ProFootballFocus ‘needs to see more' from Wisconsin quarterback Billy Edwards in 2025

All 70 Starters Ranked👀Using Analytics to Cluster/Rank EVERY Starting QB in College Football⬇️https://t.co/xEi53FG8ZA
ProFootballFocus listed Wisconsin starting quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. as one player that it needs to see more from in 2025.
Edwards' placement comes from the outlet's recent tier ranking of every starting signal-caller at the Football Bowl Subdivision level. He is one of eight players in the tier, which is the fifth-ranked of seven, along with Boston College's Grayson James, Cincinnati's Brendan Sorsby, Texas Tech's Behren Morton, Indiana's Fernando Mendoza, Nebraska's Dylan Raiola, Auburn's Jackson Arnold and Georgia's Gunner Stockton.
Here is how PFF explains its points of measurement:
The clustering algorithm draws from PFF's comprehensive grading and charting data dating back to the 2022 season. Key inputs include each quarterback's PFF passing and rushing grades, as well as their percentage of charted accurate throws — a measure that accounts for passes delivered in stride, within the receiver's frame or placed away from coverage. We've also factored in PFF Wins Above Average (WAA), which offers a balanced view of both volume and overall value contributed to a program.
More specifically, the tiers are ordered by each group's average WAA. The first contains the sport's potential stars, the second those who have flashed brilliance, the third great rushers, the fourth a group that shouldn't be forgotten, the fifth a group that needs to show more, the sixth a collection of longshots and, finally, the seventh a group of freshmen or others without FBS experience.
Edwards hovers around 0.0 in PFF WAA with nearly 600 dropbacks since 2022. The majority of his production came as a starter with Maryland last season. He finished the campaign having completed 65% of his passes for 2,881 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Several top-tier performances highlighted that season, including a 253-yard, two-touchdown game against Michigan State, a 289-yard, three-touchdown showing against Indiana, and a 373-yard, two-touchdown performance in a big win over USC.
Notably, Edwards delivered that production while playing behind a Maryland offensive line that ranked among the worst in the Big Ten. With a better supporting cast, Edwards should have little trouble matching those outputs with the Badgers in 2025.
Compared to the local sentiment in Madison, Wisconsin, national outlets are skeptical of Edwards. That may be due to Maryland's general struggles despite his strong play last season, or his limited experience as a full-time starter. Either way, Edwards has a great chance to elevate his national profile and NFL candidacy when the season kicks off this fall.

Colts' free agent signee stands out on Day 1 of training camp

One of the Colts' free agent signees was able to stand out during the team's first training camp practice. Indianapolis Colts' free agent signee, cornerback Charvarius Ward, impressed during the team's first training camp practice. "Very impressed," Shane Steichen said of Ward, via Locked on Colts. "Great signing by Chris (Ballard) to get him on this football team. You saw how sticky he was and the plays he made. I don't know how many he made today, but he made a ton. Great to have him out there." According to the Indy Star's Joel Erickson, two of the plays that Ward made in practice were pass breakups against Alec Pierce on a deep route and then against Michael Pittman. This offseason, the Colts signed Ward to a three-year, $54 million free agent deal. He joins the Colts one year removed from an All-Pro season in 2023. That year, Ward had five interceptions, 17 pass breakups, and allowed a completion rate of just 54%, per PFF. Beyond the production, Ward brings winning experience to the Colts defense--something this team doesn't have a lot of--having played in two Super Bowls, winning one of them. He's also a great fit for Lou Anarumo's defensive system, with his ability to play on an island and match up with a variety of wide receiver skill sets. "It's go time," Ward said via Locked on Colts after practice. "It's training camp time. It isn't time to be eased into anything right now. I'm getting ready for the season. We're getting ready for a long run, hopefully to make the playoffs. We all in, 10 toes deep right now." Ward, along with Cam Bynum and Anarumo calling the plays, will play a key role in turning this Colts' secondary around this season. A year ago, the Colts ranked in the bottom third of the NFL in passer rating, completion rate, pass deflections, and yards per pass attempt allowed.

Wisconsin men's basketball officially announces Villanova game at Fiserv Forum

Wisconsin men's basketball's second trip to Fiserv Forum in 2025-26 is official. The Badgers announced their Dec. 19 game against Villanova in Milwaukee in a press release on Friday. The tip time and television information will be announced at a later date. "Any time you get the chance to schedule a powerhouse program like Villanova it's a win-win," Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said in a release. "We get the chance to measure ourselves in the non-conference and Badgers fans in Wisconsin get to see a big-time college basketball game.' Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Sept. 24, with a presale opportunity for UW donors and men's basketball season ticket holders happening in mid-September. The Milwaukee game will be the third all-time meeting between Wisconsin and Villanova. The most recent game was in the 2017 NCAA Tournament, when the Badgers upset top-seeded Villanova, 65-62. Wisconsin also will play Oklahoma at Fiserv Forum on Oct. 24 for an exhibition game. 'Much like our exhibition against Oklahoma, I'm excited for our fans and alumni in Milwaukee to get a game in their backyard,' Gard said in the Friday release. 'The atmosphere has been awesome every time we've played in that area and I have no doubt Fiserv will be filled with red for these games as well." Fisher, 59, was most recently the head coach at Texas A&M. He served the position from 2018 until 2023. Fisher stunned the college football world when he left Florida State for College Station. He led the Seminoles to a national championship in 2014, winning the BCS National Championship. But Fisher disappointed at Texas A&M, failing to live up to the hype of his gigantic contract. He's been out of coaching for a couple of years now and it looks like it'll stay that way. However, he has officially landed a new job. On Tuesday morning, July 22, it was announced that Fisher had officially landed a new job. He has been hired as a college football analyst by ESPN. He is joining the ACC Network as a weekly analyst. "Jimbo Fisher is joining the ACC Network as a college football analyst, the network announced Tuesday," ESPN announced. "Fisher, who led Florida State to the 2013 national title, will appear weekly on the ACC Huddle on Saturdays." Fisher is excited for the opportunity. We've seen several coaches get into media work after getting fired, only to later return to coaching, following their performance on TV. "I'm looking forward to joining ACC Network and the Huddle team this season," Fisher said in a statement. "I've always had tremendous respect for this conference, and I'm looking forward to breaking down the action each week with such a talented group." ESPN had more details on his show: The ACC Huddle show will travel to the marquee ACC football game each weekend this season and will air Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Week 1 of ACC Huddle will be at Clemson, which hosts LSU on Aug. 30. Congrats, Jimbo.
