Daniel Wiffen withdraws from World Aquatics Championships in Singapore
"Unfortunately, Daniel Wiffen has had to withdraw, on medical grounds and due to the ongoing effects of appendicitis he dealt with in June, from the remainder of competition at the World Aquatics," Swim Ireland confirmed..
Wiffen led the field through the opening 350 metres of the 800m final on Wednesday, but faded in the latter half to come home in 7:58.56, nearly 14 seconds off his personal best. The 24-year-old later revealed he had been struggling with stomach issues during the race.
"Obviously not my best showing, from last year winning the Olympics to coming eighth in the final,' Wiffen said after the race.
"But honestly, I'm happy to be in the final, still progressing, still getting those nerves up. You know, that's what sport's about, trying to get myself uncomfortable, and I was definitely uncomfortable in that race.
"I'm pretty sure I was leading at one point and then I got to 400m and then my stomach was in pieces but, you know, I'm happy to be in the final, I'm happy to represent Ireland again in a final.''

Cameron Young holds five-shot lead at Wyndham Championship, Seamus Power rallies late on
Cameron Young shot 5-under-par 65 and threatened to run away from the pack during the Wyndham Championship's third round Saturday at Greensboro, North Carolina. Young, seeking his first victory on the PGA Tour, is at 20-under 190 for a five-stroke advantage on Colombia's Nico Echavarria. Young has been a runner-up seven times since joining the tour in 2022. Echavarria, who shot 64, had birdies on four of the final seven holes to rise into contention. Chris Kirk (67), Mac Meissner (70) and defending champion Aaron Rai (69) of England are tied for third at 12 under. Seamus Power recovered from a disappointing start to sign for a round of 69 that leaves him on -5 for the tournament. The Irishman, starting on the 10th hole, made the turn at +2 after a painful double bogey on the 18th. He slipped further back with a bogey on the par-4 second hole but rallied to claim four biridies in his final six holes. Young, who was at 15 under through the first two rounds with the 125 matching the tournament's 36-hole scoring record, was tearing through Sedgefield Country Club. Through six holes of the third round, Young's margin rose to eight strokes on a quintet that was trying to keep him in their sights. Young had birdies on Nos. 3-6. Until the 15th hole Saturday, Young's lone bogey in the tournament came on No. 1 (his 10th hole) of the first round Thursday. He later added two birdies. Young, 28, played collegiately at nearby Wake Forest. Rai lost momentum he had in the second round when he came back to complete that Saturday morning. Then in the third round, he was 2 over through 12 holes before three consecutive birdies put him back in the mix. Amateur Jackson Koivun, a college golfer for Auburn, shot 65 and is alone in sixth place at 11 under. South Korea's Sungae Im, after a pair of 64s and playing in the final group in the third round, dipped with a 73 and is at 9 under. It was a long day at the course. Some golfers had as many as eight holes to complete in the second round, which was suspended Friday afternoon because of storms. Tom Kim withdrew rather than completing the second round. The third round used threesomes, starting on the first and 10th tees. The Wyndham Championship marks the last tournament on the PGA Tour's regular season, so there will be crucial developments throughout Sunday's round as golfers aim to secure spots in the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings in order to qualify for the postseason.

But the Bees were knocked out of the League Cup by Newport in the preliminary round in mid-week, and were again sent crashing back down to earth by Fleetwood this afternoon. On 22 minutes, Barnet stopper Evans dawdled with the ball to the right of his penalty area. As he looked to get the ball out of his feet, the 28-year-old showed too much of it to Will Davies. Davies could hardly believe his luck as he rolled the ball into the empty net. Commentating for Sky Sports, Courtney Sweetman-Kirk called Evans' mistake a "calamity". Following his side's 2-0 defeat, Bees boss Brennan pulled no punches when discussing Evans' display. EFL club launch new badge like 'lion with lollipop and first aid box' The Irishman, 45, told the "He missed all of pre-season with a lot of messing in the summer with his contract, with joining us. "So when you miss pre-season and you are rusty you're going to do stupid things like that. "At the end of the day he's put that performance in, not me. Their goalkeeper made saves when he had to." Evans played 18 matches while on loan at Barnet from Cheltenham during the second half of last season. The former Brennan said at the time: "Owen needs no introduction to the football club. "He impressed last year in his loan, and it's been a long summer trying to get him to sign. "His family situation changed when he had a daughter on the last day of the season, so eventually we worked something out for him to commit long-term to the football club."

Ferrand-Prevot takes control at Tour de France Femmes
France's Pauline Ferrand-Prevot powered to victory on the mountainous stage eight of the Tour de France Femmes on Saturday, dropping her rivals before the Col de la Madeleine summit to claim the yellow jersey on the eve of the finale. The 33-year-old, who won the Paris-Roubaix Femmes in April, attacked seven kilometres from the summit to overtake Niamh Fisher-Black (Lidl–Trek) and Yara Kastelijn (Fenix–Deceuninck) before riding clear. The Visma–Lease a Bike rider crossed the line one minute 45 seconds ahead of Sarah Gigante (AG Insurance–Soudal), with Fisher-Black in third two minutes 15 seconds behind. Lara Gillespie (UAE Team ADQ) was best of the Irish trio, coming home in 64th. Gillespie is 94th in the general classification. Mia Griffin (Roland le Devoluy) was 113th and is now 100th overall, while Fiona Mangan (Winspace Orange Seal) - who became the first Irish rider to win an intermediate sprint at the event on Friday - was 125th today and lies in 114th on the GC. Mangan is 34th in the points classification. Reflecting on her stage win, Ferrand-Prevot said: "It was super painful, the last kilometre, because I wanted to have a gap as big as possible for tomorrow. I also wanted to enjoy it but it's not over until you cross the finish line. I'm so happy we made it." Ferrand-Prevot's Visma teammate Marion Bunel, who was with her in the early breakaway, dropped back to pace her on the Col de la Madeleine. "I can't wait to see my teammates and to share this jersey with them because they have been a big, big part of this victory and this yellow jersey," Ferrand-Prevot added. "For sure I will give everything for the jersey tomorrow. My teammates will be there to support me, so it makes me feel a bit more relaxed about it." Ferrand-Prevot, Paris Olympics gold medallist in cross-country mountain biking, will take her commanding lead into Sunday's final stage, aiming to become the first Frenchwoman to win the Tour de France Femmes. It was a third straight stage victory for France which capped an aggressive display from Ferrand-Prevot, who started the day 26 seconds off the general classification leader Kimberley Le Court Pienaar (AG Insurance-Soudal). Her win put her in the overall lead, with Gigante, two minutes 37 seconds adrift, the only general classification favourite still able to challenge her on the final 124.1km mountain ride from Praz-sur-Arly to Chatel. Mauritian Le Court crashed on the descent from the Col du Frene with 63km remaining, briefly trailing the peloton by about a minute before resuming her chase. She rejoined later, but her effort to set the pace for teammate Gigante, combined with the relentless climbing, cost her dearly in the general classification, dropping her to 11th place.
