Residents successfully petition state to audit the City of Humansville
The Humansville community gathered 170 certified signatures to trigger a petition audit, well above the 135 signatures that were required.
'I want to thank the people of Humansville for taking the time and effort to collect the signatures necessary to initiate this petition audit. With the numerous issues that have occurred in the city over the last year, and with allegations of missing money, it's important that we shine the light of truth and transparency on the city's government,' said Auditor Fitzpatrick.
The Missouri Auditor's Office says the City of Humansville has been the subject of state investigations regarding possible misuse of taxpayer funds and election interference in the past year. An alderman also filed a lawsuit against the city, alleging that it violated the Sunshine Law.

The Humansville Board of Aldermen tried to pass a resolution letting the State Auditor's office conduct an audit, but the resolution ultimately failed.
'We will do our best to give taxpayers a better understanding of the financial health and operational effectiveness of their city. If necessary, we will also provide recommendations to improve the performance of their government,' Auditor Fitzpatrick said. 'I urge everyone to be patient while we perform this intensive review of the operations of the city government and encourage anyone with information that may be helpful to our audit to reach out through our Whistleblower Hotline.'
Individuals can provide confidential information for the auditor's office to consider during the audit by calling the State Auditor's Whistleblower Hotline at 800-347-8597, by email at moaudit@auditor.mo.gov or online at the state auditor's website.

Law school grad has medical emergency and collapses during bar exam in New York
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) — A law school graduate collapsed while taking the bar exam in a New York City suburb this week, prompting an emergency response as other aspiring lawyers worked on their exams. But some Reddit users claiming they were among the test-takers Wednesday say they're upset the exam wasn't halted outright. Hofstra University spokesperson Terry Coniglio said Friday that the test-taker collapsed shortly before a scheduled lunch break at the Long Island campus. Hofstra Public Safety officers immediately provided life saving emergency care, including CPR and defibrillation, until paramedics arrived and transported them to a local hospital, she said. The New York State Board of Law Examiners, which administers the exam, said the medical emergency occurred 'only a few minutes' before the end of the exam's morning session and staff promptly contacted emergency responders. 'The exam concluded as our staff was obtaining medical aid for the candidate,' the Friday statement said. 'As soon as the exam ended the proctors collected the exams and the candidates were dismissed from the room so that EMTs could provide the needed medical care to the candidate.' The university and the state board wished the law candidate, who has not been named, a speedy recovery. The board said it is also continuing to review what happened, including which candidates may have been impacted, and 'will formulate an appropriate response in due course.'

U.S. aid money to Gaza trickles in, belying Trump's claims, as U.S. officials visit
Despite President Donald Trump's repeated assertion this week that the United States has contributed $60 million for food to Gaza, U.S. pledges have been half of that amount, only a fraction of which has been actually disbursed. A State Department spokesperson said Friday that 'we have approved funding for $30 million' to the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, the controversial U.S.-Israeli backed food distribution system, adding that 'an initial amount has been disbursed as of this week.' The spokesman, speaking on the condition of anonymity under rules set by the State Department, declined to address Trump's remarks, first made during his visit to Scotland last weekend.

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly talks about decision to leave National Governors Association
TOPEKA (KSNT) — Kansas Governor Laura Kelly is joining another prominent Democrat in stepping away from the bipartisan National Governors Association (NGA). Kelly is currently the Chair of the Democratic Governors Association. She told 27 News that she, alongside Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, are leaving the organization over disappointment with the group's failure to push back against the administration of President Donald Trump. Kelly said Kansas is not benefitting enough from the NGA for her to remain a member. 'I just felt like Kansas was not getting a return on investment, and we will keep our eyes on it,' Kelly said. 'The NGA does some very good things particularly in the area of training for governor's staff, but there also needs to be a state rights advocate and I think they've sort of fallen down on that role.' Why legalizing weed in Kansas isn't working Kelly said she will stop paying her NGA dues at the end of July. Additionally, she said she's open to rejoining the group once it focuses more on advocating for states. For more Capitol Bureau news, click here.
