At least 2 dead, suspect arrested after Nevada casino shooting
The gunman who opened fire just outside the Grand Sierra Resort casino shot multiple people before being taken into custody, police said.
The conditions of the victims were not immediately known, said Reno police spokesperson Chris Johnson. The gunman was being treated at a hospital, Johnson said.
Caroline Ackerman, a spokesperson for Renown Regional Medical Center, said the hospital's emergency department received several patients with gunshot wounds.

The shooting was reported around 7:30 a.m. Monday outside in the valet area, Johnson said. A spokesperson with the Washoe County Sheriff's Department said an officer was involved in the shooting.

More than a year ago, two men were charged with fatally shooting another man who was staying at the resort in January 2024.
Reno police on Monday warned residents to stay out of the area. Multiple emergency vehicles, including several ambulances, responded outside the casino.
The Grand Sierra claims to have the biggest casino floor in northern Nevada and sits just a few blocks from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. It's also one of the tallest buildings in the city, with nearly 2,000 hotel rooms.
Last fall, President Donald Trump held a campaign rally in the resort's main ballroom.
'My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and our entire community. Reno is strong — but we are not immune to the epidemic of gun violence gripping this nation,' city council member Devon Reese said in a social media post.

A police dog is recovering after being cut with a knife during an arrest in Surrey, B.C., on Monday. The Surrey Police Service said the incident happened as officers were responding to reports of two people stealing from a vehicle. Prosecutors have yet to approve charges against either suspect.

Police seek man seen kicking, punching his dog in Nanaimo
Nanaimo RCMP is hoping the public can help them identify a man who a witness reported seeing abusing his dog. On July 27 at 6:30 p.m., in the 200 block of Selby Road, a witness told RCMP that they saw a man punch and kick his German Shepherd. The witness told the police that they called out to the man, telling him to stop and the man then came toward the witness 'aggressively,' asking to see their phone as he thought the witness was recording him. The witness did take a photo of the man and his dog and described the man as about five-feet-11-inches tall and 175 pounds, with tanned skin, dark hair in a ponytail, a moustache and closely-groomed beard. Story continues below advertisement He was riding and then walking with a skateboard and at the time was wearing a white and dark baseball hat, a dark T-shirt and knee-length light-coloured shorts. The dog appears to be a German Shepherd cross, black, tan, and white, with a white-tipped tail, according to what the witness told RCMP. The police are asking that anyone with information about the man or the dog call Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line (250)754-2345 and reference file 25-23755.

Convicted killer Shawn Merrick is up for parole, prompting concerns from his victim's family. Shelley Devoe was just 42 years old when she was murdered by Shawn Merrick. Her body was discovered on Burke Mountain in Coquitlam in 2006. Merrick shot Devoe, believing she had stolen some cocaine. Later, he was sentenced to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 10 years. 'She was absolutely gorgeous and beautiful,' Devoe's daughter Melinda Russell told Global News. Devoe's daughter is deeply concerned. 'I've looked at the progress reports that Corrections Canada has sent me, and personally, I don't see any significant progress there on the inmate's part or any significant interventions that might say this fella is better,' Russell said. Shawn Merrick's parole hearing is scheduled to begin on Wednesday.
