New facility at Nand Nagri to test 72,000 vehicles annually
New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday laid the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art, fully automated Automated Testing Station (ATS) at the DTC Nand Nagri Depot in northeast Delhi. The new facility will have the capacity to test 72,000 vehicles annually, significantly expanding Delhi's vehicle inspection infrastructure. Delhi currently has about 4.5 lakh commercial vehicles requiring annual fitness certification. However, the only existing ATS in Jhuljhuli in southwest Delhi can accommodate only around 47,919 vehicles per year. The remaining vehicles—including trucks, buses, pick-up vans, goods carriers, and taxis — undergo testing in facilities outside Delhi. The new ATS at Nand Nagri aims to bridge this gap. Officials estimate that the additional centre will generate minimum annual revenue of Rs 3 crore — revenue that presently goes to neighbouring states. Highlighting Delhi's transport statistics, CM said, "Delhi has over 1.53 crore registered vehicles, including about 6.5 lakh commercial vehicles that require annual fitness certification. Currently, only one automated testing station operates at Jhuljhuli, with a capacity to test 47,919 vehicles per year." The new ATS will be fully digital and free from human intervention, ensuring transparency and fairness. It will feature a four-lane system: two lanes for heavy motor vehicles (HMVs), one for light motor vehicles (LMVs), and one for two-wheelers. Advanced testing procedures such as emission testing, roller brakes, suspension inspection (front and rear), underbody inspection, and headlight alignment will be conducted at the centre. With an annual testing capacity of 72,000 vehicles, including 20,000 two-wheelers, the centre is expected to generate Rs 3 crore annually for the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). Chandigarh: In a city where the burgeoning number of private vehicles has exceeded the total population, air is bound to be heavy with toxic fumes. For Chandigarh, the tag of "city with the highest density of vehicle ownership in the country" has come at a high price – severe traffic congestion, vehicle exhaust pumping poisonous fumes into the air, and heavy traffic sending clouds of dust floating up. A recent research report reveals that roadside dust is the main contributor to the poor air quality. During the latest meeting of the Chandigarh steering committee under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), the UT chief secretary was informed about a survey conducted by the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC). The survey found that one of the major source of PM 10 is soil exposed to pollutants. It was also highlighted that source apportionment studies carried out by many states, and preliminary findings of such study carried out in Chandigarh by IIT Kanpur and Ropar, concluded that roadside dust is the main contributor to the poor air quality. Saurabh Kumar, chief conservator of forests (CCF) and director, environment, said, "A major factor is that roadside dust and soil get suspended in the air and lead to deterioration in air quality. The city has high traffic movement, which disturbs the loose roadside dust." Weather and seasonal factors exacerbate the situation. The CMP states, "The share of two-wheelers and cars in total traffic is more than 80%. Household travel surveys indicate high ownership of cars and two-wheelers — 86% of households own at least one car or two-wheeler." During peak hours, on the busiest junctions, like Transport Chowk, nearly 80% of vehicles are private ones, concluded a recent Rites report. Chandigarh Traffic Police Annual Report says that against a vehicle population of 13.7 lakh, the city's population was 12.7 lakh in 2023. BMTC rolls out 148 non-AC e-buses with safety, eco-friendly upgrades
The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) on Friday announced the induction of 148 non-AC electric buses from Tata Motors Ltd for public service, along with the launch of new routes under express services and package tours. The first phase of this induction was marked by the ceremonial flag-off of 10 non-AC electric buses by State Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy. By further expanding its fleet of electric buses, BMTC has taken a significant step towards promoting public transport and combating rising vehicular pollution in Bengaluru. As of now, BMTC operates a total of 1,436 electric buses across various routes in the city, it said. 'These additional 148 new non-AC electric buses, supplied by TML (Tata Motors Ltd) Smart City Mobility Solutions Ltd, are being operated under the Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model for a contractual period of 12 years at a rate of Rs 41.01 per kilometre per bus, inclusive of electricity charges,' BMTC said in a statement. 'Financial assistance of Rs 39.08 lakh per bus has been extended under the Directorate of Urban & Land Transport (DULT) and the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) scheme,' it added. According to BMTC, the operation of these electric buses is instrumental in preventing the emission of approximately 2.07 lakh kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere and contributes to saving nearly 77,000 litres of diesel daily, thereby bolstering the city's green transport initiatives.
