Restoration of New Market clock tower may start in a fortnight
The document will form the basis of an agreement to be signed between KMC, which owns the 151-year-old market, and Trisys, which is coordinating the restoration funded by a private firm. According to Mitra, though the project received an in-principle approval, a formal agreement needs to be signed, which is likely to be concluded within a fortnight.
Though the tower with the four-faced clock and its Westminster chimes survived many monsoons and storms, it was left battered and bruised by cyclonic storm Amphan.
Lack of maintenance thereafter led to further damage. Water seeped in, causing cracks in the structure. The timber floors and decorative elements, including cast iron railings, will have to be redone. The wooden slats in the spire have fallen apart and the Westminster chimes and hourly dongs have stopped.
Portions of the intricate glasses that made up the 7-ft diameter dials went missing and wild vegetation has taken root.

"We will have to strengthen the structural stability of the tower, stop seepage of water, repair the flooring and the interior, improve light and ventilation, replace damaged artwork, and overhaul the clock and its chiming mechanism. The entire work will take around six months," said Mitra, who will lead the restoration team for the project. He has restored the Metropolitan Building, Howrah Town Hall, and Sister Nivedita's house.
Before work begins, Mitra also wants KMC to ensure coordination with police for temporary closure of Fenwick Bazar Street when required, arrangement for electric supply, site to stock repair and restoration material, and identify a place to set up temporary labour shelter.
KMC MMiC market Amiruddin (Bobby) assured the civic body's cooperation with the agency undertaking the restoration. "We want the clock tower to be restored in a manner that will wow visitors and will do everything needed to extend our cooperation," he said.
Swapan and Satyajit Dutta, the father-son duo that repaired and revived multiple public clock mechanisms in the city in recent years, will undertake the restoration of the Gillett & Johnston clock of the UK, in which one mechanism operates all four clocks.
"The clock will need a thorough overhaul. The entire process will take around two months," said Satyajit.
This is the first such restoration of a govt property to be funded by a private firm. Trisys CEO Mudar Patherya, who has banded together heritage lovers to form Kolkata Restorers that crowd-funded illumination of public buildings and repairs of public clocks, said city-based private firm Techno Electric decided to fund the restoration of the New Market clock tower. Company MD P P Gupta said, "I came to the city 50 years ago as a bank employee, ventured into business and established myself.
It feels good to be able to do something for the city."

Land acquisition prep begins for Patna-Purnia expressway
Patna: Revenue and land reforms department has started preparations for land acquisition across six districts — Vaishali , Samastipur, Darbhanga, Saharsa, Madhepura and Purnia — for the Patna-Purnia Greenfield Expressway project after receiving necessary clearances. Landowners will be compensated at market rates to ensure smooth acquisition and avoid potential disputes. Revenue and land reforms department's additional chief secretary Deepak Kumar Singh has written to all six district magistrates (DMs), instructing them to proceed with preliminary notifications after obtaining approval from the Central Valuation Committee. The directive came following a high-level meeting chaired by chief secretary Amrit Lal Meena recently, according to the officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). An NHAI official said Singh, in his letter to the DMs, told them to conduct a revised valuation of land based on the prevailing market price in the area, as per Section 26 (3) of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013, before initiating the process. "In this context, prohibition, excise and registration department has been granted the authority for special revision of MVR (minimum value registered) under Sub-rule 7 of the Bihar Stamp (Amendment) Rules, 2013, in light of the notification," said the official. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like അപൂർവ്വയിനം റോസാ വിത്തുകൾ: വേഗത്തിലുള്ള ഡെലിവറി Rare Climbing Rose Seeds Learn More Undo He added the 90m-wide greenfield expressway will be built with an estimated cost of Rs 18,042 crore till Chandbhatti village on Purnia-Kishanganj NH-27. "A total of 21 big and 140 small bridges, 11 ROBs, 21 interchanges and 322 underpasses will be built under the project. At the request of the state govt, spurs will be constructed to connect the cities of Samastipur, Saharsa and Madhepura to this project. The designated speed limit on this route will be 120km per hour. The state govt has appointed a competent authority for land acquisition," the official said. The project will also provide connectivity to Bihta Airport through a bridge between Dighwara and Sherpur, and eventually link to Darbhanga and Purnia airports. Once completed, the expressway will reduce travel time between Patna and Purnia by half from at least seven hours to three-four hours.

Difficult to project FY26 disinvestment mop-up at the moment: MoS for finance
The government on Monday said it is 'difficult' to anticipate the precise amount of its disinvestment proceeds this fiscal, as the process hinges on a number of factors, such as administrative feasibility, market conditions, economic outlook and investor interest. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, minister of state for finance Pankaj Chaudhary said the FY26 budget estimate of Rs 47,000 crore under miscellaneous capital receipts indicates total mop-up from the government's management of equity investments and public assets through various mechanisms, and not just disinvestment.
