Reece James thought marathon match would never finish after two-hour delay

Daily Mirror11 hours ago

Chelsea eventually booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup after finding a route past Portuguese giants Benfica following a huge delay in the USA
Reece James admitted he feared Chelsea 's marathon Club World Cup tie would never finish. Chelsea's last 16 clash with Benfica turned into a complete farce when it was delayed for nearly TWO HOURS because of lightning storms and a severe weather warning and eventually took four hours and 38 minutes to complete after kick-off.
James said: 'It was in the back of my mind that there was a chance that the game was not going to get completed. It was quite disruptive. We're happy, you know, we are into the next round and the game is completed.

'We got to 85 minutes and then had to sit on wait for, I don't know, a period. It was difficult, the climate was very hot and humid.'

It is the sixth game in the Club World Cup which has been delayed by the weather and the third time a game has been delayed by over an hour.
Strict US rules mean if there is lightning within a five mile radius then the game is delayed by 30 minutes for safety reasons - and the time delay is then reset every time a bolt is spotted.
It is highly likely FIFA will review those protocols before the international World Cup next summer as the climate in the United States has been challenging.
Chelsea actually produced their best performance of the tournament against Benfica and James opened the scoring with a 64th minute free kick and they were heading for victory.
Incredibly, Chelsea were just six minutes from victory when their players were ordered off the pitch as they had to take cover in the dressing room while the fans were also evacuated from the stands for one hour and 53 minutes until the game restarted.
But then when the match eventually restarted, Benfica snatched a dramatic 95th minute equaliser when Angel Di Maria scored from the spot after a highly controversial penalty was given against Malo Gusto.

Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni was sent off for a second yellow card in extra time and then Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored in extra time to finally settle a madcap, unforgettable game.

Now Chelsea must play Palmeiras in the quarter finals on Friday and Philadelphia and if Manchester City win their game with Al-Hilal in Orlando on Monday then they are on course for a semi final showdown in New York if they both progress.
The chance of an all English showdown 3,500 miles from home in New York would be an American dream and a red hot ticket for FIFA. But FIFA must overcome big problems in the Club World Cup to make this tournament a big success and also next year's international World Cup - starting with the weather.
They cannot change nature but they can think about where games are played and if you can reduce the safety protocols to stop such big delays. Chelsea now face Palmeiras in the next round and the celebrations at the end against Benfica showed how much this meant.

James added: 'We're in a stage of a tournament where you win, you carry on, you lose, you go home. It's knockout football. We got so close in 90 minutes and we felt short. And yeah, we managed to do it in extra time.
'You don't make up the favourites, we're the players. You know, we try and start well against whoever we're playing. It's going to be another tough game. Palmeiras has got amazing players and they're a good side. We're going to set out to win.'

Players' union accuse Gianni Infantino of overseeing 'MASSACRE' of player welfare from his 'ivory tower' as they launch scathing attack at Club World Cup

French players' union the UNFP has criticised the Club World Cup, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino accused of overseeing a 'massacre' of player welfare. The UNFP claimed that Infantino, watching on from his 'ivory tower', isn't concerned about the impact that the extra games will have on the physical and mental health of players. As reported by the Associated Press, the UNFP said in a statement: 'The incongruity of the situation is not lost on anyone, except, of course, Gianni Infantino and his flatterers. From the height of his ivory tower, which he parades around the world, the FIFA president is not bothered by the fate that the international calendar reserves for the game's leading players. 'His (Infantino's) Club World Cup proves, to the point of absurdity, that it is urgent to stop this massacre game. He flouts the physical and mental health of players for a few more dollars.' Infantino has received much criticism regarding the Club World Cup, with this year's edition expanded to include 32 teams. There have been widespread concerns about the impact that involvement in the tournament will have on players. The comments from UNFP follow on from former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp's criticisms of the Club World Cup. Klopp, who now works as the head of global soccer for Red Bull, described the tournament as 'the worst idea ever in football'. Speaking to German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, he said: 'The Club World Cup is the worst idea ever implemented in football. 'People who have never had anything to do with day-to-day business are coming up with ideas. 'I fear that next season players will suffer injuries they've never had before. If not, then it'll happen at the World Cup or afterwards.' Many of the leading clubs in world football, such as Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, are taking part in the competition, with concerns being raised about how players will be affected in the long term given their lack of rest this summer.

Chelsea beat Newcastle in race for Joao Pedro with big-money deal agreed

Chelsea have won the race to sign Brighton striker Joao Pedro, agreeing a deal worth 'in excess of £50m,' according to reports. Newcastle were also interested in the Brazil international during this transfer window, but the Blues have got their man. The Athletic report that a fee has been agreed with the Seagulls that is north of the £50m mark and personal terms were no problem. Pedro was keen on the move to Stamford Bridge and has agreed a seven-year contract with Chelsea, running until 2032. Pedro moved to Brighton from Watford in 2023 for £30m and had two solid, if not spectacular, seasons with the Seagulls. His two Premier League campaigns produced 19 goals in 58 appearances, while he netted 30 goals in 70 outings across all competitions. He won his first of three Brazil caps in 2023 but is yet to find the back of the net for his country. Pedro's move is yet to be confirmed, with a medial still to be carried out, but there is not expected to be any issue and the striker is likely to join his new teammates at the Club World Cup in America. Chelsea are revamping their options in attack this summer having already signed Liam Delap from Ipswich Town for £30m. The 22-year-old has already scored his first goal for the club during the Club World Cup and will hope to play regularly over the coming season. Nicolas Jackson remains at the club, but his future is in doubt after the arrival of Delap and the incoming Pedro. In a surprise twist, Arsenal have reported to hold an interest in Jackson as they continue their search for a new striker this summer. The Gunners are looking to sign at least one centre-forward, with Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko the two likeliest candidates. Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins remains a possibility, while Jackson has emerged as a possibility, but seems the least likely of the four after two inconsistent seasons with Chelsea. The Senegal international has scored 30 goals in 80 appearances across all competitions since his move from Villarreal. More Trending At times he has looked very threatening and certainly has plenty of impressive attributes, but his finishing has been questioned and has missed a lot of chances in a Chelsea shirt. The Blues are not rushing the deal as Gittens has already featured for Dortmund in the Club World Cup, meaning he would not be able to play for Maresca in the United States. But Gittens may still link up with his new Chelsea teammates in the US, with the Blues preparing the second part of his medical.
