Denmark Supporting De-Mining in Iraq

UNMAS welcomes a new contribution from the Government of Denmark in support of the Iraqi mine action sector
The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in Iraq welcomes a generous contribution of DKK 22,000,000 (approximately US$ 3,4 million) from the Government of Denmark. This funding will support mine action efforts assisting the Government of Iraq (GoI) in protecting civilians from the threat of explosive ordnance (EO) and enabling humanitarian, socio-economic, and reconstruction efforts in EO-affected areas.
Iraq remains one of the most EO contaminated countries in the world. According to the national mine action authorities - the Directorate for Mine Action (DMA) and the Iraqi Kurdistan Mine Action Agency (IKMAA) - more than 2,723 square kilometers are contaminated with landmines, cluster munitions, improvised explosive devices, and other types of explosive remnants of war across Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. EO poses a major threat to public safety and hinders access to basic services, livelihood opportunities, and critical infrastructure.
The new contribution from the Government of Denmark will enable UNMAS Iraq to continue supporting national mine action authorities in building a sustainable and well-coordinated mine action sector. UNMAS remains committed to strengthening the nationalisation of the mine action response by implementing and managing survey and clearance operations, as well as explosive ordnance risk education (EORE) activities, in the most heavily affected and vulnerable areas of Iraq.
" UNMAS Iraq deeply appreciates the generous contribution from the Government of Denmark. The contributions enable us to continue assisting the DMA and IKMAA, as well as Iraqi national operators, in creating a safe environment for all Iraqis. Under Denmark's Peace and Stabilisation Programme 2022-2025, Denmark has contributed approximately US$ 11.5 million. UNMAS looks forward to further cooperation starting from 2026, " said Pehr Lodhammar, UNMAS Chief Mine Action Programme.
Since 2015, the Government of Denmark has contributed over US$ 41 million to the UNMAS Iraq programme, making Denmark one of its most longstanding and committed donors. Denmark's continued support plays a critical role in ensuring progress towards a safer Iraq, where affected communities can rebuild their lives free from the threat of explosive ordnance.

Iraq approves new export routes and business reforms

Baghdad ( – Iraq's Ministerial Council for Economy took significant strides on Monday to bolster national industries and streamline business, approving a series of measures aimed at strengthening the country's economic footing. In a major boost for Iraqi industry, the council approved a request from the Ministry of Industry to allow the Baghdad Petrochemical Refinery Company to export oxidized asphalt through the Trebil border crossing, opening up new avenues for international trade and revenue. Further enhancing Iraq's appeal to international partners, the council also approved a recommendation to simplify procedures for foreign companies. The move exempts firms involved in supply or consulting contracts from the requirement of opening a local branch, reducing bureaucracy and making it easier to do business in the country. The meeting, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Fuad Hussein, also addressed the crucial issue of national economic integration. A permanent committee will be formed, including representatives from the federal government and the Kurdistan Region, to unify customs tariffs and procedures across all of Iraq's border crossings, promoting seamless trade nationwide. Discussions also centered on improving the overall business environment, with the council affirming its commitment to implementing reforms that simplify procedures, update legislation, and embrace digital technology. These coordinated decisions underscore a determined effort by the Iraqi government to create a more robust, unified, and attractive economy for both domestic and international enterprise.

Iraq's Umm Qasr Port handles +93K containers in July

Shafaq News – Basra Iraq's northern Umm Qasr Port in Basra recorded a sharp rise in shipping activity in July, signaling growing efficiency in Iraqi port operations and increasing confidence from global maritime carriers. Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, told Shafaq News that the port received 118 container vessels last month, handling over one million tons of cargo, a performance he described as 'remarkable.' He added that total container throughput reached 93,103 units, including 47,712 imported containers, 43,098 exported containers, and 2,293 for domestic products, with a combined weight of 1,074,315 tons.
