V S Achuthanandan: From the freedom struggle to free software, to bringing MGR and Ilaiyaraaja – he always thought of the people

Indian Express22-07-2025
Comrade V S Achuthanandan was a rare breed of leader: He rose from the ranks of Alleppey's coir workers to become the Chief Minister of Kerala. He attended only primary school, but with self-education, he became fully at ease with the English-educated. He was a mass agitator par excellence, but also proved to be one of the best administrators. Wherever he was, he never lost his link with the people. He was a man of the masses.
In the 1930s and 1940s, the industrial port town of Alleppey was a crucible for a generation of revolutionaries who fought caste discrimination, struggled for labour rights and threw themselves into the freedom struggle against the army of Travancore. The estimate is that around 500 workers were massacred in what has come to be known as the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising. V S Achuthanandan was one of the leaders of the pinnacle of the freedom movement in southern Kerala.
As with many other Alappuzha worker-leaders, it was P Krishna Pillai who identified the organiser in young Achuthanandan and deputed him to organise the agricultural workers in Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala. Since then, the story of the mobilisation of agricultural workers in Kerala has been intertwined with that of V S Achuthanandan. The struggle was not only for better wages but also against caste and for self-respect and dignity.
During the Punnapra-Vayalar armed uprising, V S was arrested and brutally tortured. His main contribution came during the post-insurrection period when he played a key role in resisting repression and rebuilding the movement. He rose rapidly in the party leadership and, as the district secretary, earned widespread admiration for winning nine out of 11 seats in the then-unbifurcated Kollam district in the 1957 legislative assembly election.
It was for the above reason that he was deputed to lead the election campaign in the prestigious by-election in Devikulam in 1958. The election campaign focused on new initiatives of the Communist government for the welfare of the plantation labourers, most of whom were migrants from Tamil Nadu. While Congress brought leaders and ministers from Tamil Nadu, V S stole the limelight by bringing M G Ramachandran (MGR) to campaign, making it the only time that MGR campaigned in Kerala elections. The musician Ilaiyaraaja was also a key player in the music troupe. The CPI candidate Rosamma Punnoose had a resounding victory.
In the inner party struggle during the early 1960s, V S was one of the 32 members who walked out of the CPI National Council, which led to the split in the Communist Party. Since then, he has been one of the foremost leaders of CPI(M), being state secretary for 12 years and a Politburo member for 24 years. He was a member of the legislative assembly for 35 years. Whether in power or outside, he always identified himself with the struggles of the poor for land, wages and livelihood. He could communicate with them easily and endeared himself to the masses.
There were two occasions for me to closely interact with and work with him. The first was during the People`s Plan Campaign when, after the demise of E M S Naboodiripad, he became the Chairman of its High-Power Guidance Council. Every month, we would undertake tours visiting panchayats, reviewing the work and learning from practice.
One incident that I remember specifically occurred during our visit to an IT co-operative setup by Ernakulam District Panchayat. V S closely listened to the enthusiastic narrative of a bunch of youngsters about the digital future and the importance of free software in the people's struggles against the monopolistic control of the IT industry. A decade later, as Chief Minister of Kerala, he would draw up an IT policy where free software figured importantly and set up the International Centre for Free and Open-Source Solutions (ICFOSS). The picture of his meeting with Richard Stallman is as iconic as the many images of him among the people leading the agitations.
The second occasion was when I worked as a member of his cabinet. I have watched with tremendous admiration his determined pursuit of some development projects. For example, he had a clear vision about the role the Vizhinjam port could play in Kerala`s development, and he tenaciously pursued the project against odds. Although delayed by a decade, the Vizhinjam deep water port has today become a reality.
Another occasion was my 2009 budget when I startled many by announcing an anti-recession package of Rs 5,000 crore, after the plan and budget accounts were finalised. I found the chief minister receptive to my explanations of Keynesian tactics. This rather audacious action, which was later favourably commented on by the RBI, could not have been carried out but for his support. He oversaw the expansion of social security measures and also the revival of public sector units and the revamping of public education and public health.
He was vocal about women's rights, and women constituted an important support base. He was uncompromising on corruption, and his dramatic campaign against encroachment of public land in Munnar raised a hornet's nest.
His last contribution to the state was the Administrative Reforms Commission Report. The focus of his recommendations was on simplifying administration and making it more citizen-friendly. Each department was meticulously examined, and detailed recommendations were listed.
V S Achuthanandan will always be remembered as one of the key architects of modern and egalitarian Kerala.

FIR against party leader over ‘A for Akhilesh, B for Babasaheb', Samajwadi Party chief hits back

After an FIR was filed against Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Farhad Alam Gada in Saharanpur district for allegedly teaching children a 'politicised' version of the English alphabet, SP national president Akhilesh Yadav accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of being 'anti-education.' Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has accused the BJP of bein g 'anti-education'. (HT FILE PHOTO) The complaint, filed by Main Singh of Kallarpur Gurjar village at Kotwali Dehat police station, alleged that Farhad Gada had been conducting informal lessons at a so-called 'PDA Pathshala' set up at his home in Ramnagar. The controversy erupted after a video of one such class surfaced on social media. In the footage, schoolchildren—wearing uniforms and reportedly from a private school—were seen being taught alternative alphabet associations such as: A for Akhilesh, B for Babasaheb (Ambedkar), D for Dimple (Yadav) and M for Mulayam Singh Yadav. The complaint also mentioned that comparing Babasaheb Dr BR Ambedkar to Akhilesh and Dimple was an insult to the Dalit icon. According to police officials, the content raised concerns of political indoctrination of minors, prompting the registration of a case under relevant sections, including Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita section 353(2) (statements conducing to public mischief) and section 3(2)(V) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Farhad Gada, who runs the PDA Pathshala—named after the SP's social justice plank 'Pichda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak' (Backward Classes, Dalits, Minorities) plank—defended the lessons. He claimed the goal was not merely to teach ABCs but to 'educate children about the great men of Samajwadi ideology' and foster political awareness from a young age. Gada also revealed his ambition to expand such schools throughout the district. Taking to the social media platform X, Akhilesh Yadav wrote, 'Even the British did not file an FIR for studying. The anti-education face of the BJP has now been exposed to the public.'

Election Commission Uses India's 6-Run Win Against England To Encourage Voting

Thirteen months ago, when India beat South Africa in the final of the ICC World T20, Mohammad Siraj, in an after-match interview, said: "I only believe in Jassi bhai". On Monday, when he walked onto The Oval, England needed 35 runs to win, and they had four wickets in hand. Siraj, who didn't play that final against the Proteas in June 2024, didn't have Jasprit Bumrah with him today. And he told himself: "Believe in yourself." He picked up a fifer and India beat England by six runs to win the fifth and final Test of the series. What looked like a sure-shot English victory on day four turned into a dramatic collapse as Siraj led India to one of the most thrilling comebacks in recent memory. With this win, India levelled the five-match series 2-2, capping off an unforgettable contest. And much like the fans, the Election Commission has tapped into the excitement surrounding the win to promote democratic participation, comparing the win to voting. "Team India wins the 5th Test by just 6 runs! Edge-of-the-seat stuff, because every run is a game-changer. In a democracy, every vote counts just as much. Every eligible elector must enrol in the electoral roll!" they wrote on X. ???? Team India wins the 5th Test by just 6 runs! Edge-of-the-seat stuff, because every run is a game-changer. In a democracy, every vote counts just as much. ✅ Every Eligible Elector must Enroll in the Electoral Roll! ???? @BCCI #INDvsENGTest #OvalTest #TeamIndia #SIR #Bihar — Election Commission of India (@ECISVEEP) August 4, 2025 Enrolling in the electoral roll means registering yourself as a voter in the country's official list of eligible voters. The Commission's message comes as it carries out a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar, ahead of state assembly elections due later this year. The drive, which saw a 99.8 per cent participation, collected around 7.24 crore registration forms. The revision led to the removal of approximately 65.6 lakh names from the rolls, mainly classified as dead, duplicate, migrated, or untraceable, leaving 7.24 crore electors in the draft list released on August 1. Opposition parties have slammed the exclusion of Aadhaar, Voter ID (EPIC), and ration cards as valid documents in the voter roll revision process. The Supreme Court is currently hearing the case and has warned it will intervene if it detects large-scale removal of eligible voters. Earlier, the Court directed the Election Commission to accept these commonly used IDs during the SIR. Coming back to the match, the fifth Test match delivered high drama as England, chasing a formidable target of 374, were in cruise control mode. With tons from Joe Root and Harry Brook, the hosts crossed the 300-run mark and seemed well on course for a memorable win. A stunning reversal followed. Mohammed Siraj delivered a fiery spell, tightening the screws when it mattered most. England's batting order crumbled under pressure, losing their last seven wickets for only 66 runs. Finishing the match, India bowled them out for 367, securing victory by a razor-thin margin of six runs, their narrowest in red ball cricket. AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi also celebrated Mohammed Siraj's stellar performance with a tweet in Hyderabadi slang, " Poora khol diye Pasha," meaning Siraj was at his absolute best. The fast bowler, who took 23 wickets in the five-match series and five in the final innings, was named Man of the Match.

Donald Trump calls Taylor Swift 'no longer hot' while praising Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle ad

Taylor Swift Dragged into Sydney Sweeney Ad Drama as Trump Says She's Not 'Hot' Anymore. (Image-X) You'd think a jeans commercial wouldn't be political warfare, but here we are. What started as a cheeky American Eagle campaign featuring Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney has spiraled into an unexpected culture war with Taylor Swift caught in the crossfire. The moment the words 'great jeans' turned into a thinly veiled pun about genetics, the internet exploded. And then came Donald Trump , calling Sweeney 'hot,' dragging Taylor as 'no longer hot,' and turning what should've been a harmless denim moment into a full-on GOP-vs-Swift spectacle. Trump calls Sydney Sweeney 'hot' and Taylor Swift 'no longer hot' for the American Eagle ad drama American Eagle's new campaign featuring Sydney Sweeney was all about wordplay: 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,' with the word genes crossed out in classic handwritten rebel font. But what was meant to be flirty and fun got dragged on social media for echoing eugenic undertones. Critics online pointed out how the ad seemed to elevate a very specific standard of beauty, white, blonde, blue-eyed and combined with genetics talk, things got uncomfortable real fast. Then Donald Trump got involved, and chaos officially began. After finding out Sydney is a registered Republican, Trump went straight to Truth Social and posted: 'Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the HOTTEST ad out there. It's for American Eagle, and the jeans are flying off the shelves. Go get 'em Sydney!' He followed it up with, 'Being WOKE is for losers. Being Republican is what you want to be.' He even took the opportunity to bash Jaguar or any company that doesn't align with his vibe. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bo Derek's Probably The Most Gorgeous 68-Year-Old. Paperela Undo But the most unexpected moment? Trump deciding to take a swipe at Taylor Swift out of nowhere. Trump randomly veered into pop star territory, taking a direct shot at Swift's popularity. He said: 'She was booed out of the Super Bowl and became NO LONGER HOT .' Cue the record scratch. The attack felt wildly out of place, especially since Taylor had nothing to do with the jeans ad but that didn't stop Trump from making it political. With Swift being vocal about progressive causes and her support for Biden, it's clear she's the go-to 'woke celeb' target for conservative outrage. So when Sweeney got the Republican stamp of approval, Swift naturally got the backhanded burn. This isn't the first time Trump's taken jabs at Taylor, but calling her 'no longer hot' while praising Sweeney as the new conservative darling? That's petty on a whole new level. American Eagle's stock soared nearly 24%, because of course controversy sells. Right-wing pundits like Megyn Kelly and Ted Cruz jumped in to praise Sweeney's 'anti-woke energy,' while left-leaning critics continued dragging the brand for 'objectifying' women and playing with dangerous cultural symbolism.
