Kimberly-Clark begins major US expansion with new Ohio & SC facilities

Fibre2Fashion02-05-2025
Kimberly-Clark Corporation (NYSE: KMB) announced plans to invest over $2 billion over the next 5 years in its North America business, marking the company's largest domestic expansion in more than 30 years. Amid rising demand for its consumer brands, which include Huggies diapers, Kleenex tissue, Depend incontinence products, Scott kitchen towels, and Cottonelle bath tissue, these investments will significantly enhance its US manufacturing capacity, accelerate its innovation plans and support its ambitious growth targets.
This broad-based investment program centers on two transformative projects: a new advanced manufacturing facility in Warren, Ohio, and an expansion of its Beech Island, South Carolina, site with a state-of-the-art automated distribution center. It also includes additional capital expenditure linked to innovation and automation upgrades across its North America supply chain network.
Kimberly-Clark will invest over $2 billion in its North America business over five yearsâ€'its largest domestic expansion in over 30 years. The plan includes a new facility in Warren, Ohio, and an automated distribution centre in South Carolina, creating over 900 skilled jobs. The move supports manufacturing capacity, innovation, and long-term growth as part of its Powering Care transformation.
These projects are expected to create more than 900 highly skilled jobs in industrial automation and advanced manufacturing.
"This landmark investment represents a strategic bet on the American consumer and our ability to drive innovation-led sustainable growth for Kimberly-Clark," said Russ Torres, Group President, Kimberly-Clark North America . "It reflects the confidence we have in our long-term growth plans and complements a broad range of commercial and R&D investments we have been making throughout the business as part of our Powering Care transformation journey."
Better Products, Closer to Consumers
The new facility in Warren, Ohio, strategically located in geographic proximity to roughly 117 million consumers will serve as a vital hub for the Northeast and Midwest regions.
Spread across more than a million square feet, the Warren facility will provide the capacity needed to unleash future growth for Kimberly-Clark's fastest growing personal care categories. Its proprietary manufacturing technologies will enable the creation of new and improved next-generation consumer products, rooted in material invention, product engineering, and manufacturing process innovation.
"We welcome Kimberly-Clark's first investment in Ohio," said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine . "Kimberly-Clark has advanced-production facilities all over the world, and the fact that they are now coming to Trumbull County says a great deal about the area's workforce and Ohio's leadership in rebuilding the domestic manufacturing supply."
"Kimberly-Clark's decision to make its first Ohio investment in Trumbull County would not have happened without close collaboration from our partner at Lake to River as well as at the state and local level to establish a site that is attractive for both rapid development and long-term growth," said JobsOhio President and CEO J.P. Nauseef . "We all look forward to working closely alongside Kimberly-Clark as it launches its new cutting-edge manufacturing facility," he added.
Creating a Simpler, Faster and more Hi-Tech Logistics Network of the Future
Meanwhile, a new Regional Distribution Center (DC) in Beech Island, South Carolina, will create the infrastructure necessary to support future scale and unlock network efficiencies. Located next to the company's largest manufacturing facility, the automated DC will significantly increase the site's ability to direct-ship and streamline its distribution footprint. The facility will leverage advanced robotics, AI-powered logistics systems, and high-density automated storage to dramatically improve operational efficiencies and fast-track speed to market.
South Carolina Governor, Henry McMaster , said, "Thanks to South Carolina's exceptional business climate, global leaders like Kimberly-Clark Corporation are finding lasting success in our state. The company's commitment to investing in South Carolina is truly something worth celebrating, and we congratulate Kimberly-Clark and Aiken County on this milestone."
"These investments in North America represent the strong progress we are making on our end-to-end supply chain transformation, specifically in terms of network optimization," said Tamera Fenske, Kimberly-Clark Chief Supply Chain Officer . "By bringing together manufacturing and distribution under one automated roof, we are building a more agile, responsive, and resilient manufacturing network that will enhance service levels for our retail partners and contribute to our gross productivity plan. Beech Island is the largest site in our network, so this new investment will drive impact at scale," she added.
The announcement comes one year after Kimberly-Clark launched its company-wide transformation initiative – the most comprehensive in its 150-year history. The investment underscores how the company is executing against its strategy to deliver on global growth targets, with North America positioned to be a key growth driver. Construction for both facilities is scheduled to begin in May 2025 and expected to be completed over the next 2-3 years. 125 immigrant billionaires now hold $1.3 trillion of America's wealth

Immigrants aren't just cheap labour — they help make America wealthier. The 2025 Forbes list of foreign-born billionaires living in the US, along with Meta's newly announced Superintelligence Lab run entirely by immigrant researchers, reflects how central immigrants have become to the country's growth — economically and technologically. A record 125 foreign-born American citizens now appear on Forbes' annual list of billionaires residing in the US, up from 92 in 2022. Together, they account for 14 per cent of America's nearly 900 billionaires and hold $1.3 trillion in combined wealth — around 18 per cent of the country's total billionaire fortune. Among the top 10 richest Americans, three are immigrants. The world's wealthiest person, Elon Musk, was born in South Africa and moved to the US via Canada as a student. He is now worth $393.1 billion. Google cofounder Sergey Brin, who came to the US from Russia as a child, follows with a net worth of $139.7 billion. Nvidia's Jensen Huang, born in Taiwan and sent to the US as a child during political unrest in Thailand, is worth $137.9 billion. These 125 billionaire immigrants hail from 43 countries, but most were born in just a handful of places. • Indian-origin immigrants leads with 12 billionaires, up from 7 in 2022 • Taiwan and Israel follow closely with 11 each • Canada (9), China (8), and Germany and Iran (6 each) also feature prominently Among the new entrants are AMD CEO Lisa Su, cousin of Nvidia's Huang, and Iranian-born biotech leader Maky Zanganeh, now co-CEO of Summit Therapeutics. 'Being an immigrant is about seeking the best opportunities and learning to adapt to new environments,' Forbes quoted Zanganeh, whose firm's lung cancer drug candidate helped push her into the billionaire bracket. Indians added five new immigrant billionaires this year — more than any other country. Sundar Pichai, Satya Nadella, and Nikesh Arora are now part of this cohort, joining other US-based billionaires like Jay Chaudhry, Vinod Khosla, and Romesh Wadhwani. Most are self-made, and many came for education While over a quarter of US billionaires inherited their wealth, 93 per cent of immigrant billionaires built it themselves. Nearly two-thirds made their fortune in tech (53 people) or finance (28 people). Many came to the US for higher education and stayed on. According to Forbes, Musk arrived to study at the University of Pennsylvania. Jay Chaudhry, now worth $17.9 billion, flew from India to the University of Cincinnati in 1980 having never been on a plane. Shahid Khan, owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars, arrived at 16 to study in Illinois and washed dishes for $1.20 an hour his first day. Immigrants leading Meta's AI lab Beyond billionaires, immigrants are also behind some of the most cutting-edge innovation in the US today. Meta's newly launched Superintelligence Lab, tasked with building next-generation AI systems, is staffed entirely by immigrant researchers. The 11-member team includes talent from India, China, the UK, South Africa, and Australia — all with advanced US university degrees and work histories at top AI firms like OpenAI, Google and DeepMind. 'Meta's Superintelligence Lab, led entirely by immigrant researchers, is the practical reality we needed to see,' Praneet Singh, AVP of University Partnership at upGrad's study abroad division told Business Standard. 'AI innovation is truly going borderless and India continues to serve as a strong hub of ready talent.' He added, 'It's quite paradoxical, though — while our talent is ready, mobility remains constrained. Despite policy shifts like STEM OPT extensions and improved green card processing, visa constraints and bureaucratic uncertainties continue to slow down global movement.' This rise in immigrant wealth and innovation comes against the backdrop of tighter immigration scrutiny under the Trump administration, with longer visa processing times and expanded enforcement.

US student loan crisis deepens: How SAVE Plan borrowers could pay $3,500 more in interest annually

US student loan crisis deepens under SAVE Plan. The financial burden on millions of American student loan borrowers is set to increase substantially from next month, following a major policy shift by the US Department of Education. Interest will resume on student loans under the federal SAVE repayment plan from August 1, a move that could result in an average additional cost of $3,500 (approximately ₹2.9 lakh) annually per borrower, according to recent estimates. The decision comes amid ongoing legal battles over President Joe Biden's flagship student loan relief initiative, the SAVE (Saving on a Valuable Education) plan, which had temporarily paused both payments and interest accrual for eligible borrowers since mid-2023. The Education Department now cites a February 2025 court ruling as the reason it can no longer legally suspend interest, even as repayments remain on hold. 7.84 million borrowers affected According to official figures, the interest resumption will impact approximately 7.84 million borrowers currently enrolled in the SAVE plan. While monthly repayments are still paused under an extended forbearance, interest will begin accumulating from August, potentially adding to the long-term debt load of affected individuals. An analysis released by the Student Borrower Protection Center (SBPC) estimates that the change could lead to an aggregate increase of $27 million in interest charges over a 12-month period. The average borrower under the SAVE plan, which was designed to provide income-driven relief, could now be charged around $300 per month in interest—a sharp deviation from the original framework of the programme. Legal and administrative bottlenecks The Education Department has maintained that the February ruling invalidated the legal basis it used to pause interest accrual. As a result, it has begun notifying borrowers of the change. However, critics argue that no court order explicitly mandates the resumption of interest, and that the Department retains discretion under federal law to waive interest during periods of suspension. Compounding the issue is the administrative backlog facing the Department. According to court filings, nearly 1.5 million applications for alternative income-driven repayment (IDR) plans remain unprocessed. Borrowers have been advised to consider switching from the SAVE plan to other IDR plans such as Income-Based Repayment (IBR), Pay As You Earn (PAYE), or Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR) to potentially avoid interest accrual. However, processing delays could leave many borrowers in limbo for weeks or even months. Wider implications for international students The policy change has implications for international students, including thousands of Indian-origin graduates in the US who rely on federal aid and income-driven repayment options. Many of these borrowers enrolled in the SAVE plan expecting extended relief and predictable repayment terms. The sudden shift in interest accrual conditions has added uncertainty to financial planning for both current and prospective students. The development marks a fresh chapter in the prolonged battle over student loan relief in the United States. The Biden administration's broader student debt cancellation efforts have faced repeated legal challenges from Republican-led states, stalling or reversing key components of reform. The SAVE plan, once heralded as a game-changing safety net for low- and middle-income borrowers, now faces an uncertain future as litigation continues. What lies ahead While loan repayments under the SAVE plan are not expected to resume until at least December 2025, the resumption of interest could sharply increase the financial burden on borrowers in the interim. Advocacy groups have called for immediate administrative relief and faster processing of repayment plan transitions, but the Department's legal position remains unchanged as of now. Borrowers are advised to monitor official updates, review their loan status, and explore alternative plans promptly. As legal challenges continue and administrative delays persist, millions remain caught in a widening student debt crisis with no immediate resolution in sight. Ready to navigate global policies?
