‘Forget about the baseball stuff, just get healthy': Angels manager Ron Washington on medical leave through end of season due to unspecified issue

Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington will sit the rest of the season out due to an unspecified medical issue, the team has announced. 'He's in good spirits,' Angels general manager Perry Minasian said in a press conference Friday – the same day the Angels suffered a 15-9 loss to the Washington Nationals. 'He understands what needs to be done. I'm not going to go into details. That's for him to tell, if he decides to. But for me, I'm excited for him to do what he needs to do,' Minasian said. 'Forget about the baseball stuff, just get healthy because he's a great human being.' 'He's somebody that you want around,' Minasian added. The announcement comes after Washington, 73, stepped away from his managerial duties on June 20 over health concerns. Ray Montgomery, who has been with the Angels since 2021, will take over as interim manager, and Ryan Goins will step up as bench coach. 'It's obviously tough news and the focus is on Wash and making sure he gets what he needs right now,' Montgomery said, per 'Honestly, it's like a transactional piece. I'm looking at it as we have a game to play today. A week ago, when this started, we had the same mindset, and nothing's really changed. And again, relative to what I was doing prior, it's a lot of the same stuff.' Washington was hired as Angels manager prior to the 2024 season and, before that, coached for seven seasons with the Atlanta Braves. He led the Texas Rangers to two World Series appearances, managing the team from 2007-14.

Phillies' Three-Time All-Star J.T. Realmuto Reveals Retirement Plan

Phillies' Three-Time All-Star J.T. Realmuto Reveals Retirement Plan originally appeared on Athlon Sports. J.T. Realmuto has been a cornerstone of the Philadelphia Phillies for nearly a decade. Now in his seventh season with the club, the 34-year-old catcher remains one of the most respected and accomplished players in baseball, but questions about his future are beginning to surface. Advertisement The three-time All-Star has long been regarded as one of the premier backstops in the game. However, in the final year of his contract and nearing the age of 35, his next move may be shaped by life off the field as it as by what happens on it. 'I do want to play as long as I can,' Realmuto told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. 'I want to keep my body in the best shape I can. I want to continue to have fun. I'll know when it's time to hang 'em up. If I'm not productive, if I'm not helping the team, I'm not going to try to get to the number 40.' Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto (10) reacts while running the bases after hitting a two RBI home run during the first inning against the St. Louis Cardinals at Citizens Bank Streicher-Imagn Images Though Realmuto insists his body feels great, his production has dipped slightly from a season ago with a slash line of .240/.307/.354 through 66 games. Yet, statistics may not be the only factor in his decision to keep going. Advertisement 'If my kids get to an age where they want daddy home… that will probably be a day I hang it up as well,' he said. 'Either my performance or body will tell me first, or my family will.' Realmuto has nothing left to prove and is heralded as one of the best catchers of the last decade. His candid comments make it clear he is not interested in padding a resume and will step away if his play slips or his family needs him home. For the Phillies, that uncertainty could impact the length, value, and likelihood of any potential deal this offseason.
