Venus Williams makes winning return after 16-month layoff

CNA3 days ago
Venus Williams enjoyed a winning return to tennis after more than a year away from the game as the 45-year-old American teamed up with compatriot Hailey Baptiste to win their round of 16 women's doubles tie at the Washington Open on Monday.
The seven-times Grand Slam singles champion had not played a competitive match in 16 months, with her last appearance on the WTA Tour coming at the Miami Open in March last year.
Williams and Baptiste beat Eugenie Bouchard and Clervie Ngounoue 6-3 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals in Washington, and the former world number one said if felt "inspiring" to be back on court.
"It wasn't easy for us but we brought it together quickly as a team. I love this game and still hitting it big," Williams told Sky Sports.
Williams enjoyed playing with 23-year-old Baptiste so much she joked that she should have teamed up with her years ago instead of playing with her younger sister Serena, who she won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles with.
"I could see that we were going to be a good team. We just should have started playing earlier, years ago, right?" she said. "I think Serena was just in the way."

Tsitsipas splits with coach Ivanisevic after less than two months

Stefanos Tsitsipas has ended his collaboration with coach Goran Ivanisevic after less than two months, the former world number three said. "Working with Goran Ivanisevic was brief but an intense experience and a truly valuable chapter in my journey," Tsitsipas posted on his Instagram story on Wednesday. Tsitsipas, ranked 29th, appointed Ivanisevic as his coach in May after a string of disappointing results at the Grand Slams. The 2021 French Open and 2023 Australian Open runner-up was forced to retire from his Wimbledon first-round match in June while trailing 6-3 6-2 to French qualifier Valentin Royer due to a back injury. Following Tsitsipas' opening round exit at Wimbledon, Ivanisevic gave a scathing assessment of the 26-year-old Greek, saying he has "never seen a more unprepared player" in his life. Tsitsipas has made one quarter-final in his last nine Grand Slam tournaments. Tsitsipas expressed thanks "for the time, effort and energy he dedicated to me and my team". "As we are now following our separate ways, I have only respect for Goran — not just for what he's achieved in tennis, but also for who he is as a person. I wish him nothing but the very best moving forward." Ivanisevic, who won Wimbledon as a player in 2001, helped Novak Djokovic claim nine of his 24 Grand Slam titles before leaving his team in March last year. He then had a short stint with Kazakh world number 12 Elena Rybakina this season.

Jannik Sinner brings back coach linked to doping case after winning Wimbledon

Photo: Instagram/janniksin Jannik Sinner, this season's Wimbledon men's singles title winner, recently announced that he brought back his previous fitness coach, Umberto Ferrara, despite his doping scandal. It was reported back then that Sinner ended his working relationship with Ferrara and his previous physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi, after an investigation revealed that he tested positive for the banned substance called clostebol. ' The decision has been made in alignment with Jannik's management team as part of ongoing preparations for upcoming tournaments, including the Cincinnati Open and US Open. Umberto has played an important role in Jannik's development to date, and his return reflects a renewed focus on continuity and performance at the highest level,' Sinner's team said in a statement. Sinner served a three-month ban earlier this season after settling the issue with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). WADA then accepted Sinner's explanation that he had unknowingly absorbed the illegal substance during the massages administered to him by Naldi at the Indian Wells back in March 2024. Moreover, Sinner also explained that the substance, which is known for its muscle-building effects, entered his system because Naldi used an over-the-counter spray on a cut on his own hand prior to treating Sinner. Furthermore, the spray had been provided to Naldi by Ferrara. Due to this, an independent tribunal cleared Sinner of any fault or negligence. At last year's US Open, Sinner announced his decision to part ways with Ferrara and Naldi: ' Now, because of these mistakes, I'm not feeling that confident to continue with them. I was struggling a lot in the last months. I was waiting for the result. The only thing I need right now is some clean air.' Before reconnecting with Ferrera, Sinner recently ended his partnership with Marco Panichi and Ulises Badio, his trainer and physiotherapist, before Wimbledon. Sinner's comeback Despite all the struggles that Sinner had to go through because of his doping suspension, the athlete had a remarkable comeback to the sport by capturing this year's Wimbledon title, defeating the reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz in the final. Sinner secured the victory with a strong 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, earning his fourth Grand Slam championship. 'It's mostly emotional, because I had a very tough loss in Paris… But at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter how you win or how you lose at important tournaments; you just have to understand what you did wrong and try to work on that, and that's exactly what we did. We tried to accept the loss and just kept working. This is for sure one of the reasons I am holding this trophy here. I am just so grateful that I am healthy and have great people around me, and holding this trophy means a lot,' Sinner said. Read more about Jannik Sinner's success at the 2025 Wimbledon here. Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn Images/File Photo NEW YORK - Venus Williams has received a wild card main draw entry into the Cincinnati Open, the tournament said on Wednesday, as the 45-year-old American enjoys an age-defying return to the spotlight. The seven-times Grand Slam singles champion became the oldest player to win a WTA singles match since 2004 when she beat world number 35 Peyton Stearns at the Washington Open on Tuesday, after a 16-month absence from the game. Williams, who will play Polish fifth seed Magdalena Frech in the next round in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, previously declined a wild card entry invite for Indian Wells earlier this year. The Cincinnati Open also offered a wild card invite to hometown talent Caty McNally, who recently returned to action after undergoing elbow surgery last year. The main draw of the Cincinnati Open begins on August 7. REUTERS
