10 Interesting Facts About India's One-Horned Rhino Found in Assam
By the early 20th century, only 200 Indian rhinos remained in the wild, but then dedicated conservation initiatives were taken to conserve this species.
Let's look at some interesting facts about the One-Horned Rhinoceros that will leave you awe-struck:
Rhino capital of the world
Kaziranga National Park in Assam is considered the capital of the world where this species is abundantly found. Over two-thirds of the global population of Indian rhinos is present here, which is more than the population of this species in the rest of India and Nepal combined.
Skin is like armour
This species has brownish-grey coloured skin and are hairless, with the skin looking as if plated like an armour. This skin gives them a unique appearance in comparison to other animals and also offers them protection. They also have a single horn on top of their snout and their upper lip is semi-prehensile. Their horn resembles the hooves of horses and is approximately 8.25 inches in length and weighs almost 3 kg. The horn also has the ability to regrow if it gets broken, as it is made up of keratin.
Love to stay in mud and water
These rhinos prefer semi-aquatic habitats and are commonly found in swamps, forests, and riversides. These locations are rich in nutritious minerals and as they have a prehensile upper lip, they have a preference towards cooler temperatures. They are also considered excellent swimmers and can even dive underwater for food.
Grass-loving species
Indian rhinos are mostly herbivores. They mostly feed on a diet composed of grasses along with leaves, shrub branches, fruits, and aquatic plants.
They have a preference for diverse plant species like submerged or floating aquatic plants as well as crops. They also use their swimming skills to find food in the water.
Breeding of one-horned rhinos
The female rhinos reach breeding maturity at 4 years of age, while the male species reaches sexual maturity at 9 years old. Rhinos can breed throughout the year, but birthing is spaced approximately 3–4 years apart. New-born calves weigh almost 58–70 kg and are dependent on their mother for a year and a half or more.
These calves gain 1–2 kg a day daily while consuming milk from their mother.
Heightened senses
The Indian one-horned rhinos have poor eyesight but have a heightened sense of smell and hearing, which compensates for their eyesight. Even though they are quite heavy in weight, they can sprint at 40–55 km/hr.
Nature of one-horned rhinos
This species mostly prefers being solitary and only stays in groups when the females raise calves or when they need to graze together for food.
Males do not have any particular territories and use scent marking with dung and urine. This species of rhinos mostly meets and greets each other by bobbing heads or nuzzling each other when they meet.
Use sounds to communicate
Rhinos are considered to growl and make funny noises to communicate. It is also said that they communicate through their poo and urine. Male rhinos grunt and growl when they want to show dominance, and squealing and trumpeting is used when they are excited.
They do not use sounds much and mostly rely on scents to communicate with each other.
Sleeping pattern
This species of rhinos can sleep while standing and lying down both. Most rhinos sleep in intervals for a total of 8 hours a day. They also sleep with their bodies submerged under the water with just their nostrils protruding out in shallow water.
Conservation
The one-horned rhino was given the status of endangered in 1986 by the IUCN and then was put under the vulnerable list in 2008. All species of rhinos are threatened by poaching and habitat loss. Some of their body parts are considered to have medicinal properties, which is why it has led to their overhunting. Conservation efforts revived their population from mere 200 individuals to over 3,500 by the mid-2010s.

Which is India's safest airline? DGCA report reveals shocking truth, you'll be surprised to know who tops the list!
After the recent plane crash in Ahmedabad, the biggest fear in the minds of people who travel by air is about the safety. This tragic incident has made passengers even more worried, especially since serious technical problems have also been reported in other flights from different airlines. To make things worse, a report by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has raised even more concerns. Now, air travellers across India are asking the same question: Which airline is truly the safest to fly with in India? According to the DGCA report, not a single airline in India passed the audit without any issues. The DGCA looked into eight Indian airlines and found a total of 263 problems during inspections. These issues were divided into two types i.e. Level 1 (minor issues) and Level 2 (more serious ones). Among all the airlines, Alliance Air was found to have the most problems, with 57 issues reported during the DGCA checks. Level 1 issues found during inspection The good news is that Alliance Air did not have any Level 1 issues that could pose a serious threat to passenger safety. However, some Level 1 safety concerns were found in other airlines. These include: Air India – 7 issues Air India Express – 2 issues Tata Singapore Airlines – 10 issues Level 1 problems are considered more serious and can affect the safety of passengers if not fixed quickly. The DGCA has asked these airlines to fix all such problems immediately and submit a full report as soon as possible, according to a reports in Which airline is the safest in India? If we go by the DGCA's audit, the safest airline in India right now is SpiceJet. It had the least number of issues i.e. only 14, and importantly, none of them were serious enough to be called Level 1 problems. Next in line are Tata Singapore Airlines and IndiGo. Tata Singapore had 17 issues, and IndiGo had 23. Just like SpiceJet, IndiGo also had no Level 1 safety issues, which makes it one of the safer choices as well. So, based on the DGCA's report, passengers can get a fair idea of which airlines are currently maintaining better safety standards in India. How many issues were found in each airline? The issues are divided into: Level 1 – More serious, safety-related concerns Level 2 – Less serious, but still need attention Airline Name Level 1 Issues Level 2 Issues Total Issues Alliance Air 0 57 57 Air India 7 44 51 Star Air 0 41 41 Quikjet 0 35 35 Air India Express 2 23 25 IndiGo 0 23 23 Tata SIA Airlines 10 7 17 SpiceJet 0 14 14 SpiceJet had the fewest total issues (14), with no serious Level 1 problems, making it the safest based on the audit. IndiGo also had no Level 1 problems and ranks second in overall safety. Airlines like Alliance Air and Air India had the highest number of total and serious issues, raising more safety concerns.

Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin sends 80‑year‑old Indian businessman and others into space
founder Jeff Bezos-owned rocket company Blue Origin has successfully sent an 80-year-old Indian businessman, Arvinder 'Arvi' Singh Bahal, into space as part of its latest mission. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The seasoned world traveller was among a crew of six passengers who embarked on a recent 10-minute journey into outer space. The mission, designated NS-34, was the 34th flight for the New Shepard program. The rocket launched from a private site in West Texas. Joining Bahal on the space tourism flight was cryptocurrency billionaire Justin Sun, who had reportedly paid $28 million for his seat back in 2021. Bahal and Sun were also joined by Turkish entrepreneur and photographer Gökhan Erdem; Puerto Rican journalist and meteorologist Deborah Martorell; British national Lionel Pitchford, who has operated an orphanage in Nepal for over 30 years; and American businessman James (JD) Russell. What Blue Origin said about its latest flight In a post-flight statement shared on the company's blog post, Phil Joyce, senior VP of Blue Origin's New Shepard, said: 'It was an honour to see so many nations represented on our flight today. The view of our fragile planet from space has a unifying effect on all who witness it, and I am always eager to see how our astronauts use this experience for the benefit of Earth.' NS-34 marked the 14th crewed mission of Blue Origin's New Shepard, a suborbital spaceflight system featuring a reusable rocket and capsule. After launch, the rocket returns to Earth for a vertical landing, similar to how Elon Musk-owned SpaceX's Falcon 9 touches down. Meanwhile, the capsule descends gently using parachutes. Each flight lasts around 10 to 12 minutes, during which passengers cross the Kármán line, which is 100 kilometres above sea level and the widely accepted boundary of space. This brief journey allows for a few minutes of weightlessness. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Ticket pricing for these flights remains undisclosed, so it's unclear how much passengers typically pay. However, it is believed to be significantly less than what crypto billionaire Sun paid in 2021. According to Blue Origin, that payment was made as a philanthropic donation. New Shepard continues to offer short yet impactful space experiences for civilian astronauts eager to witness Earth from the edge of space.
