World Bank Approves US$30 Million to Support Financial Inclusion and Education in Yemen

Yemen Online19-06-2025

The World Bank's Board of Executive Directors approved US$30 million in new grants to Yemen to help strengthen digital financial infrastructure and sustain access to basic education for children in most disadvantaged areas. The financing supports two new operations that aim to improve access to critical services while bolstering institutional resilience.
The first grant of US$20 million will finance the Yemen Financial Market Infrastructure and Inclusion Project, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The second, a US$10 million grant, will support the Sustaining Education and Learning Project, implemented by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
More than a decade into the conflict, Yemen remains one of the most fragile and poorest countries in the world. The crisis has deeply disrupted the provision of public services, fragmented institutions, and contributed to the erosion of human capital. Today, more than 60 percent of households report inadequate food consumption, and access to quality education and formal financial services remains limited, particularly for women and rural populations. The World Bank's support to Yemen prioritizes the delivery of essential services while building the foundations for medium-term recovery.
'These new operations reflect our continued commitment to supporting the people of Yemen in meeting their most urgent needs,' said Dina Abu-Ghaida, World Bank Group Country Manager for Yemen. 'By investing in core -infrastructure that enable children to stay in school and families to access financial services, we aim to preserve human capital and support more inclusive, resilient service delivery.'
The Yemen Financial Market Infrastructure and Inclusion Project will support the development of digital payments systems, including a Fast Payment System and a Real Time Gross Settlement System under the Central Bank in Aden. The project will promote interoperability among financial institutions, strengthen compliance with anti-money laundering regulations, and expand access points for digital financial services in underserved areas. It will also enable the digitization of cash transfers, government payments, and remittances, which are critical sources of income for vulnerable households.
The Sustaining Education and Learning Project will help keep schools open and functioning in targeted vulnerable districts by financing the rehabilitation of school infrastructure, construction of classrooms and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities, and provision of school grants, managed by communities, to cover essential operational needs. The project will also strengthen education data systems and support local capacity to plan and monitor service delivery. It builds on lessons learned from previous operations and places a strong focus on improving girls' access to education in rural areas.
These new operations are part of the World Bank's broader strategy to help sustain essential services, protect human capital, and strengthen institutions amid ongoing fragility. By investing in education and digital financial systems, the Bank is working with partners to expand opportunities, promote inclusion, and help communities navigate the path toward recovery and stability.

SK approves decommissioning of first commercial nuclear reactor

Seoul - Saba: The South Korean Nuclear Safety and Security Commission has announced that the government has approved the decommissioning of the country's first commercial nuclear reactor, the Kori-1 reactor, which has been inactive since 2017. This marks the first decommissioning in Korea's history. According to Yonhap News Agency, the reactor is located at the Kori Nuclear Power Plant in Busan. It entered service in April 1978 and operated for approximately 40 years. The Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Corporation (KHNP) began the first phase of the decommissioning process last May, removing chemical and radioactive contamination. The company explained that the successful decommissioning will strengthen South Korea's position in the global nuclear reactor decommissioning market, noting that the process will take 12 years and includes the removal of spent fuel, decontamination of contaminated areas, and site restoration. The committee estimated that the decommissioning process would produce more than 171,000 tons of radioactive waste, and plans have been prepared to manage it. The project will cost approximately 1.07 trillion won (US$788.8 billion). South Korea currently has 26 nuclear reactors, 20 of which are in operation, while several of the remaining reactors are undergoing regulatory maintenance. The Kori-2 reactor is awaiting government approval to extend its operating period. Whatsapp Telegram Email Print more of (International)

"HASHD" calls for immediate halt to US-Israeli aid distribution mechanism

Gaza – Saba: The International Commission to Support the Rights of the Palestinian People (HASHD) has called for an immediate halt to the US-Israeli aid distribution mechanism and the ongoing killing of starving civilians. During a press conference held on Thursday at Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City, the commission urged international intervention to stop the genocide and ensure the flow of humanitarian aid. In its statement, HASHD addressed the genocide crimes committed against the people of Gaza, particularly the killing of starving civilians who had gathered near US-Israeli aid distribution centers. The statement emphasized that humanity stands at a critical crossroads, witnessing the continuous and grave crimes committed by Israeli occupation forces against Palestinian civilians in Gaza. These crimes have persisted without interruption since October 7, 2023—over 630 days—constituting one of the most horrific genocides in modern history. It highlighted the unprecedented catastrophic conditions in Gaza, where Israel's war machine has systematically destroyed civilian houses, shelters, displacement tents, infrastructure, hospitals, and schools. Israel's suffocating blockade has led to widespread famine, severe shortages of water, medicine, and other basic necessities. The statement stressed that the Israeli occupation is implementing a systematic policy of starvation, control over civilians, and the use of aid as a tool for blackmail, demographic manipulation, and warfare. These actions, it said, constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity, representing a blatant violation of international humanitarian law—particularly the Fourth Geneva Convention and the Genocide Convention—as well as the rulings of the International Court of Justice. Honest positions break strongest alliances, thwart enemies' attempts to oppress nation

Sana'a - Saba: From the cradle of Pan-Arabism and the source of faith, the sincere positions of the people of the Ansarullah (supporters) are manifested, forming a wall of repulsion and a major obstacle to all the intrigues of the enemies and their attempts to oppress the nation, and to destroy its identity and its remaining constants. Here is a dear people and an exceptional leader, whose words precede his deeds, who does not hesitate for a moment to champion the truth and take sides for the issues of the nation. This is the leader whom God dearly loves in Yemen, so he became an active force, forcing the enemy to reckon with a thousand considerations after he regained his freedom and his sovereign decision. He fought the mightiest wars with the hegemonic and arrogant forces that tried to stand as a stumbling block in his way, to return him to the square of guardianship, submission, and dependence, reaping only disappointment, loss, helplessness, and failure. Yes, this great leader stood up, and the authentic people of Yemen gathered around him, whom Allah singled out with wisdom and strength of determination. The result stunned both enemy and friend, as Yemen staged the most magnificent epics and triumphs and conquered the most powerful alliances that tried to break it. The deadliest weapons were used for this, and armies marched against him to enforce submission or surrender, but he emerged victorious with his head held high, bypassing all his pain and wounds, declaring that dignity is a red line and sovereignty is not negotiable. The beginning was when the axis of evil struggled, making Saudi Arabia and the UAE a front for it. Through their military alliance, which included more than 17 countries, they tried to dissuade the Yemeni people from their liberal path in 2015, announcing what they called "Decisive Storm." This was in fact nothing but a clear military aggression and crude interference in Yemen's internal affairs, and an open attempt to subdue it, so that those forces would continue to impose their dominance over it. The Yemeni people, its leadership, and its army had no choice but steadfastness, cohesion, and resilience in the face of that brutal and unjustified aggression, which poured its hatred on Yemen, deliberately destroying all the infrastructure and service facilities owned by the country. They sought to impoverish and starve the people, especially since its barbaric aggression coincided with a suffocating siege that included all airports, ports, and land crossings, and an economic war targeting Yemen's currency, its central bank, and everything related to the economy and livelihood of the Yemeni people. In the face of all the brutality and aggression practiced by the coalition of aggression, the Yemeni people proved at all military, security, economic, social, and other levels that they could counter all the plans of the US-Saudi-UAE alliance of aggression to occupy Yemen. It took only a few years until the equation changed, and the Yemeni people, thanks to Allah and His support, turned from a position of defense to a position of attack. The armed forces were able to defeat all the forces, equipment, and mercenaries mobilized by the coalition, inflicting a severe defeat upon them. At that time, the armed forces had succeeded in moving the theater of operations deep into the countries of aggression and began targeting and threatening their vital installations. This prompted the latter to declare a halt to military operations on Yemen and try to get out of its predicament, realizing that it had miscalculated when it decided to stand up to the Yemeni people. The result was that it suffered heavy losses and lost all its prestige when the world watched its military columns and mechanisms fleeing in front of the heroes of Yemen in deserts, mountains, and valleys. The US played a clear role in the aggression and siege on Yemen, providing military and logistical support, arms, and prohibited bombs to the aggression coalition, alongside its crucial part in the blockade and economic warfare. Despite this, the US administration failed to learn its lesson. It's now trying to prevent the Yemeni people from supporting Palestinians against Zionist aggression and the blockade on Gaza. This includes efforts to halt direct military aid to the Palestinian resistance and Yemen's ban on Israeli shipping in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and Gulf of Aden. This has led the US to directly confront Yemen, deploying aircraft carriers and launching strikes on residential areas, facilities, and civilian targets, yet without achieving any military objectives. The American failure became evident from the outset when the first aircraft carrier, the Eisenhower, was forced to retreat after enduring surprise attacks and multiple engagements by the Yemeni armed forces. These actions inflicted significant damage, compelling the carrier to withdraw to avoid further attacks and scandals. The United States subsequently deployed other aircraft carriers, including the Theodore Roosevelt, the Abraham Lincoln, and eventually the Harry Truman, its most advanced carrier. However, none of these vessels survived or achieved their objectives. Yemeni military operations in support of Gaza continued to escalate, while the United States incurred losses exceeding a billion dollars within thirty days of its operations' commencement. The Truman aircraft carrier was ultimately forced to withdraw after losing two F-18s during confrontations with the armed forces. Ultimately, facing persistent failures and heavy losses, the Americans had no choice but to withdraw and declare an end to their operations. This signified abandoning their stated objectives, primarily the protection of the Zionist entity and Israeli shipping. In the end, their efforts resulted only in seeking the neutralization of American ships and interests, leaving the Zionists to defend themselves without US protection. This highlights the importance, effectiveness, and strength of Yemen's position, demonstrating the impact of its military operations on the Zionist enemy and its success in stripping the entity of American protection. This marks the first instance where the Americans have abandoned the protection of the temporary entity, solely out of fear of their own warships, ships, and aircraft carriers being targeted, and to avert further scandals. The intense targeting of American warships and aircraft carriers by advanced Yemeni missiles and drones, exceeding their ability to respond, was a substantial threat. It severely damaged the reputation of American forces and dispelled global media propaganda about the superiority of the US Navy, which Washington had historically used to intimidate the world. Yemen successfully shattered that reputation by forcing these naval vessels, once a source of pride for American industry, to flee. The significance of Yemen's supportive stance for Palestine also lies in its emergence amidst decades of despair, helplessness, and weakness across the region. While many nations' subservience and fear of America and Israel led them to avoid confrontation, the Yemeni people, despite enduring a decade of aggression and blockade, stood as equals against them, undeterred by their advanced weaponry. This courageous stance was not merely for media consumption, as some agents attempt to portray. Yemen has fully committed to supporting the Palestinian people, launching ballistic missiles, hypersonic missiles, and drones, with these attacks escalating for over a year and a half. Thus, in the eyes of the Yemeni people, the American enemy has been reduced to a mere straw, as described by the martyred leader Sayyed Hussein Badr al-Din al-Houthi more than two decades ago. This illustrates the vast difference between those who consider confronting America reckless and suicidal, and those who see it as a lifeline and a path to progress. Whatsapp Telegram Email Print
