Johnson City native Josh Owens chosen 84th in the 3rd round by the Texas Rangers

Johnson City, TN — Along with a couple of ETSU players, the guy we had our eye on Sunday night was Johnson City native Josh Owens.
And despite not hearing his name in the first 2 rounds, Owens came off the board in the third round with the 84th pick by the Texas Rangers. The combination pitcher/infielder for Providence Academy last season has been in Elizabethton – playing for his dad as a member of the River Riders, where he has hit .271 in 20 games with a homer, and 12 RBIs.
He is headed to the same organization that took Elizabethon's Evan Carter, whom HE IS compared to in the 2020 draft.

'I see it in the game, but I see the similarity in how our story has been to get to professional baseball. He might have had a little bit rougher of those Covid years and things than I did, but, you know, just two guys coming over here from East Tennessee, and we just love the game. And, we didn't have the high profile, like some of these guys did come out of high school, but we love the game, and we always play hard. And the Lord put us in the best positions to succeed. And so here we are today, and we're both Texas Rangers, so that's awesome, says Owens.'
Owens has until August 1 to sign his pro contract and begin his professional career. If he doesn't sign, he will not be eligible to be drafted again until the conclusion of his junior year at Georgia Southern.
