Police kill four suspects in Gauteng armed robbery ambush

Gauteng police shot and killed four suspected robbers in Randfontein on Tuesday after a gunfight with officers from the Tactical Response Team. The police intercepted the suspects after the Eastern Cape police's Crime Intelligence Unit shared information that the group was planning to rob a businessman in Randfontein. The businessman was reportedly en route to deposit a large sum of money at the bank. Officers from the Tactical Response Team spotted the suspects' vehicle travelling on Ventersdorp Road. Gauteng police deputy commissioner Major-General Fred Kekana said officers attempted to stop the vehicle, which carried four suspects. 'The suspects opened fire on our members, and the team returned fire. All four suspects were fatally wounded,' said Kekana. Police seized rifles and pistols at the scene. They also found traditional muti inside the suspects' car, including on the seats. Police noted that the vehicle had false number plates. A sticker on the petrol cap read: 'Prayer is the key.' Commenting on the failed robbery, Kekana said, 'Neither worked for them, not their muti nor the prayers. They were doing something they shouldn't have, and even the prayers ended up helping the police.' Drugs, weapons, and liquor seized as SAPS intensifies ongoing metro-wide operation

Police arrested 356 suspects on the weekend during Operation Shanela in Atteridgeville. The August 2 operation, aimed at increasing police visibility and restoring order, focused on the Atteridgeville policing precinct and surrounding areas. 'The joint efforts of this team yielded significant results, with 356 suspects arrested for various criminal offences. This outcome is a direct reflection of thorough planning, targeted deployments, and sustained visibility intended to suppress crime and track wanted suspects in identified areas,' said police spokesperson, Captain Johan Van Dyk. Tshwane District detectives launched the first phase of the operation by arresting 260 suspects, including 65 for gender-based violence-related (GBV) offences, three for murder, three for attempted murder, six for armed robbery, one for perjury, three for possession of unlicensed firearms, and six for rape. The second phase of the operation, executed by uniformed officers, involved a roadblock within the precinct, supported by two operational teams deployed across the area. As a result, 34 undocumented foreign nationals were detained and are currently being processed by immigration authorities for court appearances and deportation, with one person being fined for employing illegal immigrants. In total, 1 240 individuals and 518 vehicles were searched, with three vehicles being verified to determine whether they were stolen. This resulted in the recovery of a motor vehicle that was reported stolen earlier at Pretoria Central SAPS. Police arrested 37 people for driving under the influence of alcohol. One vehicle was confiscated due to non-compliance with the Road Traffic Act and 60 Aarto infringement notices were issued, amounting to R30 000. Targeted patrols and searches were also carried out at 25 identified crime hotspots, further disrupting criminal activity and resulting in the arrest of nine people for public drinking. Two suspects were arrested for dealing and possession of drugs when 417 ziplock bags containing various drugs and an undisclosed amount of cash were found in their possession. Additionally, 32 liquor outlets were inspected for compliance, leading to the closure of 11 establishments due to their non-compliance. This resulted in the confiscation of 3460 litres of liquor and two gambling machines. The SAPS in Tshwane says it continues to maintain its zero-tolerance stance on crime through the continued execution of Operation Shanela across the metro. The SAPS urges residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity by contacting Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or via the My SAPS App. Do you have more information about the story? Rapula Moatshe | Published 2 days ago The police's Operation Shanela, a high-intensity crime-fighting initiative, conducted a raid in Atteridgeville township, Tshwane, on Saturday, leading to the arrest of over 300 suspects for various crimes. Captain Johan van Dyk, Tshwane SAPS district spokesperson, said police arrested 356 suspects and recovered a stolen vehicle during a crime operation. The operation, part of the police's zero-tolerance approach to crime, brought together a multidisciplinary team of SAPS, Department of Home Affairs, Tshwane metro police, Gauteng traffic police, and community safety officials. Van Dyk said the operation aimed to boost police visibility and restore order, targeting the Atteridgeville policing precinct and its surrounding areas. 'The joint efforts of this team yielded significant results, with 356 suspects arrested for various criminal offenses. This outcome is a direct reflection of thorough planning, targeted deployments, and sustained visibility intended to suppress crime and track wanted suspects in identified areas,' he said. He reported that Tshwane district detectives initiated the operation's first phase, arresting 260 suspects. The arrests included 65 for gender-based violence, three for murder, three for attempted murder, six for armed robbery, one for perjury, three for possessing unlicensed firearms, and six for rape. During the operation's second phase, uniformed members conducted a roadblock in the precinct, supported by two operational teams. This, Van Dyk said, resulted in the detention of 34 undocumented foreign nationals, who are now being processed by immigration authorities for court appearances and potential deportation. Additionally, one person was fined for employing illegal immigrants. A total of 1,240 individuals and 518 vehicles were searched during the operation and three vehicles were verified to determine if they were stolen. 'This resulted in the recovery of a stolen motor vehicle that was reported stolen earlier at Pretoria Central SAPS. Thirty-seven persons were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. At least 60 Aarto infringement notices were issued, amounting to R30,000 and one vehicle being discontinued due to non-compliance with the Road Traffic Act,' Van Dyk said. He added that police conducted targeted patrols and searches at 25 identified crime hotspots, disrupting criminal activity. The operation resulted in the arrest of nine people for public drinking and two individuals for dealing and possessing drugs, with 417 ziplock bags of various drugs and an undisclosed amount of cash seized. Additionally, authorities inspected 32 liquor outlets, closing 11 for non-compliance and seizing liquor and two gambling machines.
