Manny Machado's late homer helps Padres finish off Mets

Reuters6 days ago
July 30 - Manny Machado clouted a three-run homer Tuesday night to cap a five-run seventh inning that lifted the San Diego Padres to a 7-1 win over the visiting New York Mets.
Machado's 20th homer of the year scored Elias Diaz, whose two-run double earlier in the inning off Jose Butto (3-2) upped the margin to 4-1, and Luis Arraez. It marked the second straight game that San Diego pieced together a five-run inning.
Wandy Peralta (5-1) pitched a scoreless sixth to claim the win in relief as the Padres earned their fourth straight win and upped their lead on Cincinnati for the National League's last wild-card spot to three games.
Neither starting pitcher was involved in the decision. New York's Sean Manaea gave up only three hits and a run over five inning with no walks and four strikeouts, while San Diego rookie Ryan Bergert permitted two hits and a run in four-plus innings, walking four and whiffing four.
The Mets lost right fielder Juan Soto to a left foot contusion in the fourth inning after he fouled a pitch off his foot. Soto completed his at-bat and grounded out to second baseman Jake Cronenworth but departed before the bottom of the inning.
The Padres initiated the scoring in the first via Jackson Merrill's two-out RBI single to right that chased home Fernando Tatis, who led off with a single, moved to second on Arraez's sacrifice bunt and reached third on Machado's fly ball to center.
New York tied the game in the fifth, although it was also a bit of a missed opportunity. Brett Baty and Brandon Nimmo sandwiched walks around a Luis Torrens single to fill the bases with no outs, chasing Bergert.
But reliever Jeremiah Estrada came in and struck out Francisco Lindor before pinch-hitter Starling Marte's sacrifice fly to right cashed in Baty. However, Pete Alonso popped up to strand a pair.
Merrill gave San Diego the lead for good in the sixth when he chopped a triple over Alonso's head into the right field corner, scoring Arraez from first.

Eagles star Saquon Barkley declines invitation to serve on Trump's sports council

Saquon Barkley has declined an invitation to join Donald Trump's council on sports, fitness, and nutrition, which is being revitalized under an executive order. Barkley, the 2,000-yard rusher for the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, was on a list of sports personalities that included golfers Bryson DeChambeau and Nelly Korda, WWE executive Paul 'Triple H' Levesque, football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor and retired New York Yankees great Mariano Rivera. Barkley confirmed on Monday that he had declined the invitation. 'A couple months ago, it was brought to my team about the council,' Barkley told reporters after Monday's Eagles practice session. 'So I'm not really too familiar with it. I felt like that I am going to be super busy. Me and my family thought it would probably be of best interest to not accept that. I was definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned. I'm assuming it's something great, so I appreciate it but was a little shocked when my name was mentioned.' Trump last week reestablished the Presidential Fitness Test for American children, a fixture of public schools for decades that gauged young people's health and athleticism with one-mile runs, sit-ups and stretching exercises. 'This is a wonderful tradition, and we're bringing it back,' Trump said of the fitness test that began in 1966 but was phased out during the Obama administration. The executive order also reinvigorated the national sports council that could have included Barkley. Barkley won AP Offensive Player of the Year last season after rushing for 2,005 yards, eighth-best in NFL history, in his first season with the Eagles. Barkley has golfed with Trump and Barack Obama over the last year and the running back attended the White House celebration of the champion Eagles while some teammates – notably star quarterback Jalen Hurts – skipped the ceremony. Barkley visited Trump in April at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, and caught a ride with the president to Washington on Air Force One and then to the White House on Marine One. 'He loved it,' Trump said then of Barkley's short flight on the presidential airplane. 'He's a great young guy and an incredible football player. Saquon had a season for the ages, running behind the most powerful offensive line in the NFL.' Barkley, meanwhile, pushed back on social media criticism following the visit. He noted that he had already golfed with Obama. 'Maybe I just respect the office, not a hard concept to understand,' Barkley posted on X.

Yankees sign RHP Kenta Maeda to minor league deal

August 5 - The New York Yankees signed free agent right-handed pitcher Kenta Maeda and assigned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday. Maeda, 37, was released by the Detroit Tigers after a rough opening month to the season, in which he threw eight innings of relief over seven appearances and had a 7.88 ERA with six walks, three hit batters and eight strikeouts. Maeda has played parts of nine major league seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2016-19), Minnesota Twins (2020-21, 2023) and Tigers (2024-25). Primarily a starter until joining Detroit, Maeda has a career record of 68-56, a 4.20 ERA and 1,055 strikeouts over 226 games (172 starts). Maeda was runner-up for the 2020 American League Cy Young award after he went 6-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 11 starts in the pandemic-shortened season. The Yankees acquired three relief pitchers at last week's trade deadline but did not deal for a starting pitcher. They released veteran Marcus Stroman to make room for 2024 American League Rookie of the Year Luis Gil, who came off the injured list and made his season debut this weekend. --Field Level Media

Three-time Grand Slam winner Aryna Sabalenka drives fans wild as she poses topless ahead of US Open

ARYNA SABALENKA stunned fans as she posed topless in a new post to her Instagram. In the post, Sabalenka can be seen lounging in swimwear by the pool, winking at the camera and showing off her tan lines in the risque topless image. 6 6 6 The tennis star posted the pictures to her 3.3million followers captioned "A day spent in the sun." The post is just the latest in a string of revealing images shared to her account as she enjoys a rest between Grand Slam tournaments. The world No.1 women's tennis player is now sunning it up in Miami as the US Open approaches. Sabalenka will hope to add to her existing tally of three Grand Slam victories with a victory in New York later this month. The 27-year-old narrowly missed out on a shot at making it four at last month's Wimbledon tournament. She battled past British tennis hero Emma Raducanu in the third round, and looked good value to go all the way. 6 6 6 Her shock semi-final exit to Amanda Anisimova was the third time she had made it to the semis at the tournament, losing on all three occasions. Anisimova would be absolutely crushed in the final by Sabalenka's rival at the summit of the WTA rankings, Polish star Iga Świątek. Sabalenka has better form at the US Open, and is set to try and defend her title when the competition kicks off on August 24th. The Belarusian narrowly saw off American Jessica Pegula to win last year's edition of the tournament. If her demeanour on social media is anything to go by, Sabalenka is feeling relaxed ahead of her return to the court.
