Over 750 Apple and Pear trees felled in Kotkhai as eviction drive gains momentum
Shimla, July 12 (UNI) In a major operation carried out under tight security, the Special Operation Procedure (SOP) team today cut down over 750 apple and pear trees in the Kotkhai region of Shimla district as part of the ongoing court-monitored drive to clear illegal encroachments from forest land.
The operation began with the felling of 93 apple trees illegally planted by Dinesh Tajta, followed by the removal of 664 apple and pear trees belonging to Pratap Chauhan, officials confirmed.
The Revenue Department has reported that Pratap Chauhan has allegedly encroached upon nearly 20 bighas of forest land in the area. The remaining trees on this encroached stretch are scheduled to be removed on Sunday.
The action is part of the enforcement of a July 2, 2025 Himachal Pradesh High Court order in which a division bench comprising Justices Vivek Singh Thakur and Bipin C. Negi directed the State Forest Department to remove all apple orchards from previously encroached forest land across the state.
The court had taken strong note of repeated attempts by evicted encroachers to reoccupy forest land and had ordered strict recovery of costs from violators, including stump removal and forest replantation, to be charged as arrears of land revenue.
Law and order in the Kotkhai area was maintained peacefully throughout the day, with the District Administration and police teams deployed to ensure smooth conduct of the operation. No resistance or disruption was reported during the felling process.
Earlier, the District Magistrate had imposed a ban on carrying firearms in Village Chaithla under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, amid apprehensions of unrest due to previous instances where locals attempted to obstruct eviction drives.
The ban remains in effect till July 18, and all licensed firearms in the area were ordered to be deposited with the local police.
With the Forest Department and enforcement agencies acting in close coordination, the High Court's directive appears to be gaining full force on the ground, especially in sensitive regions like Kotkhai that have witnessed persistent encroachment over the years.

Lavrov lauds ties with DPRK as show of ‘invincible brotherhood'
Moscow/Pyongyang, July 12 (UNI) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's recent arrival in North Korea marked a significant step in the burgeoning strategic dialogue between Moscow and Pyongyang, with Lavrov lauding the political relationship between Russia and the DPRK as an "invincible brotherhood." This bond, he emphasised, has been demonstrably strengthened by the participation of North Korean soldiers fighting alongside Russian forces in the "liberation" of the Kursk region, an unprecedented level of military cooperation that underscores the deepening ties, reports Russian state media TASS. During the visit, Lavrov signed a plan with his DPRK counterpart Choe Son Hui for exchanges between their diplomatic departments for 2026-2027 during a ceremony in Wonsan, as part of the second round of strategic talks at the foreign ministerial level. The Russian FM also acknowledged Pyongyang's crucial contributions to Russia's ongoing military operations, thanking the North Korean military servicemen for their help in the 'successful liberation of the Kursk Region from Ukrainian Nazis and foreign mercenaries.' He further indicated that the future trajectory of any military cooperation would be 'decided solely by Kim Jong-un,' with Russian President Vladmir Putin maintaining constant communication with him. Beyond military matters, the sides also discussed on issues such as bilateral cooperation, with concrete plans to resume maritime transportation links between the two nations. On the sensitive issues of nuclear posture and diplomacy, Russia issued a stern warning to the United States and its allies, cautioning against any actions that could imperil the security of either Moscow or Pyongyang. Lavrov reiterated Moscow's understanding and respect for North Korea's reasons behind developing its nuclear program, a stance that sets it apart from many other global powers. On the subject of the US, both Russia and North Korea thanked President Donald Trump for his interest in potentially resuming dialogue with Pyongyang, though no further comment was offered on this front. Regarding inter-Korean dialogue, Russia affirmed its willingness to assist only on issues where North Korea expressed its interest in maintaining a respectful distance from internal Korean affairs. In a reciprocal show of support, North Korea's Foreign Minister pledged "unconditional" backing for Russia's territorial integrity, firmly declaring that the relationship between their two nations has reached an "unbreakable" level.

Trump offers condolences to victims of Texas flash floods, says ‘nation grieves with you'
Kerrville, July 12 (UNI) President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump travelled to Central Texas yesterday to survey the catastrophic damage left by last week's deadly flash floods and offered condolences to the families of victims, stating 'the nation grieves with you'. With the death toll at 121 and more than 170 still missing, officials say the numbers are likely to rise, reports CBS News. The POTUS and First Lady visited Kerrville, the heart of the disaster zone, where they met with local leaders, emergency responders, and grieving families. The two spoke with the relatives of those who lost their lives in the flood behind closed doors. "We just visited with incredible families that — I mean, look, they've been devastated," Trump said during a roundtable discussion. "They lost their child, or two children. And, just hard to believe. I've never seen anything like it — a little narrow river that becomes a monster." Echoing the statement, Melania Trump said "We are grieving with you. Our nation is grieving with you." She also pledged to return to Texas to support affected families. Governor Greg Abbott, alongside Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, joined the presidential delegation in Kerrville. The group received a detailed briefing from rescue officials beside a fire truck and storm debris. President Trump praised the emergency response and pledged federal support for rebuilding efforts. One of the most harrowing tragedies occurred at Camp Mystic, a summer camp near Hunt in Kerr County, where at least 27 girls and staff members lost their lives after floodwaters surged through riverside cabins. Survivors who lived through the nightmare reported waking up to find water rushing in through their windows. Senator Cruz, who met with some of the families called the visit a haunting affair, and said "I saw a mom and dad come up to one of those crosses, drop to their knees and kiss that cross. And the mom was weeping. I've never seen anything more horrible in my life." Despite offering a promise to rebuild, Trump acknowledged the irreplaceable loss to the families, stating "So many lives have been lost. You can't say, 'Oh, it's going to be bigger, better, stronger.' But we're going to make it back. And we're going to make it good again." Trump and his delegation arrived in San Antonio aboard Air Force One before being flown by helicopter to Kerrville. Speaking before departure from Washington, he called the flooding 'a horrible thing,' adding, 'Nobody can even believe it — that much water, that fast.' Rescue efforts continue across the region with drones, boats and volunteers combing debris in hopes of bringing closure to families still searching for loved ones. However, Trump has so far refrained from blaming anyone for the incident, praising the FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) workers in conducting rescue operations, despite his criticism of the body. He added that Washington is "taking historic action to ensure that such a nightmare never happens again," although what that might look like is unclear. UNI ANV PRS
