Coach parent Tapestry invests in Gen Phoenix to scale sustainable leather

Fashion Network2 days ago
Tapestry Inc., the New York–based parent company of Coach and Kate Spade, will invest $15 million in Gen Phoenix, a UK-based recycled leather innovator, to expand its sustainable materials strategy across its fashion portfolio, the companies told Reuters. The deal raises Tapestry's stake in Gen Phoenix to 9.9%, signaling a deeper commitment to circular fashion.
The investment aligns with the company's broader sustainability ambitions and its focus on attracting Generation Z — those born between 1997 and 2012 — who increasingly prioritize eco-conscious fashion.
The partnership began in 2022 with the launch of Coach's Gen Z-focused Coachtopia line, which features products designed with at least 50% recycled leather fibers made from waste supplied by Gen Phoenix, according to the company's website.
Scott Roe, Tapestry's chief financial and chief operating officer, said Coachtopia serves as an indicator of younger consumers' shopping behavior.
'It's not that Coachtopia is so commercially massive, but it is helping us understand what's important to this really critical demographic,' he said. Roe declined to disclose Coachtopia's share of total earnings, noting only that it remains 'relatively small.'
Gen Phoenix estimates its materials have an 80% lower carbon footprint compared to virgin leather.
The companies previously collaborated on an uncoated lining material that Coachtopia brought to market in under a year, said Elyse Winer, chief marketing officer at Gen Phoenix.
As part of the investment, Gen Phoenix — which sources waste materials from European tanneries and factories — will supply recycled leather to Tapestry for three years.
Gen Phoenix CEO John Kennedy said the company looks forward to working across all Tapestry brands.
Roe added that the potential applications of recycled materials across the business remain broad: 'There's a lot of opportunities to redirect a lot of that waste stream,' he said.

Von Dutch enters F&B market with new liquor, soda, and water ranges; cafés to come

American fashion brand Von Dutch is entering the food and beverage market with its debut liquor collection, healthy sodas and mocktails, as well as a new water range, ahead of the opening of Von Dutch-branded cafés. The Los Angeles-based brand, acquired by White Space Group (WSG) in 2024, has signed a global licensing agreement to form Von Dutch F&B, as the early 2000s apparel outfit looks to become a complete lifestyle brand. The new food, beverage and hospitality venture, led by a newly appointed CEO Joe Wallace, kicks off with the launch of organic, plant-based mocktails and healthy sodas created in collaboration with Flavor House. The brand will also launch liquor products including vodka, tequila, beer, and spiked seltzers, followed with the debut of Von Dutch Water. Finally, the brand has plans to rollout Von Dutch Cafés, or café-lounge hybrids, set to open in New York and Los Angeles in the next 12 months. Visitors can expect a space that shifts from daytime coffee and snacks into an after-hours haven made up of mocktails, cocktails, and live entertainment. 'We're building more than a food brand - we're creating a whole empire. Von Dutch will be about entertainment, hospitality, wellness, authenticity, and bringing in new energy," said Wallace, an executive that has raised millions in startup capital and led several first-to-market innovations across food tech, hospitality, and consumer goods. 'This partnership marks a powerful step forward for Von Dutch as a cultural force. Joe brings not only the entrepreneurial fire, but the values and velocity to translate this brand into entirely new verticals," said Jack Cheika, CEO of WSG, which purchased the Californian brand from the French Royer Group, in June last year.

Puig's quarterly sales rise a steady 8%

Spanish company Puig, known for its perfume brands Rabanne, Carolina Herrera and , said on Wednesday its second-quarter sales at constant currency rose 8% from a year ago, in line with the slowdown in growth the company expects for the year. See catwalk Puig reported 1.09 billion euros ($1.27 billion) in sales during the second quarter, in keeping with the 1.1 billion euros forecast by analysts in an LSEG poll, and achieving the same magnitude of revenue increase year-on-year as in the previous quarter. The Barcelona-based group confirmed that it expects revenue growth to decelerate to between 6% and 8% in 2025 after an 11% increase in 2024, as it navigates the challenge of expected higher tariffs in the United States, one of its biggest markets. Chairman and CEO Marc Puig said during a call with analysts that whatever tariffs will be, the impact this year "will be relatively minor because most of the stock is already in the United States". Sales in the Americas rose 10% in the quarter, despite trade tensions stemming from an initial 10% increase in U.S. tariffs and Washington's promise of more levies, while sales in Asia improved by 19.5%. Still, the EMEA region remains its main market. Puig has priced the additional 10% U.S. tariff into its annual sales projection. U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday threatened to impose a 30% tariff on imports from the European Union starting on August 1, escalating trade tensions that may affect major beauty industry players such as L'Oreal, opens new tab and Estee Lauder, opens new tab, alongside other sectors such as European wine or clothing.
