Weight loss drugs could improve polycystic ovary syndrome: All you need to know
Image credits: Getty Images According to the Endocrine Society, an estimated 5-6 million women of reproductive age in the U.S. are affected by PCOS, which is frequently underdiagnosed. Caused by high levels of testosterone and androgens, polycystic ovary syndrome leads to symptoms such as irregular periods, excess hair growth, acne, insulin resistance and more. It is one of the leading causes of infertility and is strongly linked to metabolic issues, leading to weight gain and hormonal imbalance. One would think a condition affecting such a huge number of women would have a treatment and medicine ready by now. However, when it comes to PCOS, a condition which also leads to other damaging conditions such as obesity and Type 2 diabetes, there's no standard treatment. Mostly, women opt for birth control, lifestyle changes and a diabetes drug, Metformin, which helps with some symptoms. However, now, a ray of light has come around in the form of popular weight loss drugs that are shockingly helping with improving PCOS. One of the many women who have experienced a positive result is Grace Hamilton, 27, who earlier had to battle problems like hair loss, heavy periods, inconsistent menstrual cycles, mental health problems and sudden weight loss. After getting diagnosed with PCOS, she tried birth control and lifestyle changes, only to see limited improvements. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas in Dubai | Search Ads Get Info Undo It was in 2024 when Hamilton joined a trial examining the effects of GLP-1 drugs in PCOS patients. In October, she received her first dose of semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic. The results, as she said to CNBC were almost immediate with resumed periods, hair regrowth and improvement in depression and anxiety. 'I'm so glad that I stuck with it because it was just clear as day that it was the missing link for me,' said Hamilton, adding that she also maintained a diet and exercise regimen. Are weight loss drugs really the answer? Image credits: Getty Images Some health experts see huge potential in GLP-1, particularly in their effect on improving weight loss and insulin sensitivity. 'The unmet need is massive,' said Dr. Melanie Cree, a pediatric endocrinologist at Children's Hospital Colorado, to CNBC. 'Primary therapies used for PCOS symptoms haven't changed in nearly 50 years.' Cree has been studying the effects of GLP-1 in adolescents with PCOS for more than 10 years. She previously studied the oral form of semaglutide and now has an ongoing clinical trial with the injectable version, which worked well for patients like Hamilton. Her trial began in 2023 with girls and women between the ages of 12-35 with obesity and PCOS who are on or off Metformin. Semaglutide was administered to the patients for 10 months to analyse their weight loss, metabolic changes and reproductive functions. The initial data included 11 women who completed the 10-month trial and were not on Metformin. 8 of these lost more than 10% of their body weight and saw a reduction in their hormone levels. Six of the 8 women even reported more regular periods. However, her study group is much smaller compared to the studies done on the popular weight loss drugs, and the results did not show similar effects on everyone. Here, the importance of conducting larger and longer trials on the same is important. This is because the potential for GLP-1 to cause relief in various PCOS symptoms remains. In previous studies, it has been found that in adults with PCOS, losing even 5% of body weight can improve insulin sensitivity. Thus, the body can respond better to insulin, and the pancreas doesn't need to pump out more insulin to keep the blood sugar in check. This will lower insulin levels, in turn lowering the production of testosterone and reducing symptoms of irregular period, acne and excess hair growth. Semaglutide not only improves insulin sensitivity but also reduces appetite by slowing how quickly the food leaves the stomach, prompting the pancreas to release insulin when the blood sugar is high and suppressing the release of a hormone that elevates blood sugar. Not only trials, a recent survey of 1700 people by the birth control app Natural Cycles, revealed that 64% of women with PCOS who took GLP-1 reported more predictable periods, and 20% reported that their bleeding days were shorter. Now, what is needed is a much larger research study on the subject to analyse its effects and see if it can be administered to all women with PCOS.

Why some people can't digest chickpeas- and what to do instead
Image credits: Getty Images Chickpeas are one of the most popular and versatile legumes. They are popular in various cuisines and are known for their creamy and nutty flavour. From salads to curries, chickpeas are the star additions to many recipes. However, many people report digestive issues such as gastrointestinal problems, after consuming the legumes. While one may think of the cause as an allergy or bad recipe, there is a completely natural reason as to why you have a gassy stomach after eating them. Find out below! Why can't some people digest chickpeas? Image credits: Getty Images There are a variety of reasons why people are not able to digest chickpeas. From antinutrients to undercooking, any of the below-mentioned reasons could be why chickpeas make your stomach irritated. High Oligosaccharides (FODMAPs) Chickpeas are rich in sugars like raffinose and stachyose, which aren't fully digested by the small intestine. When these reach the colon, the gut bacteria ferment them, leading to bloating and discomfort. This problem is high in people with sensitive digestion or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Antinutrients Chickpeas contain antinutrients such as tannin, phytic acid and lectins that obstruct the nutritional quality of the legumes and hinder their absorption and thus cause digestive problems in the gut. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villa Prices in Dubai Might Be Lower Than You Think! Villa for sale in Dubai | Search Ads Learn More Undo Sudden increase in fibre intake According to the National Library of Medicine, chickpeas contain about 12.2 g of fibre, making them rich in the nutrient. Thus, a sudden increase in the consumption of chickpeas can overwhelm the gut and lead to bloating and gas. Under or over cooking One of the best ways to eat chickpeas is to cook them until they can be mashed with a spoon easily. While canned chickpeas are a bit pre-cooked and easier to digest, when you cook them from scratch, they might remain undercooked. This can lead to digestive problems later and even make the stomach upset. Tough skin The outer layer of chickpeas consists of concentrated fibres and oligosaccharides that hinder digestion. Thus, in some cultures, people remove the peels to make them more digestible. ' What to do to easily digest chickpeas? Image credits: Getty Images Limit portion sizes Since chickpeas are rich in fibre, if you are a person whose diet did not include high fibre before, it is better to begin eating the legumes in small portions. This will slowly introduce the digestive system to them and then gradually increase the amount. Cook thoroughly As mentioned above, overcooked chickpeas are easier to digest. Begin by soaking the dried chickpeas overnight, and then cook them until they can be mashed easily. This will decrease the case of bloating. Combine with digestion-friendly herbs In countries like India, chickpeas are cooked with herbs that aid in their digestion and make the process easier. This includes cumin, fennel seeds, asafoetida and even some ginger. Try eating sprouted chickpeas Eating sprouted chickpeas will reduce the amount of phytic acid and antinutrients in the legumes, making them easier to digest. Experiment with other alternatives If following all of the above steps still leads to bloating after eating chickpeas, then try experimenting with other legumes. Green, red or brown lentils are lower in oligosaccharides, and edamame or navy beans are easier to digest. Additionally, for those fans of hummus, white bean puree can be a good substitute.

Rare flesh-eating bacteria on the rise in the US: Causes, symptoms, who is at risk, prevention and more
Image credits: Getty Images The warm temperatures of the summer are perfect breeding climates for a variety of bacteria that thrive in increasing temperatures. These developed and quickly rising bacteria are strong enough to battle the immune system and lead to severe health problems, including death. In 2025, a rare flesh-eating bacteria led to the death of four people in Florida. These deaths are among the 11 cases of bacterial infection confirmed in the year so far. What is this bacteria and how is it fatal? Know all about it below! What is the flesh-eating bacteria attacking Americans? Since 2016, Florida has recorded 448 cases and 100 deaths, all because of Vibrio Vulnificus. This is a rare flesh-eating bacteria found in warm, brackish seawater, according to state health officials. According to the Centres for Disease Prevention and Control, the bacteria are naturally found in higher numbers from May to October, due to the warm temperatures. How do people get infected? Image credits: X/@erlesen Vibrio Vulnificus infections are rare, with about 80,000 Vibrio cases and 100 related deaths each year in the United States, as per the CDC. The infections are mostly caused by the consumption of contaminated raw or undercooked seafood, when an open wound comes into contact with the bacteria-infected coastal waters, or when someone swallows the water. Who is at risk? This year, the deaths due to the bacteria occurred in Bay, Broward, Hillsborough and St. Johns counties. Other cases have been confirmed in Duval, Escambia, Lee, Manatee, Santa Rosa and Walton counties. The bacteria pose a high risk to individuals with weak immune systems or chronic health conditions. "People who are most at risk are immunocompromised — people with cirrhosis, people on chemo, anybody who has a compromised immune system of any kind," said Dr. Edward Hirsch, an infectious disease specialist at HCA Florida University Hospital, to CBS NEWS. What are the symptoms of Vibrio Vulnificus ? Image credits: X/@ChrisRobbinsWX Common symptoms of the bacterial infection include diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting and fever, as per the CDC. With open wounds, symptoms can be discolouration, swelling, skin breakdown and ulcers. According to Hirsch, "It progresses to making a hole in whatever part of your body got infected." How is Vibrio Vulnificus a flesh-eating bacteria? The bacteria don't eat, but kill the tissue. It can not penetrate unharmed skin, but if it enters through an existing break- like a wound, it can cause necrotizing fasciitis, and the flesh around the infection site could die. Then, according to the CDC, the infected site could require a major surgery or even limb amputation. How to prevent Vibrio Vulnificus infections? Image credits: X/@cnile56ace One of the primary methods of prevention is to rinse off after swimming in ocean water and properly clean and cook seafood, as these are the two main sources of infections. According to the Florida Department of Health and the CDC, other prevention tips include: Stay out of saltwater or brackish water if you have a wound or cut. If you get a cut in the water, leave the water immediately. Cover the wounds with a waterproof bandage if they come in contact with contaminated water or seafood. Avoid cross-contamination of cooked seafood and other seafood with raw seafood. Immediately visit a medical professional for infected wounds.
