Govt School of Art in Dharwad celebrates golden jubilee
The school, situated adjacent to the RN Shetty Stadium complex on Karnatak College Road, houses an art gallery that has been showcasing artworks by artists from Dharwad and other places.
Before the establishment of the Govt School of Art, there were two art galleries in the twin cities--The Halabhavi School of Art in Dharwad and MV Minajagi Art Gallery in Indira Glass House in Hubballi. These art galleries were not so well equipped, and there was a demand for a well-equipped gallery from artists and art lovers in Dharwad.
Thanks to efforts by artists MR Balikai, Arya Acharya, Madhu Desai, Gayatri Goudar Desai, Renuka Markande, Lohit Naikar and many others, the Govt School of Art and art gallery came up in 1975 in a building at the University Public High School premises where a typing institute was running. Later, a new art gallery was constructed. Over the last five decades, the gallery has showcased the artworks of hundreds of artists.

Beautiful artworks
As the gallery is celebrating its 50th year, the entire campus is glowing with numerous artistic creations. The surroundings are adorned with artworks that captivate art enthusiasts.
The art lovers entering the gallery will see Indian traditional arts and folk paintings done by the students on the walls of the inner compound and building. Miniature paintings, murals, folk arts of different styles--Kangra, Basohli, Mewar, Vijayanagar, Amminabhavi, Navalagund, Ragamala, Rajasthani, pat paintings, Kinnal, Mysuru, Ajanta, Kota, Warli, Madhubani, Pahari and Bundi—keep the art lovers spellbound.
Vitthal Basalagundi, the owner of Art Point, has provided financial support to create these seed paintings, and the Rotary Club and members of the College Development Committee have also joined hands in developing the gallery. The gallery needs to be improved further, and alumni are being contacted for development.
"This is the only govt-run art school in North Karnataka, and we have decided to bring out a commemorative issue on the occasion of its 50th year. We have planned many programmes, including the construction of a sculpture park. The college has recently received grants through the department of collegiate education. Earlier, there was no opportunity to use the admission fee. Now we have got the opportunity for that too," Vithal said.
