Indonesia volcano eruption forces flight cancellations, evacuations
SIKKA: Dozens of flights were cancelled and evacuations ordered after Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in eastern Indonesia erupted, sending a column of ash 10 kilometres into the sky, authorities said on Wednesday (Jun 18).
The 1,584-metre volcano on Flores island erupted on Tuesday, prompting officials to raise its alert level to the highest on a four-tier scale.
'Due to volcano activity of Lewotobi Laki-Laki in East Nusa Tenggara, several flights at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport are cancelled,' airport operator Angkasa Pura Indonesia said in a statement.
Flights operated by Jetstar and Virgin Australia, along with services by Air India, Tigerair, Juneyao Airlines and Air New Zealand, were affected, according to the Bali international airport website.
Jetstar confirmed it had delayed flights to and from Bali, with expectations that the ash cloud would clear by Wednesday evening.
AirAsia also said it had cancelled or rescheduled flights to Bali, Lombok and Labuan Bajo, and was assisting affected passengers.
A total of 32 domestic and international flights at Bali's Ngurah Rai airport were cancelled. The airport remained open, with a customer service agent telling AFP, 'It depends on the route and also the airline.'
Nearby, Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Airport in Maumere was closed until Thursday morning. Two additional local airports on Flores were also temporarily shut, Indonesia's transport ministry said.
The eruption disrupted travel for approximately 14,000 passengers.
TREMORS CONTINUE, EVACUATIONS UNDERWAY
Volcanic ash fell on nearby villages, forcing the evacuation of at least one on Tuesday night, according to Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency.
Ongoing tremors and eruptions were still being detected on Wednesday, spokesperson Abdul Muhari said.
'No less than 450 families from affected villages… have settled in temporary housing equipped with electricity and clean water facilities,' he said.
The geology agency urged residents and tourists to remain at least seven kilometres away from the crater and warned of possible lahar flows, fast-moving volcanic mudflows — if rain falls in the area.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, meaning 'man' in Indonesian, is paired with a neighbouring peak, Lewotobi Perempuan ('woman').
In November, the volcano erupted repeatedly, killing nine people, disrupting international flights to Bali and displacing thousands.
Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, sits on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' and is prone to frequent volcanic and seismic activity.

Indonesia rescuers try to reach Brazilian after fall at volcano
JAKARTA: Indonesian rescuers tried on Tuesday (Jun 24) to reach a Brazilian tourist who fell down a ravine at a volcano popular with hikers after spotting her unmoving body, authorities said. The woman identified by relatives and media reports as Juliana Marins, 26, went missing on Saturday at Mount Rinjani on Lombok island, which neighbours Bali. Authorities think Marins fell and believe they sighted her on Monday but rescuers were held back because of bad weather. "Yesterday morning we detected the victim. We deployed a team to the location but we were hampered by the very steep terrain and the foggy weather," Muhammad Hariyadi, head of Lombok's Mataram Search and Rescue Office, told AFP on Tuesday. "When we detected her using a drone, she was not moving." Rescuers said they were using thermal drones, mountaineering gear and a helicopter in a bid to reach the Brazilian, who was backpacking around Southeast Asia. "One group is monitoring the evacuation using a thermal drone. The second team is doing the manual evacuation process with a rope as the main tool," said Hariyadi. "This morning around 50 rescuers have been dispatched and we plan to send a helicopter team to scour the location." An Instagram account set up by family and friends to call for her urgent rescue has amassed more than one million followers. "Hang in there Juliana! Help is on the way!" read a post on the account. The Brazilian embassy in Jakarta did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment. Marins' last posts on Instagram show her backpacking around Thailand and Vietnam before reaching Indonesia. Lombok island is a tourist destination known for its idyllic beaches and lush greenery, and many try to climb Rinjani, Indonesia's second-tallest volcano, for its panoramic views. In 2018 hundreds of hikers and guides became stranded by landslides on the mountain after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the island. At least 17 were killed across the island including one on the mountain.

Bomb threat diverts plane of Haj pilgrims in Indonesia, second in days
JAKARTA: A plane carrying hundreds of Haj pilgrims back to Indonesia from the Middle East was diverted on Saturday (Jun 21) after a bomb threat, the transport ministry and police said, the second such incident in a week. Saudia Airlines flight SV5688 had flown from the Saudi city of Jeddah to the Omani capital of Muscat before travelling on to Indonesia where it was due to land in Surabaya, a city on the main island of Java. But air traffic control officers in the Indonesian capital Jakarta received a call about a bomb threat for the flight, prompting its diversion to Kualanamu International Airport in Medan city Saturday morning, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation said. Regional airport authority head Asri Santosa said in a statement that officers were checking the plane after its arrival but the airport on Sumatra island remained operational. All 376 passengers, Haj pilgrims from Java, and 13 crew members were safe at the airport, North Sumatra police spokesman Ferry Walintukan told AFP. A bomb squad was deployed to sweep the aircraft. The passengers are due to resume their journey on Sunday, said Asri. According to Indonesian news site Tempo, the country's anti-terror squad Densus 88 is investigating the latest bomb threat. On Tuesday, a plane carrying 442 Haj pilgrims back from Saudi Arabia to Jakarta was also diverted to Medan after an email bomb threat was sent to authorities. The Indonesian National Police (Polri) is in contact with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation on the email bomb threat, Polri chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo told reporters on Saturday.
