Tennessee Titans practice updates Day 1: Latest news, highlights from NFL training camp

Yahoo28-07-2025
Cam Ward and the Tennessee Titans will convene for the first training camp practice of the 2025 NFL preseason on Wednesday, July 23, kicking off the start of coach Brian Callahan's second season in charge and Ward's debut as the quarterback of the present and future.
The Titans will begin practice at 9:05 a.m. CT from Ascension St. Thomas Sports Park, with Ward, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2025 draft, leading the way. The team will feature several new faces acquired in the offseason, including veterans like tackle Dan Moore Jr., receiver Tyler Lockett and linebacker Cody Barton, as well as rookies such as outside linebacker Femi Oladejo, safety Kevin Winston Jr., and receivers Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike.
Callahan will address the media prior to the practice, and Ward is expected to speak to the media afterward.
This session is the first of nine before the team's preseason opener Aug. 9 against the Buccaneers in Tampa, Florida. Here are highlights from training camp, as well as updates on the Titans' season ahead.
Tennessee Titans practice updates for Day 1 training camp
Post-Day 1 notes from players speaking to the media
Jeffery Simmons said the defense did 40 up-downs before practice, an idea of defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson.
Simmons mentioned multiple times that he wanted the team to have the mentality to not have a season like 2024 happen again. "Not making the playoffs sucks," Simmons said. "That should be personal."
Cam Ward: "We were mid in practice today, offensively."
More Ward: "Just the pieces that we have, I think we are capable of being one of the top offensives in the league."
Cam Ward speaks to the media
Cam Ward will speak with the media soon. Below is the Titans' press conference feed, with other players also expected to speak:
Cam Ward in 11-on-11 work
Cam Ward and the Titans' first-team offense are working through 11-on-11 team periods right now.
First drive: Ward completes short passes to Van Jefferson and Tyler Lockett, with a couple runs in between.
Second drive: Ward is 1-for-2, with a Jarvis Brownlee pass breakup on a Van Jefferson target and a screen pass completed to Tyjae Spears
Third drive: Ward throws complete to Chig Okonkwo for a short gain, then his pass to Calvin Ridley is incomplete.
Fourth drive: Ward finds Tyler Lockett on a quick pass for a few yards, can't connect with Treylon Burks on a deep ball and has a pass batted down at the line of scrimmage.
Ward finishes 5-for-9 in the first team period of camp, all on relatively short targets besides the Burks incompletion.

Cam Ward's first camp practice
Cam Ward opens his first training camp practice in the NFL with some tosses in front of the fans.
It cannot be understated how much this season hinges on Ward's development, good record or not.
More notes from Brian Callahan
Lorenzo Carter's retirement shouldn't impact the amount of practice reps among the edge rushers during training camp, though some younger outside linebackers may get a bit of an increased look in practice.
Callahan believes he has improved in several areas ahead of his second year as an NFL head coach. "I feel really good about where I've developed too, just like our players probably too from their first year to their second year," Callahan said.
Brian Callahan: 'Hopefully sooner than later' for L'Jarius Sneed being activated from the PUP
Titans coach Brian Callahan didn't have much of a timeline for L'Jarius Sneed's activation off of the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, but Callahan wants Sneed to get up to speed when he's ready.
"Hopefully sooner than later he'll be out here," Callahan said Wednesday. "He hasn't practiced a lot as of late, and we're going to have to get his legs back under him, get him back in shape. In football shape, that is, playing football. And so that's a process that'll start hopefully sooner than later, and we can get him back on the practice field, practicing and communicating with his teammates."
'No concrete plan' for Will Levis' rehab yet
After Will Levis' surgery next week, there is "no concrete plan" for where Levis' rehabilitation will take place and whether or not he'll be in the team facility during that time, Brian Callahan said. Levis will have the surgery in California and do some immediate post-op rehab there.
Cam Ward will take first-team reps
Cam Ward will take the first-team reps from the start of training camp, Brian Callahan confirms. That is no surprise.
Brian Callahan: Cam Ward's development is 'a daily process'
Titans coach Brian Callahan is at the podium, and his first question is about Cam Ward and what a good progression looks like through training camp.
"It's carrying over those things you've learned and applying them in a little bit more intense setting," Callahan said. "And now we get a chance to actually go play a little football, play against some different schemes. His development is a daily process, and there's going to be things that we have to correct every day, and there's going to be things he's going to do really well every day and we're going to try and continue those things."
Good morning on Day 1 of training camp
The Titans begin practice at about 9 a.m., with Brian Callahan speaking to the media at 8:45 a.m. at Ascension Saint Thomas Sports Park.
Tennessee Titans training camp schedule
The Titans opened training camp on July 23. They have nine practices scheduled between the start of camp and the first preseason game on Aug. 9 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Steve Pagliuca deal to purchase, relocate Sun reportedly challenged by Connecticut-based group led by Marc Lasry

One day after reports about a deal led by Steve Pagliuca to purchase and relocate the Connecticut Sun, another competing bid appears to have emerged. Pagliuca, a minority owner of the Boston Celtics, confirmed Sunday that an investor group led by him has extended an offer to buy the Sun from the Mohegan Tribe, with reports that the $325 million deal includes plans to relocate the team to Boston. But additional reports on Monday show that the deal is far from over. A new, Connecticut-based bid is looking to challenge Pagliuca's bid and keep the team in Connecticut, per multiple reports. The group is reportedly led by former Milwaukee Bucks owner Marc Lasry, who grew up in West Hartford, CT and still has ties to the area. Lasry sold his stake in the Bucks to the Haslam family in 2023, and is now looking to break into the WNBA. The Lasry-led group is reportedly only in the running due to some potential league intervention to slow down the sale process. Per Front Office Sports, a deal with Pagliuca was initially agreed on in early July, and was presented to WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert. But it never went before the WNBA Board of Governors, who has to approve the sale. As a result, the exclusivity period expired, reportedly opening the sale back up to other groups, including the bid led by Lasry. The Mohegan Tribe purchased the team, then the Orlando Miracle, in 2002 for $10 million and moved the team to Uncasville, CT. The Sun have played in Mohegan Sun Arena, located inside the Mohegan Sun Casino, since the relocated team began play in 2003. Part of the Lasry-led bid would relocate the Sun, in-state, to play in PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford, per the Hartford Courant. The arena is currently host to New York Rangers AHL affiliate Hartford Wolf Pack, as well as the UConn men's and women's basketball and men's hockey. Pagliuca, on the other hand, plans to move the team. Though his primary target seems to be Boston, Pagliuca said in a statement Sunday that the investment group has "the objective of keeping New England's WNBA team in New England," adding that the group had the support of both Massachussetts governor Maura Healy and Rhode Island governor Daniel McKee. As a result, Providence, Rhode Island appears to be in the running as another potential landing spot for the team. The Pagliuca group's $325 million price tag also reportedly includes a commitment to spend $100 million on a new practice facility, wherever the team ends up. But any team relocation would need to be approved by the WNBA. Additionally the WNBA can reportedly force a sale to a Connecticut-based group, with The Boston Globe reporting that the Mohegan Tribe would cooperate if that were to happen. The league has not explicitly said that it wants the team to stay in Connecticut, but did release a statement following reports on the sale to Pagliuca. In the statement, the WNBA pointedly noted that Boston had not applied for one of the expansion bids, which were eventually awarded to Detroit, Cleveland and Philadelphia, and that the cities that did apply would receive "priority" over Boston. "Relocation decisions are made by the WNBA Board of Governors and not by individual teams," the statement began, firmly setting the boundary. The Connecticut-based group has the backing of Connecticut governor Ned Lamont, who told reporters on Monday that he was doing everything he could to keep the team in the state. "Can't believe everything you read," Lamont said, via CT Insider. "When it comes to the Connecticut Sun, we're late in the fourth quarter, we still have some catching up to do, but it's not over until it's over. We're fighting like heck. Connecticut is the home of women's basketball. The Sun ought to be right here." Lamont also seemed inclined to kick in public money towards a potential in-state deal, saying that his administration will "do what it takes to keep the Sun in Connecticut." On the other end, Governor Healey told The Boston Globe on Sunday that "it would be great for Boston" to get a WNBA franchise. Healey mentioned that the Sun have played in Boston's TD Garden for two straight years, with both games recording sellout crowds. "I've been at this for a couple of years. It would be great for the Connecticut Sun to move to Boston and represent all of New England. We are the hub of New England and the place that basketball was invented," Healey said. "I think it makes a lot of sense." With multiple bids competing for the team, it is unclear how long the sale would take. The reported $325 million in the Pagliuca would be the largest sale in WNBA history, but it's possible that the Lasry-led group would be able to match that number, and that it would come down to the WNBA Board of Governors — who are already preoccupied with ongoing negotiations for the new collective bargaining agreement — for the final decision, rather than the Mohegan Tribe.

Dodgers activate Max Muncy from injured list, but also put Tommy Edman on the shelf

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers activated Max Muncy from the injured list and put fellow infielder Tommy Edman on the list Monday. Muncy has been out since July 2, missing nearly five weeks with a bone bruise in his knee after a collision on a tag play during a game against the Chicago White Sox. The veteran slugger had been on a monthlong roll at the time of his injury, boosting his OPS to .832 with 13 homers and 55 RBIs. Muncy returned more quickly than the initial six-week projection for his recovery. He was batting fifth and playing third base at Dodger Stadium on Monday night when Los Angeles opened a homestand against the St. Louis Cardinals. 'He's put in a lot of work to get back with this timeline,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. 'Getting him back lengthens and strengthens our lineup.' But just when Muncy is healthy enough to return, the NL West-leading Dodgers are losing Edman after he aggravated his injured right ankle. Edman left a game in Boston last week after apparently spraining his ankle while running the bases, and he came out of the Dodgers' game against Tampa Bay on Sunday with pain from running the bases again. 'Don't know how long it's going to be, but I do think that he'll be back at some point,' Roberts said. 'The main thing is when he gets back, how we can make sure that this doesn't happen again. It's kind of a ligament strain, tendons, whatever it is.' Edman also missed time in May with a sprained ankle. Last year's NLCS MVP is batting .228 with 12 homers and 44 RBIs this season. Edman joins the lengthy list of Dodgers hoping to return soon from injuries to bolster the defending World Series champions' repeat bid. Los Angeles didn't make a bold move at the trade deadline last week, deciding to roll with its current roster while aiming for full health in October. Utilityman Kiké Hernández went out last month with a sprained left elbow, and he isn't close to returning despite undergoing multiple procedures including platelet-rich plasma therapy and cortisone shots. 'We're not there yet, as far as worrying the season is lost' for Hernández, Roberts said. Other injury news is more encouraging: Second baseman Hyeseong Kim is swinging a bat and taking grounders in anticipation of returning from left shoulder bursitis as early as this weekend, while reliever Tanner Scott will throw another batting practice session soon in his recovery from left elbow inflammation. Roki Sasaki is still on the injured list on his bobblehead night Monday. The rookie right-hander has been out since May 8 with a right shoulder injury, but he will throw three live innings Friday after hitting mid-90s velocity in his most recent mound session. If his arm continues to feel good, he will get a minor league rehab assignment next week, Roberts said. ___ AP MLB:

Browns add QB Tyler Huntley

When you have two quarterbacks, you have none. When you have five quarterbacks, you're the Browns. When you have six quarterbacks, you're f—ked. Via Adam Schefter of the Browns have added Pro Bowl (seriously) quarterback Tyler Huntley. The reason is far less dysfunctional than the Browns have been. Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel have hamstring injuries. Sheduer Sanders has a sore shoulder. They need healthy bodies to get through practice. Enter Huntley. Huntley spent four seasons with the Browns, from 2020 through 2023. He spent the 2024 offseason with the Browns. He was released in late August, and he returned to Baltimore's practice squad. The Dolphins signed him to the active roster after Tua Tagovailoa suffered his latest concussion. Huntley started five games in 2024. Huntley is much more than a camp arm. He has 25 regular-season appearances, and 14 regular-season starts. It's somewhat surprising he was available. It's not surprising that the Browns have pounced on yet another quarterback. So, yes, Cleveland now has a six-pack of quarterbacks. And their fans may need a Manhattan.
