Universities should serve as sanctuaries of ideas and ideation: V-P Dhankhar

Hans India23-06-2025
The state of education defines not only the state of academics, but the state of the nation, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar said on Monday, calling for universities to grow into sanctuaries of ideas and ideation.
Addressing vice-chancellors of universities at a conference of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), the V-P said, 'When we look back to our ancient history, we are reminded of our rich past. It is time Bharat must build world-class institutions, not just to teach, but to pioneer.'
He also unveiled a commemorative Coffee Table Book depicting 100 years of excellence of AIU in higher education.
The Vice President also called for universities to play the role of social change. 'Our universities are not merely meant to hand out degrees. The degrees must carry great weightage. Universities have to be sanctuaries of ideas and ideation, crucibles of innovation. They have to catalyse big change.'
'That responsibility rests on the Vice-Chancellors, in particular, and the academia in general. Therefore, I appeal to you: there must be space for disagreement, debate, dialogue and discussion. Abhivyakti, Vaad Vivaad, Anant Vaad are inalienable facets of our civilisation and democracy,' he said.
Stressing on innovations, Dhankhar said, 'We cannot remain perpetual students of Western innovation when our demographic dividend positions us as the world's knowledge epicentre. These are not mere disciplines. These are levers of assurance of our sovereignty in all times to come.'
Focusing on the reach of institutions, the V-P said, 'Many of our institutions have remained brownfield. Let us fall in line with the global groove, let's go green. Greenfield institutions alone bring about equitable distribution of these knowledge centres.'
He said there are places that are untouched by the growth of these institutions. A large section of the population is deprived of these benefits on account of distance. 'Let us go in for greenfield institutions in areas that have so far not benefited from such institutions,' he said.
Dhankhar also motivated heads of institutions to promote affordable education. 'Vice-Chancellors are not only the watchdogs, but also impregnable bulwarks to commodification and commercialisation of education, because one of our fundamental objectives to transform the nation is affordability and accessibility of quality education for ordinary people,' he said.
The two-day conference to celebrate the establishment of AIU is themed 'Envisioning Future Higher Education: The Pivotal Role of India'.
The event is being attended by 300 vice-chancellors from across the country. Another 200 VCs will join the event online.
The conference is focused on releasing an action plan for the transformation of higher education and preparing a policy note on 'Future of Higher Education'.

Bad news for Pakistan supporter Erdogan as India and China end Turkey's dream of..., Erdogan is already...

New Delhi: When Turkey applied to join the BRICS alliance last year, Western countries and investors were surprised. The reason for the surprise is Turkey being a part of NATO. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said publicly many times that he wants BRICS membership for Turkey. But very few people agreed that Turkey will get BRICS membership. Which countries form BRICS? Apart from India, BRICS includes China, Russia, Brazil and South Africa. A Brazilian diplomat has said that 'China and India had privately opposed Turkey's full membership of BRICS last year.' He said that 'Turkey is a NATO country and along with India, China also objected to Turkey's BRICS membership.' Why was Turkey denied entry into BRICS? BRICS is often seen as an alternative to G7. G7 is an alliance of Western countries led by the US and this is the reason why no country which is a member of NATO has been made a member of BRICS till now. That is why the doors are almost closed for Ankara, which applied for BRICS membership a year ago. Russia was already not showing much enthusiasm about including Turkey in BRICS. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had said in June last year that after adding five new countries in 2024, BRICS is not interested in further expansion. The five countries that were included are Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates. However, Lavrov had agreed to make Turkey a 'partner country' along with 13 other countries. Why is Turkey's entry into BRICS difficult? Although consensus is required to become a member of BRICS and India has never formally opposed, Turkey's role on the Kashmir issue has always made the Indian leadership apprehensive. Especially when Turkey helped Pakistan during the Indo-Pak conflict in May, it is no longer possible for India to give Turkey BRICS support. That is why Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan participated in the BRICS conference held in Brazil, but the absence of President Erdogan made it clear that Turkey was not considered a serious contender for this platform. Turkey also probably knows that it will not get support from India for BRICS membership. What is the role of Donald Trump? Apart from this, the possibility of US President Donald Trump becoming President again has also made the path to BRICS very difficult for Turkey. Trump has openly called BRICS an 'anti-American block' and warned that if BRICS tries to bring a joint currency, then America will impose heavy tariffs. In such a situation, knocking on the door of BRICS again has become like walking on a double-edged sword for Turkey. On one hand, Erdogan wants to join BRICS and on the other hand, he does not want to spoil his relations with Trump. Therefore, Türkiye's chances of BRICS membership are now considered almost over.
