Assam CM's plea: End remaining Bihu functions
Rongali Bihu, a spring festival, marks the start of the Assamese New Year. The highly popular Bihu functions are organised from mid-April to mid-May.

The Chief Minister did not cite any reason for his call, but the appeal is believed to be related to the ongoing India-Pakistan conflict over the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22.
'Over the past month, we have joyfully celebrated Bihu across Assam through numerous cultural events. I sincerely thank everyone for their enthusiastic participation and contributions,' he posted on social media platform X.
'However, the time has now come to conclude this festive season. I humbly appeal that all remaining Bihu functions scheduled from 10th May onwards be kindly cancelled. Let us bring this vibrant celebration to a graceful close, with the same unity and spirit in which it was celebrated,' he further wrote.
In ethnic conflict-scarred Manipur, the top leaders of the Opposition Congress took out a 'Jai Hind Yatra' in the State's capital, Imphal, on Friday to express their solidarity with the Indian armed forces engaged in the conflict.
Hundreds of party workers participated in the rally led by State Congress president Keisham Meghachandra Singh, former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, and Congress Working Committee member Gaikhangam.
Meanwhile, the security along the India-Bangladesh border in four northeastern States — Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura — has been heightened.
These States share a total of 1,880 km with Bangladesh. Some sensitive stretches of the border remain unfenced.
Night curfew along the border is one of the steps taken to thwart attempts by people to infiltrate, a possibility underscored after the detention of at least 30 Bangladeshi nationals in Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi area over the past few months. Some of these people had come in illegally, while others were trying to go back.
'State security forces and local village defence parties have also been activated, particularly after some Bangladeshi nationals intimidated our border protectors in a sector in the West Jaintia Hills district,' a Meghalaya official said.

The MP further raised several questions to the Haryana Chief Minister such as whether it is illegal for someone to travel from one Indian State to another to work and if not, then why is the Haryana Police force harassing those who went to work from West Bengal. Mr. Islam also asked if Bengali is spoken only by Bangladeshis and has he ever heard the name of Rabindranath Tagore, who was a Bengali and composed the national anthem. A few days ago, West Bengal CM Ms. Banerjee and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had engaged in a war of words on social media on the topic of migrant workers. In another post, the chairperson of the State migrant welfare board added that hundreds of Bengali-speaking migrant workers working in different States have been unlawfully detained and harassed by BJP-ruled State governments like in Odisha, Maharashtra, and Delhi and many of them have even been deported to Bangladesh. Mr. Islam said that he had asked a question about the number of migrants working in other States, which was not provided by the Union government.

‘Repeatedly insults OBC': BJP mocks Congress after Udit Raj calls Rahul Gandhi ‘second Ambedkar'
In a sharp criticism of the Congress party, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia on Saturday accused the grand old party of repeatedly insulting the other backward classes (OBC) community, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who belongs to the same community. 'The most corrupt party held a conference on the OBC society yesterday. Rahul Gandhi himself has always insulted the OBC community and the Prime Minister, who comes from the OBC community. There are many serious charges against him, including corruption, and he is out on bail,' news agency ANI quoted Bhatia as saying. He also questioned the Congress leader's praise for leaders like Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, both of whom he said are facing corruption allegations. The BJP leader further claimed that the Congress party is 'frustrated' by the fact that PM Modi 'has outnumbered the days of Indira Gandhi as PM', adding that Congress is uncomfortable with India's increasing global influence. Congress had on Friday organised the 'Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan', which was inaugurated by party president Mallikarjun Kharge. Cong govt claims guarantee schemes improve per capita income in K'taka
Hassan: Claiming BJP is ignorant about understanding economics, chief minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday claimed that owing to five guarantee schemes implemented by the Congress govt, Karnataka today is at number one position in per capita income in India. He was addressing the gathering after launching several development programmes in Arasikere, Hassan, on Saturday. The chief minister claimed that the main reason for this achievement is the increased purchasing power of the people. "Our guarantee schemes are a major reason for this increase in purchasing power. BJP members do not understand economics, which is why they falsely claim that the state govt lacks funds for development and are spreading misinformation," he charged. Despite attempts to mislead the people with politically motivated lies, the public will not be deceived, said Siddaramaiah, adding the govt has spent Rs 1.2 lakh crores on development projects and Rs 56k crores on guarantee schemes. Siddaramaiah also said that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi clarified his understanding of backward communities during a conference of backward classes in Delhi.
