Female Film Club Launches Global Short-Film Fund at Cannes (EXCLUSIVE)

Yahoo20-05-2025
Female Film Club, the burgeoning global network for women and non-binary filmmakers, is unveiling a €10,000 ($11,260) Global Short-Film Fund during the Cannes Film Festival on Monday.
The initiative represents a dedicated international fund designed specifically to support emerging directors regardless of geographical location.

The fund, which will begin accepting submissions on June 16, emerges from strategic partnerships with IMGN.AI, a developer of artificial intelligence tools for filmmakers, and SMASH Media, an IP-matchmaking platform connecting creators with producers and financiers.
According to the organization, the fund will provide a single grant of €10,000 to produce a short film. Eligibility extends to filmmakers who identify as women or non-binary from any country, provided their projects are in development or pre-production phases.
Applications will undergo scrutiny from an international panel of female industry leaders, a process designed to ensure diverse perspectives and balanced regional representation. Winners will be announced during the BFI London Film Festival in October, with successful applicants invited to a London networking event featuring mentors and potential production partners.
'We've built a community of over 55 nationalities and thousands of members,' said Liza van der Smissen and Nicole Lieberman, who co-founded the organization. 'We know that access to funding is uneven – some regions have multiple grant opportunities, while others have none. This fund levels the playing field.'
'We're committed to supporting the very best regardless of geography. Whether you're in Nairobi, New Delhi, or São Paulo, this fund is for you,' the co-founders added.
Since its 2020 inception, Female Film Club has established itself as more than just a funding source. The organization operates as an online members club offering weekly programming focused on mindset development, skill-building and networking. Their curriculum includes Neuro-Linguistic Programming-backed confidence training, goal-setting workshops, and strategic industry navigation, supplemented by masterclasses featuring award-winning female filmmakers.
The organization reports that members have consistently secured project financing, agent representation, and festival premieres after joining their community of over 3,000 filmmakers across more than 55 nationalities.
IMGN.AI, one of the fund's partners, specializes in AI-driven tools that streamline pre-production, editing, and VFX workflows. SMASH Media, the other key supporter, operates as an AI-assisted platform connecting Film & TV creators with producers, commissioners, and financiers worldwide.

Cardi B wipes Stefon Diggs from her social media a month after going Instagram official

Cardi B, who wonders 'Am I the Drama?' on her upcoming album, now faces a different question from curious fans: Did she split with Stefon Diggs? The Grammy-winning 'Bodak Yellow' rapper sparked breakup chatter this week after eagle-eyed followers noticed she had taken down photos featuring NFL star Diggs from her Instagram page. Cardi B, 32, and Diggs, 31, hard-launched their relationship during the NBA Playoffs in May and made things Instagram official in June. Representatives for Cardi B and Diggs did not immediately respond to The Times on Tuesday. In June, Cardi B flaunted her relationship with the New England Patriots wide receiver, sharing very intimate photos from a steamy boating trip in a since-removed Instagram carousel. 'Chapter 5 ……Hello Chapter six,' Cardi B captioned the collection of photos, which is no longer publicly visible on her profile. Cardi B and Diggs first sparked dating rumors in February, when TMZ published video of the pair arriving at a Miami hotel during Valentine's Day weekend. In April, they were spotted together again partying it up at a Manhattan nightclub. Photos of the rapper dancing on the athlete's lap spread online and even got a thumbs-up from the musician's estranged husband, Migos rapper Offset. Cardi B reportedly filed to divorce Offset in 2024. Since then, their relationship has been far from friendly as the pair — who share three young children — continue to spar on social media. While Cardi B's Instagram does not currently feature any photos of Diggs, it's worth noting that they still follow each other on the app. Cardi B and Offset, on the other hand, are no longer Instagram mutuals. Speculation about the status of Cardi B's romantic life surfaced as she arrived at Paris Fashion Week sans Diggs. She appeared at the Schiaparelli showcase at Petit Palais wearing a body-hugging gown with a dramatic neckline and fringe. A live crow was perched on the 'W.A.P.' artist's right hand, evoking imagery from her forthcoming album. Cardi B revealed in late June that her long-anticipated sophomore album, 'Am I the Drama?,' is set to drop Sept. 19, seven years after her debut, 'Invasion of Privacy.' Her social media announcement included a look at the theatrical album cover: She wears an abstract red body suit and matching fishnet stockings, grabbing one heel as a dark bird rests on her shoe and more of them swarm around her. Before the announcement, Cardi B reflected in a teaser on 'seven years of love, life and loss' and trading in grace for hell. 'I learned power's not given. It's taken,' the Bronx native says in the video. 'I'm shedding feathers and no more tears. I'm not back. I'm beyond.'

As Essence fest takes blame for Lauryn Hill's wildly late set, Stephanie Mills lets criticism rip

The Essence Festival has taken responsibility for a Lauryn Hill performance that saw the hip-hop legend take the stage at 2:30 in the morning. "Let's be very clear — WE don't play about Ms. Lauryn Hill. Not for clicks. Not for headlines," organizers wrote Sunday on Instagram. "She arrived on schedule, stepped on that stage, and delivered the kind of performance only a legend can.' Read more: Fugees lawsuit: Pras Michél, Lauryn Hill trade barbs about scuttled tour The 31st annual New Orleans-based event, which ran Friday to Sunday, was peppered with issues from the beginning. According to the news site NOLA, Hill was quietly added to the already inflated lineup just two days before opening night. 'Does Lauryn know about this?' one fan quipped in comments on an Instagram post announcing the addition. Others riffed on her well-known history of tardiness. The festival was reportedly already running behind when contemporary R&B trio Psyrin opened the first day. At the halfway point, GloRilla finished 45 minutes after the next act was supposed to start, NOLA said. So it was little surprise that headliner Hill didn't get onstage until 2:30 a.m. Saturday. She performed to a nearly empty Caesars Superdome — hundreds of people were left instead of tens of thousands — closing with 'Fu-Gee-La' more than an hour later. Though Hill is notorious for starting her shows late, even telling a 2023 audience 'Y'all lucky I make it,' Essence Festival organizers quickly took the blame for this one. "Family is family and around here we protect our own no matter what the PEOPLE have to say,' the organizers said. 'The delay? Not hers. We will take that. The moment? One for the books. The legacy? Still unmatched. Put some respect on her name. Keep the takes, but keep her out of them. All love and deep profound admiration for Ms. Lauryn Hill,' they added. Comments celebrated Essence's 'accountability.' The social media post even received love from Saturday headliner and legend Erykah Badu, who contributed some applause emojis. However, not everyone was over the moon. In an open letter to the Essence Festival on Tuesday, Grammy-winning artist Stephanie Mills voiced her grievances about the event's "overall level of professionalism." 'The schedule and time management were severely lacking, creating a chaotic and stressful environment backstage … the technical difficulties, specifically concerning the sound system, proved deeply problematic,' she continued. She closed out the letter by calling for a 'vastly improved experience' for artists and fans of the festival in future installments. Celebrities Front Row at Patou Spring 2026: Susan Sarandon, Elizabeth Olsen and More

PAGING JOY: At Patou, Joy is not just a legendary fragrance, it's a state of mind. In the run-up to his spring show on Sunday, creative director Guillaume Henry enlisted Susan Sarandon to star in a humorous teaser film in which she receives gifts in her hotel room from a mysterious character named Joy. Eventually, she contacts reception to track her down, demanding: 'Give me Joy.' More from WWD Penélope Cruz Holds Court in Purple Chanel, Diane Kruger Goes Ethereal in Alberta Ferretti and More at Les Arts Décoratifs Ball Celebrities at Ralph Lauren Fall 2025: Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and More Elizabeth Olsen Goes Retro in Patou for 'Today' Show Appearance, Talks Forthcoming Film 'The Assessment' Front row at the show, the Oscar-winning actress reflected on the things that bring her joy. 'Release, freedom, imagination,' she told WWD. It's why she continues to enjoy what she does. 'That's the only reason to do it, really, because it's such an insecure job. But the fact that when you do work, you're part of a collaboration, is what interests me,' the 'Thelma and Louise' star explained. Sarandon will begin rehearsals in August for 'Mary Page Marlowe,' a drama by Tracy Letts to be staged this autumn at the Old Vic theater in London. 'I'm totally intimidated and terrified and excited simultaneously,' she said, noting that it will be her first time on stage in the U.K., and also the first time she performs in the round. 'Your audience surrounds you. I guess the good news is you don't have to worry about blocking people, but I don't really know what that means,' she said. 'Theater in England is so intimidating, because that's where it started, and they can speak so beautifully and quickly, as opposed to Americans that just garble everything.' For Elizabeth Olsen, a good book is key. 'My definition of joy would be being able to not overthink the present moment or what's to come,' she said. 'Reading helps me get back to the moment.' The 'Avengers' star is deep into the fourth book of Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan novels. 'I'm a little late to the game,' Olsen confessed of her summer binge read. Diane Kruger is enjoying traveling in Europe with her daughter Nova. 'I'm feeling a lot of joy these days,' she said. That's despite getting caught up in a French air traffic controllers' strike on her way to Rome this week. 'It's like you live in Europe, you kind of gotta take the good with the bad, right?' she said with a shrug. The 'Inglourious Basterds' actress will head the jury of the Angoulême Francophone Film Festival in late August, and is set to star in the eagerly awaited series 'Merteuil,' a prequel to 'Dangerous Liaisons,' alongside Anamaria Vartolomei and Lucas Bravo. Kelly Rutherford also finds joy in togetherness. 'The first thing that comes to mind is my children and my dog, and I think the people you love,' she said. When she has a bad day, she remembers to switch perspective. 'It's about focus and refocusing,' the actress and style icon said. 'Our minds go on an algorithm, and so it's easy to keep going down one path, but if you change it and shift it, you can start to think more joyful thoughts, because it's always available as well.'
