Egypt, Qatar explore deepened energy ties, joint investment opportunities
The visit aligns with Egypt's broader strategy to strengthen energy security, particularly in meeting domestic demand for petroleum products and natural gas during peak consumption periods such as the summer. The Egyptian Ministry is pursuing a dual-track approach: ramping up domestic production through increased exploration and drilling, while leveraging the country's strategic geographic location to foster regional collaboration and infrastructure optimization.
During high-level meetings in Doha, Badawi and Al-Kaabi discussed accelerating the launch of joint natural gas projects and finalizing long-term supply agreements to support Egypt's local energy needs. They also examined opportunities to integrate energy infrastructure between the two nations, capitalizing on their combined capabilities in liquefied natural gas (LNG) production, liquefaction, and regasification.
Talks further focused on strengthening collaboration in upstream activities, particularly in Qatari-operated concession areas in Egypt. QatarEnergy—an active participant in Egypt's Upstream Gateway (EUG)—is already involved in several offshore Mediterranean projects alongside ExxonMobil, including the Nefertari, Cairo, Masry, and North Marakia wells.
Al-Kaabi reaffirmed QatarEnergy's interest in expanding its footprint in Egypt's energy sector. This commitment was recently demonstrated through an agreement with EGAS and Chevron, granting QatarEnergy a stake in the North Dabaa offshore concession.
Minister Badawi presented a range of investment opportunities in Egypt's oil, gas, and petrochemical industries, encouraging Qatari entities to explore value-added ventures. He also proposed expanding the role of Egyptian companies in Qatar's energy sector, especially firms with expertise in engineering, project execution, operations, and maintenance. Both sides expressed interest in facilitating Egyptian participation in Qatar's infrastructure, hydrocarbons, and renewable energy projects.
The ministers also reviewed prospects for broader regional cooperation within the framework of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), where both Egypt and Qatar are key members. Discussions emphasized the importance of aligning policy positions and leveraging GECF membership to support national and regional energy objectives.
Headquartered in Doha, the GECF represents a powerful bloc in the global gas market, with member states collectively holding about 70% of the world's proven natural gas reserves.

IMF to complete 5th, 6th reviews of Egypt loan programme in September - Economy
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has announced that it will complete the fifth and sixth reviews of Egypt's Extended Fund Facility (EFF) programme by September, citing the need for more time to finalize key policy measures, according to Julie Kozack, the director of the IMF's Communications Department. The key measures to be finalized include those related to reducing the state's role in the economy and enhancing private sector participation, Kozack clarified. Once the fifth and sixth reviews are completed in September, Egypt will be eligible to receive two tranches, worth $2.4 billion, out of the total $8 billion loan. Kozack made these remarks on Thursday during a hybrid press briefing when asked by Ahram Online about the possible outcomes of Monday's meeting. The decision follows a recent IMF mission visit to Cairo, from 6 to 18 May, during which discussions with Egyptian authorities were described as productive. However, Kozack affirmed that more work is needed to ensure the programme's core objectives are met. 'The discussions suggest that more time is needed to finalize key policy measures, particularly related to the state's role in the economy,' Kozack said during the press briefing. 'For that reason, the fifth and sixth reviews under the EFF will be combined and discussed together in the fall,' she added. Moreover, Kozack asserted that Egypt has made notable progress, including a decline in inflation and an increase in foreign exchange reserves. However, she emphasized the importance of deepening structural reforms to safeguard macroeconomic stability and strengthen the country's resilience to external shocks. Central to those reforms are the advancement of the state ownership policy and the asset diversification programme, key elements that aim to reduce the state's economic footprint and create space for private-sector-led growth. 'These steps are critical to leveling the playing field and improving the business environment,' she noted. Kozack further affirmed the IMF's strong commitment to Egypt's economic reform agenda. She clarified that discussions are ongoing regarding the country's financing needs and the potential size of the disbursement under the combined review, saying it would be premature to speculate on the final figures at this stage. Additionally, she stated that the first review of the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) financing, which was approved earlier this year, will be aligned with the sixth review of the EFF programme. The IMF's EFF arrangement with Egypt was initially approved in December 2022 and expanded in 2024 to a total of $8 billion. The programme aims to restore macroeconomic stability, advance structural reforms, and enhance social protection in the face of external economic pressures. Egypt affirms support for Somalia stability at AU Peace, Security Council session - Foreign Affairs
Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty affirmed Egypt's firm support for Somalia's security, stability, unity, and territorial integrity, praising the Somali government's efforts to enhance governance and strengthen state institutions. FM Abdelatty made these remarks during a virtual session of the African Union Peace and Security Council, held at the ministerial level to follow up on developments in Somalia. The session tackled updates regarding the transition process from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). During the session, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's solidarity with the Somali government and people, aiming to bolster the capacities of Somalia's national institutions and facilitate the gradual handover of security responsibilities to Somali security forces. He also expressed Egypt's concern over the ongoing security challenges posed by terrorist groups, foremost among which is Al-Shabaab. Moreover, FM Abdelatty emphasized the importance of ensuring a smooth and coordinated transition from ATMIS to AUSSOM to preserve the security gains achieved and prevent the exploitation of security gaps. He further asserted the need to provide sustainable funding for AUSSOM to enable it to fulfil its mandate efficiently, warning that the lack of funding would undermine the mission's ability to perform its duties. This, in turn, would negatively impact the entire Horn of Africa region and the international community, including disrupting global maritime trade and increasing terrorist threats, Abdelatty noted. "Egypt is committed to supporting Somalia, both bilaterally and multilaterally, through capacity-building programmes, personnel training, supporting security and civilian institutions, and humanitarian assistance," he concluded. Similarly, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly addressed Somalia's security challenges during his speech at the AUSSOM summit hosted by Entebbe, Uganda, last April. "The international community's shifting of priorities in 2024 allowed the Al-Shabaab militant group to regain strength and undermined hard-won gains made by the Somali National Army in 2022 and 2023," Madbouly said during the summit. Madbouly, participating in the event on behalf of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, reiterated Egypt's unwavering support for Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's vision of establishing a unified and prosperous state. He stressed the importance of providing Somalia with the necessary resources under AUSSOM to empower the Somali National Army to safeguard its substantial gains on the ground. Egyptian & French FMs Discuss Bilateral Ties, Regional Stability
H-Tayea Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a telephone conversation on Thursday with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot to discuss key regional developments and ways to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two nations. According to Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ambassador Tamim Khalaf, both ministers reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing all aspects of bilateral relations and elevating cooperation to new levels, in line with the strong strategic ties between Egypt and France. During the call, Minister Abdelatty briefed his French counterpart on the latest developments in the Gaza Strip, including Egypt's efforts to revive and sustain the ceasefire, ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid, and stabilize the situation. He also highlighted Egypt's intention to host an international conference on early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza, contingent on the maintenance of the ceasefire.
