Yorkshire cowgirls prepare to face world's best
Eloisa (pictured in action) says barrel racing is not only "fun" but "scary" [Supplied]
"It's the adrenaline rush I love. It's the best", says Eloisa as she tacks up a pony called Peaches, before swinging into the saddle and trotting out from a barn into an arena dotted with metal barrels. As she and Peaches then set off at a gallop, kicking up dust as they go, the 14-year-old, in a wide-brimmed hat and jeans with a large silver-buckle belt, looks every inch the Wild West cowgirl - even though all this is taking place in the perhaps more mundane setting of Mirfield in West Yorkshire.
Moments before, a tractor had sprayed water onto the soft surface of the arena before the three large barrels were rolled into place, arranged into a cloverleaf pattern.

Now, Eloisa and Peaches expertly and skilfully swerve around each of those obstacles before charging for the exit.
The whole thing takes less than 20 seconds - and that is the aim of barrel racing: it is all about speed over style.
"When you first experience the speed, it is quite scary when you're going towards a wall and you've got to spin round a barrel, but it's so much fun," explains Eloisa.
It has taken a long time for barrel racing to get all the way to West Yorkshire.
In the 1940s, it was a mainstay of the US rodeo scene, as women and girls sought to give cowboys a run for their money in a traditionally male-dominated sport.

Nowadays, top barrel racers can earn thousands of dollars in prize money, and one of the biggest annual competitions is the National Barrel Horse Association Teen and Youth World Championships in Georgia.
It is that contest, taking place in July, for which Eloisa, as well as 18-year-old Anna Turner, from East Yorkshire, are now making their final preparations.

Sally Heron, who runs 4 Strides Equestrian UK in Lincolnshire, and who has put together the team including Eloisa and Anna, says the championships are "absolutely enormous".
Once they arrive in Georgia, the Yorkshire pair will pitted against the "best in the world", she says.

"There will be 2,500 youths and teens between the ages of 13 and 18, racing for the entire week," Sally explains.
"There'll be two arenas running, and they get through three every 60 seconds."
Sally says she discovered barrel racing while living and working in America and realising she "wanted to be a cowgirl".
"The Western way of training horses is very different to the English way," she says. "I love that way of training."
"I love the American lifestyle and the cheering and the clapping and the support, and the warm fuzz that goes with that," she adds.

Back in the UK, Sally now has her own barrel-racing business and she introduces other riders to the sport.
She says she is "now a fully-fledged cowgirl".
'Lot of effort'
For Anna, from Bridlington, it will be her second time competing at the event, and she knows it will be tough.
The last time she took part it was "unlike anything I've ever experienced", she says.
"The atmosphere's huge, and the crowd really gets behind you - and the louder the crowd cheers, the faster the horses run."
Although the sport is based purely on speed, many teams enjoy dressing up both riders and horses.

Anna says: "Bling is definitely part of it. We have our own team colours and dress up our horses.
"You can get breastplates, boots and saddle pads. It's all part of the fun.
"Including plaiting up, it can take up to an hour to get your horse ready.
"Some of the kids even put glitter on their pony. A lot of effort goes into it."
Anna Turner, 18, from Bridlington, says it will be her second time taking part in the championships in the USA [BBC]
Practice over for another day, Eloisa goes back to the barn for Peaches to be untacked and loaded into a van for the return home.
Peaches will not be going to the USA, with the team instead loaning ponies on which to compete.
On arrival in Georgia, there will be only one day for Eloisa and Anna to acclimatise to their new steeds.

However, while she may be nervous, Eloisa says she is most certainly looking forward to taking part in the championships.
For her, the excitement at being involved in such a fast-moving and spectacular sport is clear to see.
"You come off and your legs are shaking. It's exhilarating," she smiles.

Chelsea agree deal for Dortmund's Gittens
Jamie Gittens is set to join Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund (LLUIS GENE) Chelsea are set to add England under-21 international winger Jamie Gittens to their forward line after agreeing a deal with Borussia Dortmund, according to reports on Saturday. Sky Sports said an agreement has been reached between the clubs, who are both competing at the Club World Cup in the United States. Advertisement The Blues will reportedly pay up to 65 million euros (£55 million, $76 million) for the 20-year-old, who had been in Chelsea's academy as a youth player. Gittens eventually moved to Manchester City's academy before signing for Dortmund in 2022. He made 107 appearances for the German giants, scoring 17 goals, 12 of which came in the Bundesliga and Champions League last season. Chelsea were in the market to bolster their wide options after refusing the chance to sign Manchester United's Jadon Sancho on a permanent deal after his loan spell at Stamford Bridge. Mykhailo Mudryk also remains provisionally suspended by the English Football Association after failing a drugs test. Advertisement Gittens would be Chelsea's fourth signing of the summer, joining striker Liam Delap, midfielder Dario Essugo and defender Mamadou Sarr. Online critics didn't hold back with their opinions of his latest music, and some even suggested the Independence Day star might be having a 'mid-life crisis.' 'I think Will Smith is having a mid-life crisis. He's performing a new song in the middle of the street in LONDON. No energy, no response, Nada!' wrote one person on X. 'Will should have performed at Coachella.' Parade has reached out to Smith's reps for comment. In 'Pretty Girls,' Smith raps, 'It's a full house, better play your cards right / I'ma post your pic if you pose / Make one phone call, you in Vogue / Head, shoulders, knees, toes / Hold up, wait, pose.' He continues, 'I like BBLs / That stand for 'Bad b--ches link up' / Poppin in the club all night in the section / Picture perfect, I swear you perfection.' I'm guessing casting directors won't touch him with a 10 foot pole after the Oscar slap,' the X user said. 'Why a mid life crisis and not someone who is rich and can do what he wants?' one of his defenders added. Woman Accuses Her Husband of Being ‘Sleazy' After He Commented on Another Woman's Body — Others Think He Was Just Being Nice
A woman says her husband made a comment about another woman's body, and she thought it seemed 'sleazy' The woman shared the comment on a popular community site and asked other women if they would have also been 'offended' The post ultimately sparked much debate among the woman's fellow community membersA woman said she thinks her husband was being 'sleazy' about another woman's appearance — but is unsure if she's overreacting. The woman detailed her experience in the 'Am I Being Unreasonable?' forum on the U.K.-based community site a place where women can go to seek advice from other women about interpersonal dilemmas. In her post, the woman explained that she and her husband were recently in a store when they passed a woman in 'tight-fitting' pants, which the woman said were 'very flattering for her admittedly lovely backside.' The original poster (OP) then said that after she and her husband were out of earshot of the woman, her husband turned to her and asked if she could 'buy pants like that,' because he 'liked the view.' The OP went on to say that her husband knows she is 'self-conscious' about her weight and so 'wouldn't wear anything really tight.' 'I think he wasn't making an observation [about] her fashion choice, but was being sleazy about her appearance and made me feel bad in the process,' the OP continued. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. 'Would you have been offended at this, too?' she asked her fellow community members at the end of her post. Many of the woman's fellow community members said they thought she was overthinking the comment — and some even said they thought her husband was trying to compliment her. 'I'd take this as a compliment. Your husband saw a style of pants that he thought would look flattering on you and tried to prompt you [to get them]. Buy the pants, OP … You never know, you might love how you look in them and see something that your husband sees!' one person said. 'He's telling you he thinks you have a nice body and should show it off. He is telling you he doesn't see what you see in yourself,' added someone else. However, others thought that the woman's husband could have handled the situation with more tact. The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now! 'I think it was a rude thing for your [husband] to say. It's one thing to notice another woman's arse — it's quite another to chat to your wife about it,' someone said, adding, 'If he genuinely thinks those pants would suit you, there would be a more appropriate time to suggest them to you. In direct comparison with another woman is never going to make you feel nice.' Read the original article on People
