BBC News27-03-2025
Middlesbrough's injury crisis in central defence is showing signs of easing ahead of their game with Oxford United on Saturday. Rav van den Berg is back in training after a knee injury, although head coach Michael Carrick will still have to make a call on him before the game. George Edmundson could return to training next week but Dael Fry's return from a calf injury is a little further away.In the absence of these three and longer-term absentee Darragh Lenihan, left-back Neto Borges and midfielder Jonny Howson have played together at centre-half in the last two games."Rav has trained with us in a small capacity so far this week," Carrick told BBC Look North."He's made a good step. It's a bit of a step for Saturday, but we'll see."
Australia midfielder Riley McGree is also back in training as he recovers from an injury that has kept him out since 11 January, an absence of 12 games.Boro sit eighth as the Championship resumes after the international break, three points outside the play-off spots.

Liverpool youngster rated highly by Arne Slot closes in on new long-term deal - after making last impression on Reds boss

Liverpool youngster James McConnell is close to signing a new long-term deal at the club and going out on loan for the season. The 20-year-old midfielder, who played several times for the first team last year and made a lasting impression on boss Arne Slot, is missing from the pre-season tour of Asia with a minor injury. It is understood that the pain is just a knock suffered in training and he will have treatment on it this week — with the decision made not to travel to Hong Kong or Japan due to the fact the flight could exacerbate symptoms. He should be fine again in around a week. McConnell has interest from Ipswich, West Brom and Derby in the Championship for a loan deal, while German Bundesliga clubs have also posted their desire to sign him. Some of those teams have proposed an option to buy clause in the deal but Liverpool are believed to not want to sell McConnell as Slot is a big fan. In January, the Dutch manager blocked McConnell's exit as he saw him as part of his plans after shining in a Champions League game away at PSV Eindhoven. The Reds have reached an agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt over the signing of Hugo Ekitike McConnell joined the club from Sunderland as a teenager and has played as a No 6 since breaking into the first-team picture. Meanwhile, Liverpool have struck a deal to sign highly-rated striker Hugo Ekitike in a deal worth up to £79million. The Reds had been locked in negotiations with the German side after poaching Newcastle's top target. Ekitike only wanted Liverpool and is set to complete a medical in the coming days. The package is a £69m base fee plus £10m in add-ons which are based on team and player performance. The Frenchman has joined on a six-year deal and he will undergo his medical on Tuesday.

It's never quiet at Ewood Park

"I'm going to have a quiet summer..." The famous last words I uttered whilst wiping away tears as yet another play-off dream came to an end at Bramall Lane back in May. But I've been a Rovers fan long enough to know there isn't such a thing as a quiet day, never mind a quiet days of the season ending came the decision from the club to withdraw the women's team from the Championship and relegate themselves to National League Division One North (tier four). Then came the announcement in a 35-word statement that CEO of seven years, Steve Waggott, had left the club. It's a position that remains had leaked kits (the green third kit is a thing of beauty!) season ticket price debates and rumours aplenty about who is leaving and who is coming through the the XI which started the last game of the season, Danny Batth has been reunited with our old gaffer at Derby and Tyrhys Dolan is now a free agent as he continues the hunt for his big incomings of De Neve, Taveres, Alebiosu and McLoughlin offer reassurance business is being done early for a change and some funds are available. However we definitely need more, a stance on which Valerien Ismael seems to agree. With Andi Weimann also making a move to the Rams, his nine goals last season will be down our key players is something we have historically failed to do and remains at the forefront of many of our minds. With rumours swirling of Callum Brittain going to Middlesbrough, the club must decide whether to cash in if a new deal is not accepted or allow players to run their contracts the pitch, wins against Accrington Stanley and Everton (see photo) in our first two pre-season friendlies have offered us a chance to see the new lads in action. We have also seen the return of Scott Wharton, a fan favourite, after an extensive squad - and many Rovers fans - are now in Spain for some warm weather training. For the boys, it is friendlies against Qatar SC and Elche. For the fans, it is a chance for some sun, sea, and shenanigans. Wrexham set medical for free agent who Steven Gerrard tore to shreds over Zoom call

Wrexham are close to signing a player once heavily scolded by Steven Gerrard during his time in charge of Rangers as they look to boost their squad for the Championship Wrexham are on the verge of signing a player who was torn apart by Steven Gerrard during a frank Zoom call. Josh Windass is expected to have a medical on Monday ahead of joining the Red Dragons as a free agent after leaving Sheffield Wednesday last week. ‌ The attacker, son of Hull City legend Dean Windass, departed the Owls by mutual agreement, with the club currently under scrutiny after repeatedly failing to pay players' wages on time. He was one of Wednesday's star performers in the Championship last season, scoring 13 goals and registering five assists. ‌ The 31-year-old has attracted interest from several teams this summer, including his former club Rangers. However, Wrexham, owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are reported by the BBC to have won the battle to secure his services ahead of their first season in the second tier for 43 years. ‌ Windass previously spent two years at Rangers after first joining in the summer of 2016, scoring 19 goals in 73 appearances. But he left to sign for Wigan Athletic on transfer deadline day in August 2018 in a deal worth around £2.5m. Speaking on the Open Goal podcast in May this year, Windass revealed how he jumped in his car and headed south with barely a second thought after learning of Wigan's interest from Rangers' then-manager Gerrard. But he said he ended up regretting the decision and later received a dressing down from the Liverpool legend over the manner of his departure. "It was a bad decision but I just went straight down the motorway," Windass said. "I don't know (why). I just followed my gut at that moment in time and then a week later (I regretted it). "We had a Zoom call about six months later because I was going to go back on loan in January and Paul Cook wouldn't let me go. Then Gerrard basically gave me what for on the Zoom call. "He told me everything that was wrong with me and what I did and how I can improve as a person. He said, 'If we're going to bring you back we need to have an honest conversation,' and I never went back anyway. That was it. It was a bad couple of weeks." ‌ Highlighting how quickly he realised his error, he added: "(I knew I'd made the wrong decision) after my first training session. Mick Beale was texting me saying, 'You're making a big mistake'. I was 23. I was stupid. I just wanted a bigger wage." Windass spent two years at Wigan before moving to Wednesday in 2020 and played a crucial role as the Owls achieved promotion from League One in 2023. His expected arrival at Wrexham also comes despite claimed interest from second tier rivals Coventry, Derby and Norwich. ‌ The Welsh outfit have been busy in the transfer market this summer after achieving three successive promotions. Plymouth striker Ryan Hardie was their first arrival, followed by Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward. Wrexham then splashed their cash last week to lure left-back Liberato Cacace from Empoli for a club-record fee. The Red Dragons have also had a bid of £1.2m accepted as they look to sign Bolton captain George Thomason, according to the Bolton News.
