Pupils from Glasgow school take part in mock trial
The session, held in the newly opened moot courtroom within the Paisley campus, was designed to give the youngsters a taste of what it's like to study law at university and practice it in real-world settings.

Professor Kasim Sheikh, dean of the School of Business and Creative Industries, commended the pupils' enthusiasm and potential.
He said: "It was inspiring to see such insight, courage, and promise from these pupils as they stepped into the courtroom.
"Events like this are about more than just learning how the legal system works; they're about helping young people see themselves in professional roles and giving them the confidence to take that next step."
During the event, pupils were given roles as prosecutors, defence lawyers, witnesses, and jurors, and brought their arguments to life in UWS's purpose-built courtroom facility.
The trial was overseen by a judicial bench of two: Isabella Ennis KC of the Faculty of Advocates, and Jeremy O'Neill, procurator fiscal depute, who jointly presided in the role of sheriffs during the proceedings.
Both legal professionals gave a career and legal pathways talk after the verdict, designed to offer pupils insight into routes into the profession and life in the courtroom.
The event also introduced pupils to UWS's new LLB (Hons) Scots Law degree.
Developed in consultation with the Law Society of Scotland, this programme offers a professionally accredited pathway to becoming a solicitor.
It is designed to provide students with both the academic foundations and hands-on courtroom experience required for a successful career in the legal profession.

Isabella Ennis KC said: "I was genuinely impressed by the level of preparation and passion these young people brought to the courtroom.
"From their structured legal arguments to their confident delivery, they demonstrated real potential.
"With this new moot courtroom and the new LLB in Scots Law, UWS has created a space that makes the study and practice of law accessible, inspiring, and inclusive."
Professor Sheikh added: "Through our new LLB in Scots Law launching in September and our investment in learning, UWS is opening doors and nurturing the legal professionals of tomorrow."
UWS has hosted annual mock court events since 2022, adapting and drawing inspiration from MiniTrial materials, with the generous support of the Faculty of Advocates.

Paddleboard tragedy teen's school to celebrate his life on last day of term
Auchmuty High School has said the day will allow students and staff to "share stories, laugh, cry and support each other". The school attended by a Scots teenager who tragically drowned while paddleboarding is to honour him on the last day of term. Alexander McNab, 15, was reported missing from the water at Lochore Meadows in Fife on Saturday, June 28. A major search effort began and tragically his body was recovered on Sunday afternoon at around 1.20pm. He was a pupil at Auchmuty High School in Glenrothes, which has announced it will use the day to remember him as the school year ends on Thursday, July 3. Students and staff have been invited to wear pink to celebrate his life, with a book of remembrance set up for anybody from the school community to leave a tribute. A post on social media said the day will include opportunities for people to "remember Alex, share stories, laugh, cry and support each other". It added: "Our thoughts, prayers and support remain with his family." On Monday, Alexander's family shared a statement via Police Scotland in memory of their "much-loved son". In it, they said: ' Alexander was much loved, caring, adventurous, bold, hard-working, ambitious and always looking out and caring for others. 'He is a much-loved son, brother, grandson, cousin, friend and boyfriend and a big part of his local community. 'Alexander will be forever missed by those that knew him and loved him. Detective Sergeant Duncan Thompson said: 'Our thoughts are very much with Alexander's family at this very distressing time and we have specialist officers supporting them.' A major search was launched to find the schoolboy at around 5.25pm on Saturday after emergency crews received a report of concern for a boy who had been out on the water. Police Scotland, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, the Scottish Ambulance Service and HM Coastguard were in attendance to carry out extensive searches. Since the tragic news of his death broke, a fundraising page has been set up to raise funds for his mum to help with funeral costs. It has since raised over £24,000 as of July 2.

Heartbroken family of man who drowned in rock pool issue warning for beachgoers
Łukasz Kasperczyk was just 32 years-old when he drowned at Dunbar Harbour. He was enjoying a day out with his friends before events took a tragic turn. The family of a young man who tragically drowned in a rock pool at a Scots beach have issued a warning to beachgoers as they mark eight years since his death. Łukasz Kasperczyk was just 32 years-old when he died at Dunbar Harbour in a catastrophic accident on June 30, 2017. The fisherman originally from Poland was enjoying a day out with friends at Dunbar Harbour when he stumbled over some rocks smashing his head and drowning in a small pool of water. Sadly he was pronounced dead at the scene leaving behind his girlfriend, son, sister, dad and five nieces. His niece, Ewelina Wybraniec who was just 16 when the tragedy occurred has spoken out as summer approaches and people flock to seasides across Scotland. The now 24-year-old told Edinburgh Live: "He was an amazing guy and he was always there for my mum. We were so close - he was the only man in my life. "A group of friends had organised a fishing trip at Dunbar harbour. It was around 4pm and my uncle was pronounced dead at 5.30pm. "He left the car while they were unpacking things because he wanted to look at the rocks. They don't know what happened, there was nobody there. "Apparently he fainted because my uncle fell straight onto his face - his cause of death was drowning." "He fell face first in a small body of water. The puddles have such a small amount of water so it's really bizarre thinking about how he drowned in that. It was a horrible accident, it took five minutes and he was gone." "He loved the outdoors and fishing, so he would have known it was dangerous. I just don't understand why he would even attempt to climb the rocks. "It's so important to think about the safety of being near the water. Nobody realises how dangerous it is out there on the rocks, one wrong move and something drastic can happen. Water Safety Scotland revealed last month that men, particularly those aged 20 to 29, are at a higher risk of drowning compared to other groups. According to fresh data from the Water IncidentDatabase (WAID), men accounted for 82 per cent of all accidental water-related deaths in Scotland in 2024. Community Safety Minister Siobhain Brown said: 'My thoughts and sympathies are with the families and friends who have lost a loved one in a drowning accident. "I encourage everyone to protect themselves and others when in and around the water and to be aware that water temperature can vary drastically, as can currents and tides. "It's well worth learning the Water Safety Code and using the resources of Water Safety Scotland so people can stay safe and prevent accidents in our waters. Amazon Prime Day shoppers urged to stay alert as fraudsters use AI to craft convincing scams
Advice Direct Scotland says criminals are exploiting artificial intelligence to create realistic phishing emails and automated calls that make it harder to spot fraud. Lanarkshire shoppers are being urged to stay alert ahead of Amazon Prime Day as fraudsters use artificial intelligence to craft increasingly convincing scams. Advice Direct Scotland, which runs the national consumer advice service says criminals are exploiting AI to create realistic phishing emails and automated calls that make it harder to spot fraud. With Amazon Prime Day running from July 8-11, the charity warns scammers will target bargain hunters looking for deals during the ongoing cost of living crisis. Its advisers have recently handled cases including fake messages about Prime membership renewals, bogus refund offers, and calls claiming Amazon accounts have been hacked. The warning comes after Advice Direct Scotland revealed that Scots have lost at least £860,000 to cyber criminals in the past year amid a tenfold surge in online scams. Hazel Knowles, senior project lead for Advice Direct Scotland, said: 'With households across Scotland still facing huge financial pressures because of the cost of living and energy crises, it is understandable that people will be hunting for genuine Prime Day deals. 'But criminals are also looking for opportunities and now they have AI to help them sound more believable than ever. It can be easy to get caught out, especially if a call or email seems urgent and official. "But the best advice is to take a moment, trust your instincts, and check before you buy or click. 'Amazon will never ask for remote access to your device or for payment details over the phone or email. "If something feels suspicious, it probably is, and our expert team is here to help if you are unsure. "Anyone who is caught out by a scam or spots a suspected scam should report it using our free ScamWatch tool at Scammers often claim shoppers have ordered expensive items like iPhones and demand personal or banking details to cancel payments. Others use robocalls warning that Prime membership will renew at a discounted rate unless a button is pressed immediately. Fraudsters also try to trick people into downloading software that gives them remote access to devices, exposing bank details. Advice Direct Scotland stresses that Amazon will never call to ask for remote access or to install apps. If you receive suspicious calls, texts, or emails asking for personal information or payments, do not respond. The charity advises people to stay vigilant and, if a call appears suspicious or raises concern, to hang up immediately and contact your bank or card issuer directly.
