Militants storm police station, torch banks, kill a boy in southwest Pakistan
The boy died when the attackers fired on civilians indiscriminately during the attacks in Mastung, a district in Balochistan province, said Jan Mohammad, a local government administrator.
Mohammad said some of the insurgents were also killed in the shootout with security forces.
A provincial government spokesman, Shahid Rind, said a security operation had been launched to pursue the assailants.
No group immediately claimed responsibility, though suspicion is likely to fall on the outlawed Baloch Liberation Army, or BLA, which often targets security forces and civilians in Balochistan and elsewhere.
The United States designated the BLA a terrorist organization in 2019.
Balochistan has long been the scene of a low-level insurgency by separatist groups seeking independence from the central government.
The province is also home to militants linked to the Pakistani Taliban and Daesh group.

Originally founded in 1964 by Pakistan, Iran and Turkiye, the association now includes member states from South Asia, Central Asia and parts of West Asia and the Caucasus. ECO aims to promote sustainable economic development in the region, aiming at joint welfare and wellbeing of its members. The ECO region is home to over 460 million inhabitants and expands over 8 million square kilometers of land. It is counted among one of the oldest intergovernmental organizations. Its current members include Pakistan, Turkiye, Iran, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. 'During the Summit, the Prime Minister will share Pakistan's perspective on key regional and global challenges, reaffirm Pakistan's commitment to the ECO Vision 2025, and advocate for enhanced intra-regional trade, transport connectivity, energy cooperation, and sustainable development,' the foreign office said. The statement said the Pakistani prime minister will also hold bilateral meetings with other ECO leaders on the sidelines of the summit to discuss matters of mutual interest with them. The development takes place as Pakistan pushes for enhanced regional trade and security cooperation with its allies in the Central Asia, the Middle East and other regions. Islamabad views trade, energy cooperation and increased connectivity as vital to consolidate its economic gains, especially as it looks to escape a macroeconomic crisis that has drained its resources and caused its foreign exchange reserves to plummet in the past few years. Sharif's government has repeatedly called for mutually beneficial economic partnerships with regional allies instead of loans.

Syria's Interior Ministry Stresses Cooperation with Saudi Arabia to Combat Crime, Terrorism
The Syrian Ministry of Interior has confirmed it is coordinating closely with Saudi Arabia on joint security operations aimed at tackling organized crime and terrorist threats. Many of these efforts, officials say, remain deliberately out of the public eye for security reasons. Speaking to Asharq Al-Awsat, Interior Ministry spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba revealed that cooperation between Damascus and Riyadh spans intelligence sharing, organizational support, and capacity building. He highlighted Saudi Arabia's advanced security structures and extensive experience, emphasizing that Syria has already benefited substantially from this collaboration. Al-Baba indicated that the coming period could see Saudi Arabia providing specialized training to Syrian units and personnel. In recent months, several high-level meetings have taken place, including talks early last month in Riyadh between Saudi Interior Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif and his Syrian counterpart, Anas Khattab. According to the Saudi Press Agency, Prince Abdulaziz stressed that the meeting was held under directives from King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, reflecting the Kingdom's commitment to supporting Syria's stability and sharing expertise. Just last week, the two interior ministries announced a significant joint operation in which Syrian authorities, acting on Saudi intelligence, seized large quantities of amphetamine tablets hidden inside industrial sites in Idlib and Aleppo provinces. The shipment was intended to be smuggled across the border. According to al-Baba, the operation successfully disrupted the movement of tens of thousands of captagon pills, describing it as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle smuggling networks linked to remnants of the former regime. He said many similar operations remain undisclosed due to operational sensitivities. In April, Saudi Arabia hosted a Syrian security delegation for an in-depth review of the Kingdom's policing practices and advanced security systems to help modernize Syria's own institutions. Talks between the two ministers also addressed broader cooperation in areas such as counterterrorism, fighting organized crime, border protection, and intelligence sharing. Officials underscored that this partnership aims to create sustainable mechanisms to improve stability and security across Syria.

Pakistan says citizens can register for Hajj 2026 through online portal, 15 designated banks
ISLAMABAD: The registration process for Hajj 2026 is underway, Pakistan's religion ministry said on Wednesday, informing citizens that they can do so via its online portal and 15 designated banks across the country. Pakistan's Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) said last week it has begun the registration process for next year's Hajj pilgrimage. After the registration, which will continue till July 9, pilgrims will be able to opt for government or private Hajj scheme. No fee will have to be paid for Hajj registration. 'Overseas Pakistanis holding a valid Pakistani passport are also advised to complete their registration through the online portal as soon as possible,' MoRA said in a statement. The ministry further said it was mandatory for anyone who intended to travel from Pakistan for the pilgrimage to get themselves registered. 'The costs of the Hajj package and other terms and conditions will be announced separately in accordance with the Hajj Policy 2026,' the statement said. Pakistan received a quota of 179,210 pilgrims from Saudi Arabia for Hajj 2025, which was evenly divided between government and private Hajj operators. While the government filled its full allocation of over 88,000 pilgrims, a major portion of the private quota remained unutilized due to delays by companies in meeting payment and registration deadlines. Last month, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed the religious affairs ministry to begin preparations for the 2026 Hajj immediately, calling for urgent reforms to the country's private Hajj scheme.
