18-year-old gets 30-year jail term for rape of minor
Thiruvananthapuram: Principal Pocso court judge M P Shibu sentenced an 18-year-old Kollam native to 30 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 40,000 for raping a minor girl after trespassing into her house last year.
The accused, Affsal, of Umayanalloor, had befriended the 13-year-old girl on Instagram. Through their chats, the accused learned about the girl's family details and her location.
The incident occurred during last year's school vacation when only the survivor and her eight-year-old sister were at home. The accused travelled to Thiruvananthapuram and reached her house when her parents were outside for work. After trespassing into her house, the accused raped the girl in front of the younger sister.
Despite the girls' cries for help, neighbours remained unaware of the incident.
The children then informed their parents about the incident over the phone, and the parents soon alerted the police. The accused was arrested in Kollam on the same day and was remanded by the court. He did not receive bail since then, and the trial was completed in a year.
Prosecution was successful in convincing the court about the brutality of the incident and informed the court that the accused posed a threat to society.

On behalf of the prosecution, special public prosecutor Kattayikonam J K Ajith Prasad and lawyer V C Bindu appeared before the court. The case was investigated by Peroorkada station house officers V Saijunath and G Arun. As many as 28 witnesses were deposed by the court and 71 documents and 16 material objects were presented during the trial.

‘Tilak took his last breath in my arms': Delhi cop bids farewell to beloved stallion on his 31st birthday
On the morning of June 14, Constable Atul received a call from a colleague at Delhi's Mounted Police Unit. His seven-year-old stallion, Tilak — who had won a medal at a national sports meet earlier this year — was unwell. Atul, who was at home at the time, rushed to the unit — and found Tilak in pain, kicking his legs. These were signs of an abdominal condition called colic, usually caused by problems in the gastrointestinal tract. Atul and other officials from the unit rushed Tilak to a veterinary hospital near Tis Hazari Court for immediate medical attention. The next day, following an initial round of treatment, doctors referred the stallion to the District Veterinary Hospital in Hisar. Tilak underwent surgery there, but did not survive. It was in the early hours of Tuesday (June 17) when Tilak took his last breath. 'The doctors had asked me to help him walk a few steps, but he soon collapsed. A few minutes later, the doctors said Tilak was dead,' Atul told The Indian Express. June 17 was also Atul's 31st birthday. 'I lost him the same day in my arms,' he said. 'I will always miss him.' Tilak was one of the most active horses in the Delhi Police and was always eager to play sports, according to Atul. 'His nickname was Rocket. He ran very fast and was always excited to play jumping games.' In December 2021, Tilak was brought from the Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC) farm of the Indian Army in Hempur. He was just a four-year-old, then. 'He was purchased for Rs 6 lakh, along with a group of 15 horses, from the Army,' an officer at the unit said. Following training and practice sessions, Tilak was assigned to sports activities, the officer said. He added that the horses in the Mounted Police unit are often used for ceremonial duties, patrolling, and even sporting events. Tilak had won a silver medal in the All India Police Equestrian Championship and Mounted Police Duty Meet 2024-25 held this March in Panchkula, Haryana. 'Tilak successfully qualified in the 'Police Horse Test' category, where he crossed six jump hurdles, a water pond, and a crowd of people and vehicles. This is considered one of the most difficult tests for a horse to pass,' another officer said. With Tilak's death, the number of horses in the Mounted Unit has dropped to 24; the sanctioned strength of the unit is 95. The horses are lodged in the stable yard at the Provisioning and Logistics unit in North Delhi's Civil Lines. They are looked after by 50 staff members, including riders ranging from constables to sub-inspectors. The horses retire upon reaching the official retirement age of 16. They are then handed over to NGOs for further care. Tilak's post-mortem was conducted at the veterinary hospital in Hisar, and the report is awaited. According to a veterinary doctor, colic is a very common condition in horses. It occurs when the animal overeats and is unable to digest the food properly. Sometimes, food or other indigestible material get stuck in the intestines, which can also lead to colic. 'In these conditions, the horse's behaviour changes, and it often starts kicking its legs,' the doctor said.

Rath Yatra stampede: Two senior police officials suspended over negligence, Odisha govt announces Rs 25 lakh ex-gratia
Bhubaneswar: In the aftermath of Puri stampede that claimed three lives, Odisha Government on Sunday shunted out Puri District Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain and Superintendent of Police Vinit Agrawal while two other senior police officials have been placed under suspension. Collector of Khordha, Chanchal Rana and DIGP of the Special Task Force (STF) of Odisha Police, Pinak Mishra have been appointed as Puri Collector and SP respectively, as per a statement issued by the Chief Minister's Office following a high-level meeting. DCP Vishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhee have been placed under suspension for dereliction of duty. Meanwhile, Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi has announced ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakhs for the family members of three devotees, who lost their lives in the stampede. The Odisha Government has also ordered an administrative inquiry into the tragic mishap under the supervision of the Development Commissioner of Odisha, Anu Garg. 'The Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath is the pride and honour of the Odia people. Negligence in this matter, even if minor, will not be tolerated. Exemplary action will be taken against all the persons responsible for this,' said CM Majhi. In another important decision, the government has assigned Arvind Agrawal, Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Higher Education Department, the charge for overall supervision of the Car Festival in Puri. Following the stampede in Odisha's Puri that claimed the lives of three pilgrims, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi extended an apology to the devotees of Lord Jagannath, while ordering an immediate investigation into the security lapses. 'Personally, I and my government seek forgiveness from all Jagannath devotees," wrote CM Majhi on his official X handle. Majhi further expressed condolences to the families of those devotees who lost their lives in the stampede at Saradhabali near Gundicha Temple. He prayed to Lord Jagannath to grant the bereaved family members of the deceased devotees the strength to withstand this profound sorrow. The stampede occurred early in the morning between 4 a.m.- 4.30 a.m. The deceased have been identified as Pravati Das, Premkant Mohanty and Basanti Sahoo.
