Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav and other INDIA bloc leaders protest against Bihar SIR outside Parliament
Multiple leaders, including Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav stood at the steps of the Parliament at Makar Dwar and protested against the Bihar SIR, calling for the exercise to be stopped.
Multiple leaders were seen carrying posters condemning the revision exercise, holding placards calling it a "stealing of Indian Rights," "death of democracy," and more.
The issue of Bihar SIR has been a contentious one with INDIA bloc MPs demanding a discussion on it in the parliament.
Earlier, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla adjourned the Lower House of Parliament minutes after it convened for the second day of the ongoing Monsoon Session. Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 12 PM also.
This comes after opposition leaders moved adjournment motion notices in both lower and upper houses to discuss various issues of public importance, including the special intensive revision (SIR) being carried out by the Election Commission (EC) in Bihar ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi also moved an adjournment motion notice in Lok Sabha to discuss the SIR as he expressed concern over the exclusion of Aadhaar and PAN cards from the requisite 11 documents listed by the Election Commission for voter verification.
"Today, in India, where Aadhaar and PAN cards are considered essential for accessing any government scheme, considering them invalid for verifying the right to vote points out to a major concern. The Indian Constitution grants every citizen of India the right to vote. The current documentation demand affects marginalised, rural, elderly, and poor voters, who may not possess the documents specified by the Election Commission," the notice signed by Gogoi read.
Congress' Rajya Sabha MP Akhilesh Prasad Singh has also given Suspension of Business Notice under rule 267 to discuss the concerns arising out of the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar ahead of elections.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission has said that a total of 96.23 per cent of electors have been covered in Bihar SIR, with 5.56 per cent not found at their address so far. The list of electors who have not returned enumeration form or were not found at their address were also shared with the political parties.
On August 1, EROs will invite objections from public for any additions/deletions/ rectifications in draft electoral rolls.
The Election Commission has also said that they will not consider Aadhar card, voter ID car or ration cards as proof for its ongoing Bihar SIR, after the Supreme Court suggested the poll panel to consider the inclusion of the documents.

Let shortcomings in semiconductor sector be avoided in quantum mission: MP
Bengaluru: It is evident from the Union Government's response in Parliament that the Semicon India initiative, launched in 2021 with the ambitious aim of generating one million employment opportunities, has fallen significantly short of its original projections. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Shri Jitin Prasada, revealed that the initiative is now expected to generate just over 27,000 direct jobs, a figure far below the original target set by the Centre. Reacting to this development, Member of Parliament from Raichur and Yadgir, G. Kumar Naik, cautioned that the shortcomings witnessed in the semiconductor sector must not be repeated in the National Quantum Mission (NQM). In a statement, MP Naik observed that the revised employment estimates indicate a substantial gap between announcement and implementation. 'Despite the scale of India's demographic dividend and the urgent imperative of employment generation, Semicon India has remained largely a policy statement with limited tangible outcomes on the ground,' he noted. The MP further expressed concern that excessive centralisation, unrealistic timelines, and delays in procedural clearances have dampened investor confidence, thereby impeding India's progress in the global semiconductor ecosystem. 'It is imperative that the Union Government ensures these challenges are not replicated as we embark on the path of quantum technology development,' MP Naik stated. He added that centralised control, unrealistic timelines, and the shortage of skilled talent were among the major reasons for the underperformance of the semiconductor initiative. Therefore, he emphasised that the Quantum Mission must allow for state-led innovations and a decentralised approach. MP Naik strongly endorsed the proactive steps undertaken by the State of Karnataka, under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister Shri D.K. Shivakumar, who have outlined a clear vision to position Karnataka as a global quantum innovation hub. He also appreciated the coordinated interdepartmental efforts led by Karnataka's Minister for Science and Technology Shri N.S. Boseraju, IT/BT and Rural Development & Panchayat Raj Minister Shri Priyank Kharge, Higher Education Minister Dr. M.C. Sudhakar, and Large & Medium Scale Industries Minister Shri M.B. Patil. 'Such collaboration among departments is a model for quantum-focused governance and highlights the strength of Centre-State cooperation,' MP Naik remarked. 'Karnataka stands prepared to lead a quantum transformation by applying the lessons learned from the semiconductor sector. The State's progress demonstrates the value of aligning national missions with regional capacities and leadership. It is now incumbent upon the Union Government to act with foresight and foster a truly cooperative federal model for the successful implementation of the National Quantum Mission,' he urged.

Indian Embassy in Thailand issues travel advisory amid tensions at Thai-Cambodia border
Bangkok: Amid escalating tensions along the Thailand-Cambodia border, the Indian Embassy in Thailand on Friday issued a travel advisory urging Indian tourists to remain vigilant and stay updated through official Thai sources, including the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) newsroom. 'In view of the situation near Thailand-Cambodia border, all Indian travelers to Thailand are advised to check updates from Thai official sources, including TAT Newsroom. As per the Tourism Authority of Thailand, places mentioned in the following link are not recommended for traveling,' Embassy of India in Thailand posted on X. Due to ongoing unrest along the Thai–Cambodian border, the Tourism Authority of Thailand announced that several attractions across seven provinces -- Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, Sisaket, Buriram, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, and Trat are currently not recommended for visiting. Fourteen Thai people were killed and 46 others injured in military clashes near the Thailand-Cambodia border, the deputy spokesperson of the Ministry of Public Health said. Cambodia had not released any information on its casualties as of Thursday evening, Xinhua news agency reported. In Bangkok, Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin confirmed 14 deaths, including 13 civilians and one soldier, along with 46 injuries. He condemned what he described as Cambodian attacks on civilians and a hospital: "We urge the Cambodian government to immediately halt these war criminal actions, and return to respecting the principles of peaceful coexistence." The violence followed a landmine blast on Wednesday that wounded five Thai soldiers -- an incident that triggered the expulsion of ambassadors by both sides and a sharp diplomatic fallout. Thai officials accused Cambodia of laying new Russian-made mines, while Cambodia dismissed the claims as "baseless accusations", blaming leftover ordnance from past conflicts. Earlier on Thursday, clashes flared in at least six areas along the border, including near the ancient Ta Muen Thom temple. Thai F-16 fighter jets conducted airstrikes in response to what the government said were Cambodian truck-mounted rockets. "It was an act of self-defence," Thai Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura said. The situation escalated following skirmishes that began Thursday morning. Each of the two sides blamed the other side for violating international law. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet urged the UN Security Council to convene an urgent meeting to discuss the matter. Cambodia's Defence Ministry claimed the airstrikes hit a road near Preah Vihear, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and vowed legal action. "The temple was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO... and is a 'historical legacy of the Cambodian people',' Cambodia's Culture Ministry said. Defence Ministry spokesperson Lieutenant General Maly Socheata said Cambodia had "no choice but to defend its territory against Thai threats," insisting the attacks were "focused on the military places, not on any other place". The conflict drew swift international concern. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged both sides "to exercise maximum restraint and address any issues through dialogue," according to UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq. --IANS int/scor/rs
