Michigan man sentenced to prison for assaulting USPS clerk
Benjamin Gregory Shirley, 41, of East Lansing, was accused of assaulting the employee over a package that investigators later discovered included fentanyl.
Federal prosecutors say Shirley arranged for the package to be sent to Michigan from Tennessee to a P.O. Box. They say Shirley attempted to get the package at the post office, but it was mistakenly addressed to a different P.O. Box.
The worker told Shirley that she could give him the package. In response, prosecutors say Shirley jumped over the counter and wrestled with the worker over the item.
A search warrant of the package uncovered fentanyl inside a teddy bear.
"My office stands ready to investigate and prosecute those who assault federal workers; no one should be subject to attack simply for doing their job," said U.S. Attorney Timothy VerHey in a statement. "Further, my office is dedicated to combatting fentanyl trafficking, particularly through the U.S. Mail. Postal workers should be able to come to work and do their jobs without the fear of violence or drugs."

Two men missing from Inland Empire were members of same religious organization, investigators say
Investigators have released new details as they continue their search for a missing Tennessee man who was last seen at a coffee shop in Redlands in 2023. They say that they are now looking into the disappearance as a homicide. Emilio Salem Ghanem, who is believed to be in his mid-40s, was reported missing shortly after he visited a Starbucks on Redlands Boulevard on May 25, 2023, according to the Redlands Police Department. "A rented Nissan Frontier pickup that Ghanem was driving was spotted on surveillance video later that day in Grand Terrace," the release said. "Detectives have since recovered the rental truck along with other evidence." Police say that he rented the vehicle from a location in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is described as standing about 5-foot-7 and weighing approximately 130 pounds with hazel eyes and black hair. He was 40 at the time of his disappearance, police said. Police say that Ghanem was a member of "His Way Spirit Led Assemblies," a religious organization based in Hemet. They say that he left the organization shortly before he disappeared, and that he also worked for Fullshield, Inc. a pest control business owned and operated by the religious group. The business now operates under the name Maxguard, police said. While looking into his disappearance, RPD detectives learned that another man who was a member of His Way Spirit Led Assemblies was also reported missing in recent years. That case is being investigated by Claremont Police Department, who say that 49-year-old Ruben Moreno was reported missing in August 2019 and has not been seen since. They noted that he was also a member of the same religious organization as Ghanem. Moreno is described as standing 5-foot-6 and weighing about 180 pounds. He has brown eyes and black hair. Neighbors on high alert after 57-year-old woman stabbed multiple times in Towson
Baltimore County Police are searching for suspects after a woman was stabbed in the Towson area on Thursday. The assault happened just around 7 a.m. on Thursday, according to police. "It's very upsetting. It's extremely upsetting to think that somebody would come through... who would just disturb the peace," said Drew Luckenbach, a Towson resident. Nothing out of the ordinary typically happens here in the neighborhood by Glen Keith Boulevard in Towson, according to Luckenbach. Now, the neighborhood is on edge. "Yesterday morning, I was a little tired. I slept about a half an hour later than I usually do. And when I came out the door, there were police cars and an ambulance just leaving the scene right here," Luckenbach reported. According to Baltimore County Police, they arrived on the scene Thursday morning, just around 7, and found a 57-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds. "Talking with the neighbors, I found out it was a woman I usually see when I wake up on time. I know nothing about her, I just say hi, give her a nice smile," Luckenbach added. Right now, it's not clear if the victim knew the suspects or if this was a random attack, but Luckenbach says that until they know, neighbors are on high alert. "Everybody is now thinking twice, watching behind their back, making sure doors are locked, making sure they're not by themselves," Luckenbach said. According to Baltimore County crime data, there have been 119 victims of various crimes reported in the 21286 zip code area in 2025. The majority of those crimes are theft offenses, with 56 cases being reported. Assault offenses take the second spot with 22 cases and 33 victims within 2025. In December of 2024, a mass shooting in Towson left nine people injured and one person dead near their homes.

Family holds balloon release for brother and sister killed in Detroit vehicle crash
Family members of a brother and sister who were killed in a crash earlier this week came together on Friday to remember the duo as they come to terms with what happened. Less than 72 hours ago, Catone and Joshaundra Scott were killed when the vehicle they were in crashed into a furniture building in the early morning hours of July 30. Police believe the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed. A fourth person in the vehicle was listed in critical condition at an area hospital. "I sat at the edge of my bed in disbelief. I had to hear it over and over again, and even when I still heard it, I still didn't believe it," said their cousin, Angel Brinson. Family members say it hasn't hit them that the siblings are gone, especially since Catone Scott, a father of five, was released from prison hours before the crash. "I (had) seen them that same day, like 5 o'clock, coming from Woodward and Manchester, buying his (Catone Scott) outfits," said Kevina Scott, a cousin. The family says it has been a rough few years as they've lost multiple family members. Two weeks ago, they buried an aunt. "It's no breathing in between. It's like we trying to figure out why we getting hit so hard," Kevina Scott said. The family says the siblings were full of life and were close. They say that while Catone Scott was in prison, Joshaundra Scott was the one who stepped in to help his children. As they honor the two people, they seek respect from the community. They also have advice for Metro Detroit residents. "Stop speeding, it's not worth it. You can get your life snatched away just like that," said Brinson.
