Orange economy is the global term for the creative sector, and spans films, television, gaming, design and fashion.
The Prime Minister was addressing a gathering of over 5,000 people including film stars, content creators, media and entertainment industry stakeholders, foreign delegates and policymakers. A showcase of India's media and entertainment prowess, the WAVES summit, organised by the ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the government of Maharashtra, aims to unlock a $50 billion market by 2029, expanding the country's footprint in the global entertainment economy.
It was time, said Modi for the world to 'Create in India.' He called upon India's young creators to drive the nation's orange economy forward. The government stands firmly behind creative professionals, supporting them through initiatives such as Skill India, Startup Support, policies for the AVGC Industry, and global platforms like WAVES, the prime minister said.
'WAVES will serve as a major platform where creativity meets coding, where software blends with storytelling, and art merges with augmented reality,' he said. He urged young creators to make the most of this opportunity and to dream big.
The Prime Minister highlighted that artists, innovators, investors and policymakers from over 100 countries had come to Mumbai to lay the foundation for a global ecosystem of talent and creativity. 'WAVES is not merely an acronym but a wave representing culture, creativity, and universal connectivity', he said. The platform, he hoped, will serve as a bridge connecting Indian creators with global storytellers, animators with global visionaries, and transform gamers into global champions. He invited international investors and creators to embrace India as their content playground and explore the country's vast creative ecosystem. He also urged investors to invest not just in platforms, but also in people.
In his 35-minute address to a packed hall at the Jio World Centre, Modi said there are growth opportunities in the live concert industry and vast potential in the global animation market, which currently stands at over $430 billion, and is projected to double in the next decade. He highlighted that this presents a significant opportunity for India's animation and graphics industry, urging stakeholders to leverage this expansion for greater international reach.
Indian films have now reached viewers in over 100 countries and international audiences are watching Indian content with subtitles, signalling a deeper engagement with India's stories, Modi said. 'With a billion-plus population, India is also a land of a billion-plus stories…This treasure (of stories) is timeless, thought-provoking and truly global,' he said, adding that it is the right time for the world to 'Create In India.'
Modi said that the first edition of the WAVES Summit has captured global attention thanks to the efforts of the summit's advisory board comprising top film stars and media and entertainment industry representatives. Reaffirming his belief in collective effort, he urged media and entertainment industry stakeholders to continue mentoring the WAVES platform in the future. He also announced the setting up of the WAVES Awards for art and creativity. He emphasized the need for sustained commitment to the idea behind WAVES, stating that the goal is to win the hearts of people across the world and inspire generations through creativity.
The Prime Minister's address was preceded by a star-studded introduction to WAVES by a clutch of film celebrities, who are also members of the advisory body for the summit, including Shah Rukh Khan, Anupam Kher, Mohanlal and Hema Malini.
The four-day Summit also features the WAVES Bazaar, a global e-marketplace with over 6,100 buyers, 5,200 sellers, and 2,100 projects. It aims to connect buyers and sellers locally and globally, ensuring wide-reaching networking and business opportunities. It is also hosting a Global Media Dialogue where ministers from 25 countries will participate.
The Summit is being attended by people from 90 countries, with more than 10,000 delegates, 1,000 creators, 300+ companies, and 350+ startups.

Quality Control Orders expanded from 14 to 156 in a decade: Minister
New Delhi: The number of Quality Control Orders (QCOs) in the country has grown from just 14 covering 106 products in 2014 to 156 QCOs covering 672 products over the last decade, said Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. Addressing the 75th anniversary celebration of SGS in India in the national capital, the minister said the government is working to introduce more horizontal and product-specific standards to ensure that all goods and services made in India meet global benchmarks. Goyal also reaffirmed the Prime Minister's vision of 'Zero Defect, Zero Effect', saying that with zero defect, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reflecting on higher quality standards, high quality products, goods and services from India and with zero effect he is focusing on sustainability. The Minister outlined three key focus areas for industry and stakeholders in India's quality journey: 'Industry needs to identify areas where testing is required — BIS has ample funds. Larger industry body should support small MSMEs — upgrading their quality to global standards. Increase stakeholder consultations and participation of industry, including our innovators, academia, startups, so that India can be a pioneer in setting global standards,' said Goyal. Goyal emphasised the government's commitment to strengthening India's quality infrastructure and fostering global trust in Indian products and services. He stated that India is steadily moving towards a unified quality regime for both domestic and international markets. 'We gradually get into the mindset of having two quality standards — one a locally accepted standard and another an export quality standard. India today is focused and rapidly moving towards a nation which will have only one standard and that will be a high quality standard. A standard that will work in India and the same standard will be exported to the rest of the world,' he said. Referring to India's long dependence on foreign standards, Goyal noted that over decades India has been dependent on foreign standards for quality but now, India's space and progress will be decided by our own Indian standards. He further added that Indian agencies like BIS, FSSAI, and various line ministries are working in coordination to harmonise Indian standards with global ones. On the testing and certification front, the Minister said, 'I would like to invite any and every industry in the country which requires more modern testing facilities, which requires testing facilities comparable to the best in the world, and I would like the industries to demand that India should have those facilities and BIS is willing to fund 100% of the amount required to bring those testing facilities in our country.' He emphasised the importance of building trust through testing, stating, 'Every test result should carry with it the weight of trust of 140 crore Indians. They trust a certificate of quality.' Highlighting the government's partnership with EFTA countries including Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Iceland, Goyal said the recently finalised Free Trade Agreement will soon come into effect. 'We have come together to expand trade, investments, work together for the shared prosperity of the people. These MRAs will stand on the strength of high quality testing, high quality inspection, high quality compliance and I am sure SGS will continue to serve this partnership,' he noted.

Trinidad & Tobago extends full support to India for UNSC permanent membership
India and Trinidad and Tobago have inked six agreements to boost cooperation in several sectors, including infrastructure and pharmaceuticals, following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his counterpart from the Caribbean nation, Kamla Persad-Bissessar. In the meeting held on Friday, Prime Minister Modi announced a decision by India to issue Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards up to the sixth generation of the Indian diaspora of Trinidad and Tobago, where over 40 per cent of the population is of Indian origin. It is the first bilateral visit by an Indian prime minister to this Caribbean island nation since 1999. In their talks, Modi and Bissessar also explored potential collaboration in areas of defence, agriculture, healthcare and digital transformation, unified payments interface (UPI) and capacity building. Significantly, Trinidad and Tobago reaffirmed its full support to India for a permanent membership of an expanded United Nations Security Council, according to a joint statement released on Saturday. The six MoUs will provide for deeper cooperation between India and Trinidad and Tobago in the fields of pharmacopoeia, quick-impact projects, culture, sports and diplomatic training, among others. The pact on sports is aimed at fostering training, talent exchange, infrastructure development, and joint capacity building. PM Modi also reiterated his offer to train aspiring young women cricketers from Trinidad and Tobago in India. Delving into pressing global issues, Modi and Bissessar reaffirmed the need for comprehensive reforms in the United Nations, including expansion of the UN Security Council, to better reflect current realities. 'While recognising the rising geopolitical tensions and global conflicts, both leaders called for dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward,' the joint statement said. It was also agreed that India would support Trinidad and Tobago's candidature for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the period 2027-28, and the island nation would support New Delhi's bid for the period 2028-29. 'The landmark visit of the prime minister to Trinidad and Tobago has given a boost to the special ties between the countries,' the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. In her remarks during the delegation-level talks, Bissesar noted that PM Modi's 'landmark visit' to Trinidad and Tobago will reinvigorate the deep-rooted bilateral ties between the two countries. On his part, PM Modi expressed appreciation for Trinidad and Tobago's strong support and solidarity to the people of India in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack. 'The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fight terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,' the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. PM Modi also met Christine Carla Kangaloo, the president of Trinidad and Tobago. In a social media post, Modi said a new momentum was added to the friendship between India and Trinidad and Tobago. 'Thank you, Trinidad & Tobago. The moments here will never be forgotten. We've added new momentum to the India-Trinidad & Tobago friendship. My gratitude to President Christine Carla Kangaloo, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the government and people of this wonderful nation,' he said. Several announcements to foster bilateral ties, including the offer of an OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) card to the sixth generation of the people of Indian origin in the Caribbean nation, were made. The MEA said Modi and Bissesar agreed to work together for greater solidarity among the countries of the Global South and to strengthen India-CARICOM partnership. The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is an intergovernmental organisation of 15 member states in the Caribbean region, having the primary objective to promote economic integration and cooperation among the members. 'Both leaders also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest. They called upon greater cooperation to deal with contemporary challenges such as climate change, disaster management, and cybersecurity,' the MEA said. On PM Modi's meeting with President Kangaloo, the MEA said it was marked by warmth and a reaffirmation of the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations. 'The prime minister congratulated President Kangaloo on receiving the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award this year and expressed deep appreciation for her distinguished public service,' it said. 'The two leaders reflected on the enduring bonds shared by the two countries, anchored by strong people-to-people ties,' it added. The MEA said PM Modi invited Bissessar to visit India, which she accepted. Earlier on Friday, PM Modi addressed the parliament of the Caribbean nation and spoke about the cricket connection between the two countries. 'There is a natural warmth in the connection between our two countries. I must say, Indians are among the most passionate fans of the West Indies cricket team! We cheer for them with all our heart, except when they are playing against India,' he said. Modi also lauded the contribution of Indian-origin people to Trinidad and Tobago's development journey. 'From politics to poetry, cricket to commerce, calypso to chutney, they contribute to every field. They are an integral part of the vibrant diversity that you all respect.' 'Together, you have built a nation that lives its motto: 'Together we aspire, together we achieve',' Modi said.
