'Trust me son - they'll love you' - Dicks on Hammers move

BBC News19 hours ago
Former West Ham defender Julian Dicks has been reflecting on his move to the Hammers in the latest episode of BBC Radio Scotland's Sacked in the Morning podcast. He moved from Birmingham City to the Hammers as a 20-year-old in 1998 for £300,000 for his first taste of top-flight football. Before Upton Park was converted into an all-seater stadium during the 90s, the 'Chicken Run' at the front of the East Stand was notorious for the intimidation from the fans gathered there - as Dicks knew from his experience being an opposition player there as a 17-year-old."I remember [West Ham manager at the time] John Lyall and Eddie Baily the chief scout coming to St Andrew's and being in the office," he said. "John was a chain smoker so the office was full of smoke. I was 18 going on 19."They told me West Ham had made an offer, wanted to sign me, and would offer £650 a week. As soon as he said it, I thought 'I'm there' and then they told me they would pay me £50 per appearance. "John asked me what I thought and I said it was OK but inside I was all over the place. John told me I had five minutes to think about it and said: 'That's all you'll need'.Not a Hammers fan? Find and follow your club here"It was before mobile phones, so I went out to phone my missus at the time. The phone was engaged, and I went back in and said I'd love to sign for West Ham. "He asked me: 'But what do you know about West Ham?'"I said: 'I know you, Billy Bonds and I know the chicken run'."He had a smile on his face. I told him it was a horrible place to play for the opposition - it was brutal. When I was 17, I played there and it was really scary. You knew the fans could just reach out and grab you."John said: 'When you sign, trust me son, they'll love you'."That was the case. My relationship even now with the West Ham fans is unbelievable. They were the best fans in the world to me - they were incredible."Listen to the full episode on BBC Sounds

Bournemouth's perfect pre-season ended by Man Utd

Bournemouth suffered their first pre-season defeat in heavy rain and swirling wind, losing 4-1 to Manchester United in sides went into the match at Soldier Field with positive pre-season records, but Ruben Amorim's side took the convincing Semenyo had a goal ruled out for offside, with the Cherries' sole consolation coming through a Mattias de Ligt own goal in the 88th minute."The weather obviously had a big part in the game," Iraola said post-match. "It was the same for both teams, but especially in the first half the wind was against us and we were struggling to kick the ball around."It was the opposite in the second half and we didn't take that advantage, so I think they played much better than us and deserved the win."I think this game will probably serve us more than the other day [3-0 win over Everton] because we have made more mistakes and we have more things to correct."We struggled because we didn't have that collectiveness. Some players performed well but others did not, and they made everyone look worse. We need all of our players on the same page."Next, Andoni Iraola's side head to Atlanta next to face West Ham United in their final match of the tournament on Sunday, 3 August (19:00 BST).

Luke Littler fails his driving theory test for a FIFTH time as newly crowned World Matchplay champion reveals results of latest unsuccessful attempt

Luke Littler would be forgiven for believing the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency were behind a grand conspiracy to deny him the chance of driving his dream car - after failing his theory test for a fifth time. The newly crowned World Matchplay champion has been open with his followers on social media about his struggles to learn how to drive. On Wednesday, Littler revealed that he had again failed to make the grade on his theory test and as a result, will be forced to make another attempt to get his licence. In posting a score of 41 out of 50 in the multiple choice section of the exam, the Warrington native was two marks shy of the pass mark. While on the hazard perception section, he scored 44 out of 75 - the mark required to pass that section. Littler should take some heart from the fact that he was only two marks away from finally passing the test, even if his multiple choice score worsened by four points from the last time he sat the test. The 18-year-old accompanied an image of his result with the message: '5th time and counting...' The world champion has previously spoken about his love for the Mercedes A-Class Unfortunately for the darts sensation, the sub-par performance means he'll have to wait a little longer to get behind the wheel of his dream car. After becoming the youngest winner of the World Championship in January, Littler opened up on his love for the Mercedes A-Class. 'Last year I was looking at driving and I loved the Ford Focus, but now I've gone up in the world just a little,' he told reporters. 'I've always loved a Mercedes A-Class. Just a small car.' Littler is still basking in the glory of becoming the youngest player ever to complete darts' prestigious Triple Crown, after beating James Wade to clinch the World Matchplay title. The teenager secured £200,000 in prize money and even confirmed his relationship with his fun-loving beautician girlfriend Faith Millar. His haul was just the latest milestone in a year where he bagged £500,000 for the World Championship and earned in excess of £500,000 from Premier League success, propelling his career earnings to over £1.5 million.
