Frustrated Giants lose another game and another third baseman to injury
PHOENIX — You couldn't blame Christian Koss for wanting to keep his injury a secret. The 27-year-old San Francisco Giants infielder is getting his first chance in the major leagues. He was primed for a window of consistent playing time after backup third baseman Casey Schmitt joined starting third baseman Matt Chapman on the injured list Monday. So when Koss felt his left hamstring tighten while trying to beat out an infield hit in the sixth inning, he didn't report directly to the trainer's room. He tried to play through it. Advertisement When he batted in the eighth inning with the Giants down a run, he drove a pitch to deep left field. He knew in a terrifying instant that he could barely run the bases. He was more relieved than anyone when the ball ended up in the stands and he could trot the rest of the way home. But it wasn't that simple. For the Giants' offense in June, nothing has been. Umpires huddled and called Koss out due to fan interference. Replay officials overturned the call, determining that a fan did not interfere with Arizona center fielder Alek Thomas. However, the replay room also determined that the fan reached over the fence while snagging the ball in his glove. It resulted in a King Solomon decree that was the correct call, even if it left no one satisfied: they awarded Koss a double and placed him at second base, where Brett Wisely pinch ran for him. What happened next was a predictable outcome if you have watched more than five minutes of Giants baseball this month. They did not push across the tying run. Rafael Devers struck out for the fourth time in the game. Then Heliot Ramos struck out looking on a pitch that appeared well outside and missed its spot by so much that Arizona catcher Jose Herrera had to lunge across the plate to glove it. Sure, it's better to be lucky than good. The Giants would be ecstatic to have a smidgen of either. Their 4-2 loss to the Diamondbacks at Chase Field marked their 12th in 17 games — a skid that seems more like a free fall because it's dropped them from a tie atop the National League West to an eight-game deficit behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers. The Gianta have reached the portion of the program where even the weird stuff is starting to go against them. 'Literally, (the catcher) is set up underneath (Ramos's) armpit, and the ball is off the plate outside. That's a tough one. But look, we're in this position because we're not doing much offensively. So it gets frustrating.' I'm battling in that situation. We need that run. In those close situations, I know I get better when the at-bat goes on. When you take the bat away from me like that, it's tough. 'We stick together as a team. It's frustrating, don't get me wrong, but we're pushing forward.' The Giants' pre-series hitters' meeting became a team-wide affair. Sometimes the most constructive way to tackle one of these skids is to acknowledge it and pledge to support each other through it. It's not helping that third base is becoming the Hurt Corner. San Francisco scratched Schmitt, who was hit on the left hand by a pitch last Wednesday, from two lineups over the weekend against the Chicago White Sox and couldn't take competitive swings Monday. The Giants placed him on the IL (backdated three days), and after an MRI showed nothing more than a bone bruise, Schmitt is likely to be ready on July 7 for a homestand opener against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Giants could have Chapman back during that Phillies series as well; he tested his sprained right hand by taking batting practice Monday and continues to make progress. With Koss likely headed to the IL, the Giants are still left with six more games to cover on this road trip. With Devers not expected to be asked to play third, the next man up is Wisely, and Tyler Fitzgerald, who replaced Schmitt on the roster, is back as the second baseman. How star-crossed are the Giants right now? They sent Fitzgerald to Triple-A Sacramento to build confidence with a mental reset, but he was only able to play four games for the River Cats because he took a pitch off his left hand, too. Fitzgerald delivered the Giants' biggest hit of the night. He drilled a high fastball and split the gap in right-center for a tying, two-run double in the seventh inning. Advertisement 'Just feels good to hit the ball hard again,' Fitzgerald said. 'I haven't done that for a while.' The Diamondbacks regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when they staged a soft-contact rally against Logan Webb, who otherwise firmed up his All-Star credentials while throwing his major league-leading 14th quality start out of 18 assignments this season. He entered Monday leading the majors in Fielding Independent Pitching (2.25) and posting the best strikeout rate of his career (10.1 per nine innings). Webb has never been better. Yet the Giants are 9-9 in his starts. 'It's pretty tough,' Webb said of the team-wide malaise. 'If we want to go to the places we want to go to, we've got to get through it. So just dig deep and show up tomorrow. There's nothing else we can do.'
