Daniel Wiffen withdraws from World Aquatics Championships in Singapore
"Unfortunately, Daniel Wiffen has had to withdraw, on medical grounds and due to the ongoing effects of appendicitis he dealt with in June, from the remainder of competition at the World Aquatics," Swim Ireland confirmed..
Wiffen led the field through the opening 350 metres of the 800m final on Wednesday, but faded in the latter half to come home in 7:58.56, nearly 14 seconds off his personal best. The 24-year-old later revealed he had been struggling with stomach issues during the race.
"Obviously not my best showing, from last year winning the Olympics to coming eighth in the final,' Wiffen said after the race.
"But honestly, I'm happy to be in the final, still progressing, still getting those nerves up. You know, that's what sport's about, trying to get myself uncomfortable, and I was definitely uncomfortable in that race.
"I'm pretty sure I was leading at one point and then I got to 400m and then my stomach was in pieces but, you know, I'm happy to be in the final, I'm happy to represent Ireland again in a final.''

Cameron Young shot 5-under-par 65 and threatened to run away from the pack during the Wyndham Championship's third round Saturday at Greensboro, North Carolina. Young, seeking his first victory on the PGA Tour, is at 20-under 190 for a five-stroke advantage on Colombia's Nico Echavarria. Young has been a runner-up seven times since joining the tour in 2022. Some golfers had as many as eight holes to complete in the second round, which was suspended Friday afternoon because of storms. Tom Kim withdrew rather than completing the second round. The third round used threesomes, starting on the first and 10th tees. The Wyndham Championship marks the last tournament on the PGA Tour's regular season, so there will be crucial developments throughout Sunday's round as golfers aim to secure spots in the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings in order to qualify for the postseason.

Ferrand-Prevot takes control at Tour de France Femmes
France's Pauline Ferrand-Prevot powered to victory on the mountainous stage eight of the Tour de France Femmes on Saturday, dropping her rivals before the Col de la Madeleine summit to claim the yellow jersey on the eve of the finale. The 33-year-old, who won the Paris-Roubaix Femmes in April, attacked seven kilometres from the summit to overtake Niamh Fisher-Black (Lidl–Trek) and Yara Kastelijn (Fenix–Deceuninck) before riding clear. The Visma–Lease a Bike rider crossed the line one minute 45 seconds ahead of Sarah Gigante (AG Insurance–Soudal), with Fisher-Black in third two minutes 15 seconds behind. Lara Gillespie (UAE Team ADQ) was best of the Irish trio, coming home in 64th. Gillespie is 94th in the general classification. Mia Griffin (Roland le Devoluy) was 113th and is now 100th overall, while Fiona Mangan (Winspace Orange Seal) - who became the first Irish rider to win an intermediate sprint at the event on Friday - was 125th today and lies in 114th on the GC. Ferrand-Prevot's Visma teammate Marion Bunel, who was with her in the early breakaway, dropped back to pace her on the Col de la Madeleine. "For sure I will give everything for the jersey tomorrow. My teammates will be there to support me, so it makes me feel a bit more relaxed about it."
