MACC identifies two more companies linked to data centre bribery

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has identified two more companies that secured data centre projects through bribes given to a project manager of a construction company who was arrested recently.
According to a source, several company directors have also been identified during the course of the investigation.
"Several of these company directors will be called in to assist with the investigation.
"Investigations also found that the main suspect, the project manager, admitted to demanding three per cent of the project value from any company seeking to obtain projects from the prominent construction company," the source said today.
It was revealed that this was done by leaking project tender prices and assisting to ensure that companies which paid the bribes would secure the tenders.
"The bribes were paid in stages according to the progress payments of the projects.
"It is understood that there are still several million ringgit yet to be paid by the companies to the suspect, as agreed under their arrangement," the source added.
It was reported yesterday that a project manager of a construction company burnt nearly RM1 million in cash when the MACC raided his home in Petaling Jaya on Thursday.
Sources said that during the raid at his home in Petaling Jaya, the MACC team discovered nearly RM1 million in RM100 notes that had been burned.
The raiding team had also found RM7.5 million in cash hidden in several pillow boxes along with three luxury watches comprising Rolex, Omega and Cartier as well as jewellery including rings and gold coins.
The suspect, along with his wife and two company directors, were arrested on Friday in connection with the corruption case involving the procurement of a data centre construction project in Johor worth around RM180 million.
The project manager was remanded for seven days, his wife for three days, while the two company directors were remanded for five days.

MACC probes two more firms in data centre graft scandal

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has uncovered two additional companies suspected of securing data centre construction projects through bribery. The case involves a detained project manager from a prominent construction firm who allegedly demanded kickbacks in exchange for tender advantages. A source revealed that several company directors have been identified and will be called in for questioning. 'The main suspect admitted to requesting around three per cent of the project value from companies seeking contracts,' the source said. The bribes were facilitated by leaking tender details and ensuring priority for paying firms. Payments were made in stages, aligned with project milestones. 'Several million ringgit remain unpaid as per the agreement,' the source added. Earlier reports disclosed that the project manager attempted to destroy nearly RM1 million in cash during an MACC raid under Op Ways. Officers discovered burning RM100 notes at his Petaling Jaya residence, alongside RM7.5 million in cash hidden in pillow boxes, luxury watches, and jewellery. On Friday, MACC arrested a contract manager, his wife, and two others in the Klang Valley over a Johor-based data centre project worth RM180 million. - Bernama

UMNO man is furious Jho Low is still at large

UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi criticised Malaysian authorities for their delay in tracking and extraditing Jho Low, following reports that he is living luxuriously in Shanghai using a fake Australian passport with a Greek name. Puad said it is the responsibility of the police and of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Comission (MACC) to bring Jho Low back to face justice. He also criticised former IGP Abdul Hamid Bador for failing to fulfil his promise to bring Jho Low back by end-2019 and mocked his remarks about Jho Low's changed appearance. 'If it is true that he is in Shanghai, then it is the heavy responsibility of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the MACC to bring Jho Low back to face justice,' he said in a statement on Saturday. Abdul Hamid Bador Puad said, 'He even promised that Jho Low would be brought back before the end of December 2019. However, it was all just empty talk ('sembang kari') that ultimately embarrassed the country.' Additionally, Puad suggested that Najib's trial is unfair without key witnesses like Jho Low present. 'If that is the case, the charges should be dropped,' he added. Meanwhile, Rawang assemblyman Chua Wei Kiat has urged Putrajaya to offer a RM10 million reward for credible information leading to the capture of fugitive financier Jho Low. He argued that Jho Low's return is crucial for justice in the 1MDB case, similar to former prime minister Najib Razak being tried. Chua said the reward is a small amount compared to the RM29 billion already recovered from 1MDB assets and would show Malaysia's commitment to fighting corruption. After nearly four years, Jho Low, the mastermind of the 1MDB scandal, has reportedly been located in Shanghai's exclusive Green Hills area, living under a fake Australian passport and driving luxury cars, according to journalists Bradley Hope and Tom Wright. —July 20, 2025 Main image: Malay Mail
