Quantum Computers Simulate Particle 'String Breaking' in a Physics Breakthrough
The results, described in two Nature papers on June 4, are the latest in a series of breakthroughs towards using quantum computers for simulations that are beyond the ability of any ordinary computers.
'String breaking is a very important process that is not yet fully understood from first principles,' says Christian Bauer, a physicist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in Berkeley, California. Physicists can calculate the final results of particle collisions that form or break strings using classical computers, but cannot fully simulate what happens in between. The success of the quantum simulations is 'incredibly encouraging,' Bauer says.

Each experiment was conducted by an international collaboration involving academic and industry researchers — one team at QuEra Computing, a start-up company in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and another at the Google Quantum AI Lab in Santa Barbara, California.
The researchers using QuEra's Aquila machine encoded information in atoms that were arranged in a 2D honeycomb pattern, each suspended in place by an optical 'tweezer'. The quantum state of each atom — a qubit that could be excited or relaxed — represented the electric field at a point in space, explains co-author Daniel González-Cuadra, a theoretical physicist now at the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Madrid. In the other experiment, researchers encoded the 2D quantum field in the states of superconducting loops on Google's Sycamore chip.
The teams used diametrically opposite quantum-simulation philosophies. The atoms in Aquila were arranged so that the electrostatic forces between them mimicked the behaviour of the electric field, and continuously evolved towards their own states of lower energy — an approach called analogue quantum simulation. The Google machine was instead used as a 'digital' quantum simulator: the superconducting loops were made to follow the evolution of the quantum field 'by hand', through a discrete sequence of manipulations.
In both cases, the teams set up strings in the field that effectively acted like rubber bands connecting two particles. Depending on how the researchers tuned the parameters, the strings could be stiff or wobbly, or could break up. 'In some cases, the whole string just dissolves: the particles become deconfined,' says Frank Pollmann, a physicist at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Garching, Germany, who helped to lead the Google experiment.
Although simulating strings in a 2D electric field could have applications for studying the physics of materials, it is still a long way from fully simulating high-energy interactions, such as those that occur in particle colliders, which are in 3D and involve the much more complex strong nuclear force. 'We do not have a clear path at this point how to get there,' says Monika Aidelsburger, a physicist at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Munich, Germany.
Still, the latest results are exciting, and progress in quantum simulation in general has been 'really amazing and very fast,' Aidelsburger says.
Last year, Bauer and his LBNL colleague Anthony Ciavarella were among the first teams to simulate the strong nuclear force on a quantum computer. Approaches that replace qubits with qudits — which can have more than two quantum states and can be more realistic representations of a quantum field — could also make simulations more powerful, researchers say.

Air pollution and traditional herbal medicines could be major risk factors contributing to the development of lung cancer in people with no history of smoking, a groundbreaking new study has found. While smoking is a major risk factor for lung cancer, rates of the malignancy appear to be increasing among those who have never smoked, even with tobacco use declining globally. Previous studies have shown that lung cancer disproportionately affects non-smoking women, particularly those with Asian ancestry, and is more prevalent in East Asia than in Western nations. Now, a new study, published on Wednesday in the journal Nature, provides compelling evidence that air pollution and herbal medicines could be behind genetic mutations linked to the development of lung cancer in non-smokers. 'We are seeing this problematic trend that never-smokers are increasingly getting lung cancer, but we haven't understood why,' said Ludmil Alexandrov, an author of the study from the University of California San Diego. 'Our research shows that air pollution is strongly associated with the same types of DNA mutations we typically associate with smoking.' Most lung cancer prevalence studies haven't separated data of smokers from that of non-smokers, providing limited insights into potential causes in those patients. The latest study collected data from never-smokers worldwide and used genomics to find environmental factors likely behind these cancers. 'This is an urgent and growing global problem that we are working to understand regarding never-smokers,' said Maria Teresa Landi, co-author of the study from the US National Cancer Institute. While previous studies have shown a potential link between air pollution and lung cancer in never-smokers, the new research goes further by revealing a genomic link. In this comprehensive study, scientists analysed lung tumours from 871 never-smokers living in 28 regions with different levels of air pollution across Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. Researchers used genome sequencing methods to identify distinct patterns of genetic mutations which act like molecular fingerprints of past exposures. They then compared the genomic data with pollution estimates based on satellite and ground-level measurements of fine particulate matter. This helped them estimate long-term exposure of the patients to air pollution. The study found that never-smokers living in more polluted environments had significantly more mutations in their lung tumours, particularly the kinds which directly promote cancer development. Scientists also found more molecular signatures in this group, which are linked to cancer and serve as a record of all past exposures to mutation-causing environmental factors. For instance, these individuals had a nearly 4-fold increase in a mutational signature molecule linked to tobacco smoking and a 76 per cent increase in another signature linked to ageing. 'What we see is that air pollution is associated with an increase in somatic mutations, including those that fall under known mutational signatures attributed to tobacco smoking and ageing,' said Marcos Díaz-Gay, co-author of the study. Scientists found that the more pollution someone was exposed to, the more mutations were found in their lung tumours, as well as greater signs of their cells undergoing accelerated ageing. Another environmental risk unravelled by the study was aristolochic acid, a known cancer-causing chemical found in some traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic herbal medicines. This chemical, extracted from plants of the birthwort family, was found linked to a signature mutation in lung tumours of never-smokers from Taiwan. Although ingestion of this plant chemical has been linked previously to bladder, gut, kidney, and liver cancers, the latest study is the first to report evidence that it may contribute to lung cancer. 'This raises new concerns about how traditional remedies might unintentionally raise cancer risk,' Dr Landi said. 'It also presents a public health opportunity for cancer prevention, particularly in Asia.' The study also found an intriguing new mutation signature which appears in the lung tumours of most never-smokers but is absent in smokers. 'We don't yet know what's driving it,' Dr Alexandrov said. 'This is something entirely different, and it opens up a whole new area of investigation.'

Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) unit Google has rolled out a fresh Option B proposal to tweak its search?results layout, aiming to appease rivals and the European Commission under the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), just days before a pivotal Brussels workshop. In March, Brussels accused Google of favoring its own vertical offeringsShopping, Hotels and Flightsin general search results, breaching DMA rules on impartial treatment of third?party services. Last week, Google floated a plan to add a Vertical Search Service (VSS) box at the top of search pages, linking to specialist engines for travel and hospitality. Under the newly disclosed Option B, Google would complement the VSS box with a second supplier box directly beneath it, featuring free, algorithmically organized links to hotels, restaurants, airlines and transport providers. According to documents sent by the Commission, this dual?box arrangement is intended to give competitors visibility while sidestepping characterizations of the feature as a Google?owned service. Google Will Pay More For Your Old Phone For your Pixel 6a, the company will pay £384 ($523.78). Unless you scam someone on eBay and send them your broken Pixel 6a in place of an iPhone 14 (don't do this), you will not get anything close to that for a Pixel 6a. If you're not put off by Google's battery shenanigans then this is a solid deal that I haven't seen before from the company, or any other not just the Pixel 6a. Other out-of-fashion phones are valued highly in Google's sale. The sale ends on July 8th, coincidentally (or not?) the same day that Google rolls out the battery throttling update. Don't feel pressured, though, because considering the depth and consistency of promotional sales from Google, Samsung and Amazon, there will be more on the way.
