‘Killed it on the spot': Infant bites cobra to death after it coiled around his hands

An infant in the northern Indian state of Bihar reportedly bit a cobra to death after it coiled around his hands.
The one-year-old boy, identified only by his first name Govinda, bit the cobra while he was playing at his home in the small town of Bettiah near the Indo-Nepal border, according to local news reports.
"When we saw the snake in the child's hand, everyone rushed towards him, but in the meantime, he already bit the snake, killing it on the spot," the child's grandmother told local news.
After biting the snake, the boy fainted and was rushed to a primary health care centre for initial treatment, after which he was taken to the town's Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH).
'The boy, Govind Kumar, was referred here yesterday by the primary health centre close to his village where he was rushed by family members after he fainted soon after chewing on the live snake,' hospital superintendent Duvakant Mishra told Indian Express.
The venom's effects were reportedly mild, only knocking the boy unconscious, but not fatal.
"Timely treatment saved Govinda's life," Saurabh Kumar, a doctor of the government hospital, told the Times of India.
"The child's condition is currently stable and treatment is being administered under the supervision of doctors. The medical team is treating the child, providing continuous medication, and he is under observation,' Dr Kumar said.
Govinda reportedly is being closely monitored at GMCH Bettiah with treatment for poisoning expected to start if he started showing any symptoms, according to local news reports.
India has around 300 species of snakes, including 60 highly venomous snakes such as the Russell's vipers, kraits, and the saw-scaled viper, which are responsible for most of the bite-related deaths.
The Indian cobra completes this list of the "big four" species responsible for the most snakebites in India.
The country recorded over a million snake bite deaths in just two decades from 2000-19, according to a study published in 2020 in the journal eLife.
More than two-thirds of the recorded deaths came from eight of India's 28 states, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh.

McDonald's India (West & South), managed by Westlife Foodworld, has unveiled a new offering, the Protein Plus range. It includes a 100% vegetarian, plant-based Protein Plus Slice, which adds 5g of protein to any burger. Its development has involved collaboration with the CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), part of the Ministry of Science and Technology, as reported by The Hindu. The slice is vegetarian, formed from soy and pea, and does not contain artificial colours or flavours. It is also free from onion and garlic, making it suitable for various dietary needs. Westlife Foodworld CEO Akshay Jatia stated: 'We have always believed in giving our customers more choice, and this time, we are giving them the power to personalise their protein intake. 'The Protein Plus range allows them to enjoy their favourite McDonald's burgers without compromising on their protein needs or the taste.' In conjunction with this launch, Swiggy has formed a partnership with McDonald's India (West & South) to offer the Protein Plus range of burgers exclusively on its platform from 24 July to 11 August 2025, as reported by Afaqs. Customers will be able to find these items in the high-protein section of the Swiggy app. The new burger range will be available in 58 cities across Western and Southern India, including Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Mysore. HealthPlix in Expansion Mode, to Enter the US, UAE Markets

HealthPlix is a Series C-funded startup focussing on digitization of healthcare through its AI-powered EMR (Electronic Medical Records) platform for doctors in India. You're reading Entrepreneur India, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media. Bengaluru-based healthtech startup HealthPlix is in expansion mode as it plans to enter the US and UAE markets given the significant opportunity and potential across these markets. "We will probably start with the US as it tends to be a little bit ahead in terms of adoption than Dubai. But at the same time, while EMR adoption in the US is upwards of 90 per cent because they have a mandate for doctors to digitize, they are often not easy to use. So, this is an opportunity for us," Chaitanya Raju, Executive Director and Chief Product Officer, HealthPlix, told Entrepreneur India. HealthPlix is a pioneer in digitization of healthcare through its AI-powered EMR (Electronic Medical Records) platform for doctors in India. The startup currently assists over 12,000 doctors to drive better health outcomes for their patients by providing clinical decision support at the point of care. More than 22 million patients have been treated using the HealthPlix EMR platform by doctors practicing across 16 specialities. About 60-70 per cent of the doctors in HealthPlix's network are in tier-II and tier-III cities, as it provides support in regional languages. "This means the doctor can write a prescription in English, but the patient can get the prescription in Kannada or Telugu or Tamil, whatever the local language is," said Raju. HealthPlix has used Open AI to build its technology stack and now also collaborating with various players within India to start using Indian models. "We are in talks with various players to sort of see if Indian models can be used. There are a lot of companies working on this," said Raju. Unlike some of its competitors, HealthPlix claims to take a 'Doctor-first approach,' empowering doctors with quick prescription writing, user-friendly design, localization in 14 languages, clinical decision assistance, and holistic digitization for doctors' practices. HealthPlix doctor base and network spans across 370 cities in India making it the trusted EMR platform for doctors in the country. Founded in 2014, the startup is backed by marquee Indian and Global investors such as Lightspeed Venture Partners, JSW Ventures, Kalaari Capital, Chiratae Ventures, Avataar Venture Partners, SIG Venture Capital and Blacksoil Ventures. In its latest round, HealthPlix Technologies raised USD 22 million in a Series C round, led by Avataar Venture Partners. Other participating investors included SIG Venture Capital and returning investors such as Lightspeed Venture Partners, JSW Ventures, Kalaari Capital and Chiratae Ventures.
