Ma'an launches Athar+ to empower social enterprises, non-profits in Abu Dhabi
ABU DHABI (WAM)In a significant step to advance community-driven change, the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma'an, the Abu Dhabi Government's official channel to receive social contributions, operating under the Department of Community Development, announces the launch of Athar+ (Athar Plus), Abu Dhabi's first purpose-driven hub dedicated to accelerating social impact.This launch comes as part of the 'From the Community to the Community' label, an initiative launched during the 'Year of Community' by the Authority, aimed at promoting community engagement.Athar+ brings together social enterprises, non-profits, and impact makers into one collaborative ecosystem for social entrepreneurship.Funded by community contributions, Athar+ is an initiative by the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma'an, designed to enable impact-driven organisations to thrive.The hub provides designated workspaces, expert mentorship, professional services, and tailored growth programmes—all aimed at helping social enterprises and non-profits scale their missions and deepen their impact across Abu Dhabi.Located at Madar_39, Athar+ serves as a catalyst for collaboration, entrepreneurship, and inclusion; offering a dedicated workspace for impact-driven organisations to develop solutions, share knowledge, and access the resources they need to build a more inclusive and resilient future.On this occasion, Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Chairman of the Department of Community Development, affirmed that the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma'an continues, throughout the 'Year of the Community,' to launch impactful initiatives and creating an enabling environment that supports the achievement of sustainable positive impact for Abu Dhabi's society.Dr. Al Khaili stated, 'The launch of Athar+ platform reflects the social sector's commitment to building an ecosystem that empowers third sector entities, including public benefit organisations and social enterprises—entities that have emerged from the community to serve the community. More than 150 third sector organisations are expected to benefit from this platform, offering unique services, programs, and initiatives to members of our society.'He added, 'We will spare no effort in strengthening Abu Dhabi's position as an enabling city for all institutions dedicated to serving the community and addressing social challenges with innovative and effective solutions.'Abdullah Humaid Al Ameri, Director-General, the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma'an, said, 'Athar+ comes as part of the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma'an's efforts to empower the third sector, promotes social entrepreneurship, and build a thriving ecosystem that enables this sector. The hub aims to accelerate the growth of non-profits, social enterprises and social initiatives through capacity-building, mentorship and fostering collaboration and networking opportunities. These efforts contribute to addressing social priorities in Abu Dhabi while building a more cohesive and inclusive community.'He also expressed his appreciation to the Abu Dhabi community members for their contributions to support this pioneering initiative, particularly commending Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank for its contribution, representing a model of effective collaboration between the public and private sectors in driving community-focused initiatives. He emphasised that such steadfast commitment serves as a cornerstone for achieving inclusive and sustainable development.With offerings such as capacity-building workshops, networking events, one-on-one advisory support, and flexible membership options, Athar+ reinforces the Authority's long-standing commitment to connecting the community and nurturing an active, empowered social sector.

Abu Dhabi Department of Energy organizes awareness sessions for gas system safety
Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE), in partnership with the Majalis Abu Dhabi at the Presidential Court, has organized a series of awareness briefings concerning safety procedures for gas systems inside buildings. These sessions took place during the first half of 2025 as part of the DoE's ongoing efforts to promote social awareness and consolidate public safety practices in the Emirate. This initiative is intended to spread best practices for the safe use of gas in both domestic and commercial environments, and to elevate the community's readiness for responding to emergencies. Such measures are instrumental in protecting lives and property and in raising safety levels throughout the different areas of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. There was broad community participation in the sessions, which took place in various community Majalis throughout Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra. Those present were provided with the opportunity to put forward their questions, provide their comments, and share their own experiences. A number of DoE officials and employees were in attendance, with the objective of developing initiatives that yield a sustainable socio-economic impact. The importance of direct outreach to residents and the use of community Majalis as essential platforms for enhancing constructive discussion and listening to the feedback and suggestions of society's members was affirmed by Eng. Ahmed Alsheebani, Petroleum Products Sector Executive Director at DoE. He noted that this approach supports the evolution of services delivered within this vital sector. Furthermore, Al Alsheebani indicated that the DoE maintains its cooperation with gas service suppliers for the purpose of updating systems and adopting latest practices, with the objective of mitigating risks related to gas use and reinforcing the overall safety ecosystem. Falling under the umbrella of the "Year of Community," this initiative is also a component of the DoE's efforts to reinforce effective communication with the public. It does so by engaging with different societal segments and capitalizing on the essential function of the Majalis in promoting awareness and reinforcing a culture of safety. Sessions were conducted at a number of community Majalis, namely: the Mohammed bin Zayed City Majlis, Khalifa City Majlis, Al Falah Majlis, Al Rahbah Majlis, and the Hilal Zaid Al-Shehhi Majlis, along with the Remaah Majlis, the Al Alia Majlis in Al Ain City, and the Al Sila Majlis in the Al Dhafra area. Al Dhaid Date Festival wraps up with record sales, visitor growth
Organised by the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), this year's edition attracted over 30,000 visitors—a 25% increase from the previous edition—generated more than AED 2 million in sales, and awarded 110 participants across various date competitions, solidifying the festival's reputation as one of the leading agricultural and trade events in the region. Closing ceremony honours contributors and partners During the closing ceremony, His Excellency Abdallah Sultan Al Owais, Chairman of SCCI, presented awards to competition winners and acknowledged key partners for their contributions. Honourees included H.E. Rashid Khalifa Al Mahyan, Chairman of the Parents Council for Male and Female Students in the Central Region, and Dr. Rashid Al Mazrouei, a heritage studies expert. Strong industry and community participation This year's festival saw wide participation from major date producers, palm farmers across the UAE, and over 15 agricultural companies showcasing sustainable farming technologies. AI-driven judging enhances transparency The Organising Committee introduced AI technology into the judging of the flagship 'Mazaiena Al Rutab' (Dates Beauty) contest. The system uses advanced analysis of date quality, size, and appearance, ensuring fair and efficient evaluations. Workshops equip farmers with modern skills A series of expert-led workshops and seminars offered training in best practices and emerging technologies for palm care, reinforcing the festival's role in both heritage preservation and agricultural advancement. Youth engagement through innovation and leadership The festival hosted an interactive youth session by the Sharjah Youth Council (SYC) in collaboration with the UAE Youth Entrepreneurship Council. Themed 'At the Heart of Sharjah Central Region.. Our Youth: Leadership and Growth,' the event launched the 'Innovate with Dates' competition for 2026, encouraging youth to develop creative, commercially viable products from dates. New youth council to represent Central Region During the session, SYC announced the formation of the "Central Region Youth Council," set to launch on International Youth Day, August 12.
