%) jumped into the top 5. 3 Newsom traveled to South Carolina last week, the state that will hold the first Democratic primary of the 2028 cycle. AP Advertisement 3 Buttigieg was the mayor of South Bend, Ind., before he served four years in the Biden administration. AP On the Republican side, Vice President JD Vance – at 42% support – held a commanding 33-point lead over his closest rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who was backed by 9% of GOP and GOP-leaning voters. Secretary of State Marco Rubio (7%), former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (6%), Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (5%) and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy (4%) were within striking distance of DeSantis, but well behind Vance. Sixteen percent of respondents were unsure about who they would vote for.
