
We can never be free of suffering. But we can choose how we suffer
As a retired psychiatrist and a husband watching his beloved wife of 52 years suffer the indignities of advanced Parkinson's Disease, I know this question well. It is not a theoretical query, but one shaped by breath, loss, and long nights.
Albert Camus wrote that the only serious philosophical question is whether life is worth living. He gave us the haunting image of Sisyphus, condemned to push a boulder up a hill only for it to roll back down. Yet, Camus invites us to imagine Sisyphus happy. Not because his task has changed, but because his mind has. He has accepted the absurd and still chosen to live.
We are not always given reasons for what happens. Often, we are left with the bare reality, and our response becomes the only form of dignity we possess. In that sense, 'Why me?' is not just a cry of anguish but a plea for meaning. It is an invitation to examine what lies at the core of our existence.
Psychologically, the question arises when we are brought face to face with our limits. When illness strikes, or a career ends abruptly, or grief overwhelms us, our internal compass spins. The story we told ourselves about our life no longer holds. Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl, who survived Auschwitz, believed that human beings could endure unimaginable suffering as long as they had a 'why', a purpose. 'When we are no longer able to change a situation,' he wrote, 'we are challenged to change ourselves'.
This has been true in my life. My wife's decline has changed everything. There are no holidays now, no spontaneous walks, no ordinary ease. Yet, every morning, as we begin the rituals of care, feeding, physiotherapy, soft music, gentle words, I realise that love remains. And in love, there is still meaning.
Caregiving brings its own burden, a quieter suffering. It is a slow, private erosion of one's energy and identity. But it also deepens character. What begins as duty slowly becomes devotion. The question 'Why me?' may persist, but the answer becomes less important than the daily act of showing up.
For people of faith, 'Why me?' becomes a prayer. The psalmist cried, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?' These same words were echoed by Christ on the cross. Doubt is not the opposite of faith; it is part of it.
In Hinduism and Buddhism, suffering is accepted as part of the human condition, dukkha, something to be transcended through awareness, detachment, compassion. In Islam, the concept of sabr, or patient endurance, teaches that the divine is closest to the broken-hearted.
Sometimes, faith does not remove the suffering — it simply holds it. It gives us a wider frame in which to place our pain. One need not understand suffering to bear it with grace. Biologically speaking, suffering protects us — pain alerts us to danger. Anguish compels us to seek others. The cry of 'why me?' has evolutionary value; it invites others to come close, to witness, to help.
But beyond biology, there is empathy. When we suffer, we become more capable of understanding others who suffer. If we let it, pain can open the heart. That may be one of the few hidden blessings of suffering: It deepens us.
Over time, 'Why me?' may shift to 'What now?' or 'How shall I live through this?' That shift is subtle but powerful. It marks a move from protest to purpose. From paralysis to action.
Not all questions need answers. Some simply need listening. As theologian Paul Tillich said, 'The first duty of love is to listen.' So, we listen to ourselves, to those we love, and to the silence where no words come.
In my home, amid medicines, wheelchairs, nurses, there is still laughter. There is music. There is prayer. No one escapes suffering. But we can choose how we suffer. In that choice lies our freedom.

The Deeper Spiritual Angle There is a spiritual reason, too. According to Hindu belief, elders carry a kind of positive energy. When we bow down and touch their feet with sincerity, we activate a flow of this energy, from their body to ours. This energy can protect us from negative thoughts and help us lead a better life. It is said that good wishes that come from love and purity have the power to heal and protect. That is why blessings from elders are seen as a powerful shield in life. Symbolic Meaning Another popular belief is that elders have walked the earth longer than us. The dust on their feet is seen as a symbol of the journey they have taken; their struggles, lessons and wisdom. By touching their feet, we hope to absorb that wisdom and make better choices in our lives. There are three common ways to do Charan Sparsh: Simple Bow: Bending forward and touching the feet. This is the most common form used for parents and elders. Kneeling Touch: Sitting on your knees, then, bowing down. This is often done when greeting spiritual teachers or gurus. Full Prostration (Sashtanga Pranam): Lying flat on the ground with arms stretched forward. While the stay was wholesome, it was what we learned about coffee that lingered. Surrounded by lush greenery and the earthy scent of dew and roasted beans, every moment at Timbertales was like walking in nature's lap. During the stay, Somana, the resort's resident coffee connoisseur, casually asked: "Did you know most coffee in India contains chicory?" What Is Chicory And Why Is It In Your Coffee Chicory is a root from the same family as dandelions. It is generally roasted, ground, and added to coffee to enhance its flavour. Chicory has a woody flavour and nutty aroma, which is widely enjoyed in France and India. "The more chicory in your coffee, the cheaper it is," Somana shared with a smile. Is Chicory Root In Your Coffee Acidic While chicory enhances the flavour and aroma of coffee, it may affect your gut. Somana noted that excessive chicory could trigger acidity. Science supports this claim. While chicory is slightly less acidic than coffee itself, overconsumption can lead to gastrointestinal discomfort, including bloating and flatulence. A study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that chicory inulin products, though high in fibre, may increase digestive symptoms mildly. Interestingly, some people who blame coffee for their acidity might actually be reacting to the chicory mixed in it. Some studies have also found that chicory root is good for digestion, when taken in moderation. "Chicory is generally added to reduce the bitterness of coffee," Pavithra N Raj, Chief Dietician at Manipal Hospital, Yeshwantpur, Bangaluru, Karnataka, told NDTV. "However, filter coffee without chicory tends to be less acidic. Adding chicory may make the coffee more acidic, and might lead to more digestive issues. The percentage of chicory in your coffee powder should not exceed 20-30%," adds the expert. Is Drinking 100% Pure Coffee Good For You This leads to an obvious question: If additives like chicory can complicate digestion, is pure coffee a better choice? For the uninitiated, 100% pure coffee is just natural coffee and water - no blends, no filter. Turns out, pure coffee, particularly black coffee, offers several health benefits when consumed in moderation. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, coffee contains antioxidants that offer these nine health benefits Boosts energy Enhances focus Keeps your blood sugar levels in check Good for your heart health May even help you live longer Reduces the risk of Alzheimer's disease Lower chances of getting colon cancer Promotes liver health Decreases Parkinson's Disease risk Dietitian Pavithra N Raj says, "Pure coffee is also believed to help you lose weight. Many people prefer to drink it before they hit the gym. So, it is okay to drink pure coffee as long as you are drinking it in moderation." "There is no harm in drinking chicory coffee or plain black coffee. These instant coffee powders usually contain less chicory content and more coffee, which again is not harmful to a person. So, you can drink both types but in moderation," concludes the expert. While chicory root can lead to acidity, it is not all bad. You can have it but in moderation, as the expert recommends. Also, make sure to check with a healthcare provider before adding anything to your diet.

If you read '100% vegetarian' printed on the packet with a green mark, then the toothpaste is certainly vegetarian. But if that part is marked in red, it means the product contains animal derivatives and is categorized as non-veg.
