‘Lawlessness': Hundreds of juveniles cause chaos in Mayfield Heights after church festival

According to the Mayfield Heights Police Department, the incident began at about 7 p.m. when the Saint Francis of Assisi Family Festival reached capacity and organizers requested assistance with hundreds of teens still trying to enter.

Multiple fights broke out between 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., police said.
Officers pursued two males who were suspected to be armed. One suspect was apprehended and is facing criminal charges.
According to police, the festival was shut down 30 minutes early as tensions escalated.
An estimated 300 to 400 youths then crossed into Mayfield Heights, where residents soon began reporting trespassing and disturbances, police said.

Police said the group gathered near Eastgate Plaza, where they vandalized businesses and stole items.
Officers from multiple jurisdictions, including Lyndhurst, Highland Heights, Mayfield Village and the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office, joined Mayfield Heights police in responding to the chaos.
About a dozen businesses were advised to temporarily lock their doors. In one case, officers deployed pepper balls to break up a confrontation involving physical violence.
'It took 35 to 40 officers nearly three hours to bring the situation under control,' Mayfield Heights Police Chief Anthony Mele is quoted in a press release.

Dozens of juveniles were arrested. No serious injuries were reported.
City leaders and church organizers plan to meet in the coming weeks to review the events and discuss changes for future festivals.
'We have a responsibility to our residents, businesses and public safety personnel to ensure that such lawlessness is not repeated,' Mele said.

I-Team: Investigation underway after fleeing suspect struck by Butler employee
(WJW) — The FOX 8 I-Team has learned more after a wanted man, who was running from a Butler police officer, was struck by a vehicle driven by a village employee. The incident happened at about 7 p.m. on July 11. Swimmers warned to stay out of Lake Erie on Thursday The wanted man, Anthony Ward, was in a vehicle with his grandmother and another woman just moments before the incident took place. His grandmother told a 911 dispatcher that she pulled over because a red vehicle was following her. Moments after she stopped her vehicle, a Butler Village police officer came up to the car and her grandson took off running, she said. Security video obtained by the I-Team shows Ward running and a red car following him and striking him. 'They ran over him twice and trying to tell me that can be that way,' the grandmother told the dispatcher. The grandmother asked for the Richland County Sheriff's Office to send a deputy to the scene but the dispatcher said police were already on scene. 'Yes, but they are the ones that ran over him,' the woman told the dispatcher. According to officials, the person driving the red vehicle is an employee of the village of Butler. Bellville Police are investigating the incident. Dispatch records state Ward was injured. The records state he suffered 'traumatic injuries' and that he may have a broken leg. According to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction website, he was wanted by the Adult Parole Authority when officers tried to arrest him on Friday. Texas woman accused of planning to send fentanyl-laced chocolates to ex-husband
COLEMAN, Texas (WJW) — A Texas woman is facing charges after authorities say she plotted to kill her ex-husband by sending him a box of chocolates laced with fentanyl. The Parker County Sheriff's Office initiated their investigation after a source alleged that 63-year-old Pamela Jean Stanley had wanted to kill her ex-husband, who had recently become engaged. Suspect arrested after 'American Idol' executive, her husband shot to death: Police Investigators said Stanley was recorded saying she wanted to buy and 'inject' fentanyl into a box of chocolates and send it to her ex. She also planned to make the chocolates appear as if they were a 'congratulatory gift' from a travel company, along with a honeymoon promotion, the sheriff's office said. Undercover agents with the office's Special Crimes Unit convinced Stanley to meet them to buy fentanyl in the parking lot of a motel in Coleman, Texas, the sheriff's office said. They took her into custody after the operation. Upon arrest, Stanley was also found to be in possession of 9.5 grams of methamphetamine. Stanley has since been indicted for 'criminal solicitation with intent to commit murder, criminal attempt to commit murder, and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver,' according to the sheriff's office.

Northeast Ohio Dachshund Picnic returns full of cute pups
KENT, Ohio (WJW) – It's an annual celebration that has really gone to the dogs; the Northeast Ohio Dachshund Picnic returned Saturday with more than 300 dogs in attendance. The annual celebration of adorable wiener dogs always draws a huge crowd to Fred Fuller Park in Kent, and the 27th year was no exception. Cleveland Browns rookie RB Quinshon Judkins arrested in Florida, records show This annual gathering of dachshunds started as a small gathering of friends in a backyard nearly 30 years ago. It has now grown into one of the largest dachshund events in Ohio, with about 550 people and 350 dogs in attendance. This year's annual picnic collected bags of dry dog food to donate to the Portage County dog warden, it also raises awareness for dachshund rescue, with several organizations giving out information. At the event, there were vendors selling dachshund items for people and pets alike.
