Wrexham: Midfielder Matty James geared up for big season
The midfielder immediately impressed and was rewarded with a new contract, extending his stay with the Reds until the end of the 2025-26 season.
Having helped Wrexham clinch an historic third successive promotion and place in the Championship, everything worked out well in the end for James and there were no worries about where he would be playing next season with the 33-year-old tied down by Phil Parkinson.
"I had a chat with my wife and family about how strange it was last year for me," said James, who is now in Australia where the Reds will play three games on their Down Under tour.
"Weeks and months passed me by and I was training on my own so it was quite hard.
"This summer was a lot more relaxed and I could look forward to the start of the new season knowing that my future is taken care of.
"That allowed me to enjoy the summer and be prepared and ready to go again.
"It was unbelievable the way we finished last season and now we have got the excitement of the up-coming Championship season."
Wrexham are back in the second tier for the first time in 43 years and it is a division that James is no stranger to.
He made 104 appearances for Bristol City in three Championship campaigns, scoring four goals, and previously enjoyed a long spell with Leicester City where he was a promotion winner from the second tier and was with the Foxes when they won the Premier League in 2016.
"The Championship a tough league and I think everybody knows that," he said.
"It's one of the most watched leagues in the world and with the teams that are in there, it becomes hard in terms of money that people have to spend
"The players that play in the Championship are obviously excellent players, we have just got to relish the challenge and go out there and play our way, and hopefully take the winning. mentality we've got into the start of the season."

Championship: Hull City confident of resolving transfer embargo imposed by EFL
City reached the play-offs last season, securing a top-six finish against the odds as more fancied sides missed out, proof says James that anything can happen.
"You have just got to stick at it in the Championship," he added.
"If you are in and around the middle of the table then anything can happen.
"Every game is a tough game and when I was at Bristol City, we had a good squad and kind of improved each year.
"They obviously they did really well last year to get in the play-offs so it just shows that hopefully you can try and build something and see how the season goes."

Ronaldo's latest move met with brutal statement by Prem winner 'He's done'
Cristiano Ronaldo has committed his future to Al-Nassr for the next two years in a deal worth a stunning £492million, but Emmanuel Petit has slammed the move and claimed it shows he has fallen away from the top level Former Arsenal and Chelsea star Emmanuel Petit has taken aim at Cristiano Ronaldo, claiming the Manchester United legend is "done at the highest level" after signing a new deal with Al-Nassr. Ronaldo's future was up in the air this summer after he teased "this chapter is over" at the end of the last Saudi Pro League season, leading to speculation he could link up with rivals Al-Hilal. But the 40-year-old quickly ended speculation over his future by putting pen to paper with the Middle East outfit over a new deal that will reportedly earn him around £492million. That makes him the top-earning athlete in the world and Ronaldo has shown he has no plans to slow down or retire in the immediate future - having helped Portugal win the Nations League last month. He has also continued to plunder an impressive amount of goals after netting 35 times in 41 games last season. However, Petit - who won the Premier League with Arsenal in 1998 - believes that Ronaldo will not return to the top level in Europe after committing his future to Al-Nassr. "Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that he is done at the highest level with his new Saudi deal, but he confirmed that when he left Manchester United," Petit told Escapist Magazine. "Having said that, no one could have matched the crazy money he is being paid, but at 40 he is still playing well and performing for the national team. "I expect to see him at the World Cup next year but I'm not shocked he is staying in Saudi, no one could've matched those terms. They are crazy." Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr at the end of 2022 after an accrimonious departure from Manchester United, who he accused of "betraying" him by forcing him out of the club. The veteran star will go down as one of the greatest players to have played the game after netting a career total of 956 goals and he is now chasing 1,000. Ronaldo still appears to be hungrier than ever after signing another deal with Al-Nassr. When his new contract was announced, he wrote: "A new chapter begins. Same passion, same dream. Let's make history together." He said he received offers to play elsewhere this summer before ultimately committing his future to the Middle East, signing until 2027.

Joao Pedro in dreamland after firing Chelsea into Club World Cup final
Joao Pedro felt he was dreaming after scoring twice on his full Chelsea debut to send them into the Club World Cup final. The Brazil forward, who only completed his £60million move to the Blues from Brighton last week, struck in each half against his former club Fluminense to secure a 2-0 win in Tuesday's semi-final in New York. The Premier League side, who are now guaranteed a payday of around £80million, will face either Paris St Germain or Real Madrid in the final on Sunday. Dancing their way to the Final 🕺 @ChelseaFC | #FIFACWC — FIFA Club World Cup (@FIFACWC) July 8, 2025 Pedro was delighted with his performance although, having muted his celebrations in front of his old fans, he admitted to mixed feelings. The 23-year-old told DAZN: 'I think it was a dream. I don't think it could have been better – two goals. Now we need to think about the final. 'I am happy to score my first goals for Chelsea but also I know this tournament is very important for Fluminense. 'I can just say sorry but I have to be professional. I play for Chelsea. They pay me to score goals and today I was happy to score. 'Now I need to rest, focus on the final because I think it will be a very important game.' Take a bow, Joao Pedro. 🙌 — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) July 8, 2025 Pedro opened the scoring with a fine curling strike from outside the area in the 18th minute and then doubled the lead with a ferocious shot off the underside of the bar just before the hour. It was a controlled, professional performance from Chelsea, although they had a scare at 1-0 when a penalty was awarded to Fluminense for handball against Trevoh Chalobah. It was overturned following a VAR review. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said: 'It is a great achievement. It has been a fantastic season – top four in the Premier League, Conference League (winners) and now in the final of this competition. We are so, so happy.' On the performance of Pedro, Maresca added: 'We know that we have players that are able to do that and we know we have to help them get in situations where they can do that and we know Joao can do this.' The match was Chelsea's 63rd of a long 2024-25 campaign that began last August. 'We go game by game,' said Maresca. 'Finally we have the last game of the season and hopefully we can win the tournament.' The downside for Chelsea was the ankle injury suffered by midfielder Moises Caicedo in the closing stages. Maresca said: 'I told him that he has to do everything to be on the pitch on Sunday so we will see.' Fluminense coach Renato Gaucho felt the outcome might have been different had the penalty decision stood. He said: 'We knew there would be strong pressure from Chelsea and we would have to suffer. 'They knew how to take their opportunities and unfortunately we didn't make the most of ours. 'There was the penalty disallowed. A few would give it and others wouldn't. If they had awarded the penalty it would have been a different story.'
