New Yalu River Bridge : China-North Korea Conflicts Hidden Beneath the River

By a North Korean Diplomat Defector (Anonymity)
Located on the border between China and North Korea, the New Yalu River Bridge has been completed for over 10 years, yet it remains unopened and abandoned.
However, since last February, a customs building has been constructed on the North Korean side, and construction and maintenance of the surrounding infrastructure have been underway, indicating movement towards its opening.
This change implies more than just the resumption of trade.
The construction of the New Yalu River Bridge was a project led by China under the pretext of expanding China-North Korea trade. When China first proposed building the bridge in 2006, North Korea turned down the proposal due to a lack of actual domestic demand as well as concerns about China's potential military use of the bridge, specifically a possible large-scale Chinese military advance into the North in the event of a contingency.
In 2010, China once again proposed to not only build the bridge but also to fully support the construction of overall infrastructure on the North Korean side including customs facilities, roads, and railways at no cost. This time, Kim Jong-il accepted the deal outright, intending to use it as a showcase for his achievements.
The construction of the bridge was completed in 2014, but China did not keep its promise regarding the infrastructure investment for North Korea, citing budget overruns as the reason.
In 2015, North Korea selected the infrastructure construction in this area as one of the '100 construction targets' and attempted to attract private investment from China to complete the construction, but it fell through due to China's uncooperative stance. As a result, the New Yalu River Bridge has remained a symbol of the lack of trust between China and North Korea, unable to fulfill its intended function for over a decade.
Given this background, what do the recent construction works imply? While they could be interpreted as a signal for the restoration of the strained China-North Korea relations, resulting from the North's closer alignment with Russia, behind them lies the sharp strategic intent of both sides.
First, China will aim to regain its strategic influence over North Korea and promote the stabilization of its northern region.
Rumors that China is funding the construction costs of the customs facilities on the North Korean side currently underway support this assessment. On the other hand, North Korea's primary goal will likely be securing economic benefits through expanded trade with China, based on its confidence in its advanced nuclear and missile capabilities.
In fact, the relationship between the two countries, despite its outward appearance of a 'blood alliance,' is marked by a history of distrust and containment.
When China established diplomatic relations with South Korea in 1992, North Korea felt an intense sense of betrayal, and Kim Jong-il was so enraged that he even ordered to review the possibility of establishing diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
Also, during the Arduous March in the North in the mid-1990s, China, contrary to North Korea's expectations of economic support, deployed elite troops of the People's Liberation Army to the border region. This not only represented a simple economic disregard, but also deepened political and military distrust between the two.
Even under the Kim Jong-un regime, North Korea has been openly expressing anti-Chinese sentiment, referring to China as 'the Chinese' in a derogatory manner in internal documents.
This reveals a deep-seated structural distrust that goes beyond mere emotional outbursts. China, too, has long viewed North Korea not as a strategic partner, but as a subject for 'management' and 'control,' perceiving it as a potential risk factor.
Recently, North Korea has been expanding its political, military, and economic ties with Russia, effectively reinforcing its shift away from China in its foreign policy.
On top of that, the possibility of a US-North Korea summit being discussed adds to China's concern, making it believe that uncertainty is growing in the China-North Korea border.
If North Korea were to break free from China's sphere of influence through improved relations with the US, the China-North Korea border could become a structural vulnerability for China's security. Amid escalating military tensions regarding Taiwan, the uncertainty in the northern region poses a risk that China cannot afford to bear.
In this context, the recent movements around the New Yalu River Bridge may be China's strategic move that even takes into account the possibility of its physical intervention in North Korea.
This bridge is not just a simple logistics infrastructure, but a 'strategic penetration asset' that could be used as a pathway for establishing a pro-China regime in Pyongyang or deploying direct military force in the event of a contingency such as the collapse of the Kim Jong-un regime.
The reason why this bridge has not been used until now may also be due to China's management of it as a 'strategic reserve asset' rather than a regular trade route. Ultimately, the resumption of infrastructure construction on the North Korean side of the New Yalu River Bridge is not just a signal for the resumption of trade. While the construction is apparently being led by North Korea, it is highly likely to reflect China's intention to reorganize its complex relationship with North Korea, and reinforce its strategic influence over Pyongyang behind the scenes.
North Korea has deliberately delayed the opening of the New Yalu River Bridge since the early stages of discussion, aware and fearful of China's hidden intentions. However, recent trends seem to indicate Kim Jong-un's confidence in maintaining the regime based on nuclear power, as well as the urgency of resolving economic difficulties. If the New Yalu River Bridge is opened in the future, we must all pay close attention to how it will be used over time.

He was speaking Thursday at an international conference marking the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Association for the Promotion of Agricultural Cooperation between China and the Central and Eastern European Countries (APACCCEEC), taking place at Grand Hotel Sofia, the Bulgarian News Agency reported. Among the key sectors for investment, Todorov highlighted agriculture, mechanical engineering, automotive manufacturing and parts production, electronics and electrical engineering, information and communication technologies (ICT), and tourism. Todorov noted that relations between Bulgaria and China date back to 1985, when the first cooperation agreement was signed between the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and BCCI. He emphasized that BCCI has been a long-standing partner of the APACCCEEC since its inception, and a memorandum of cooperation was signed in 2016. OPEN// Egypt set to become regional industrial hub across ME, Africa

10TH OF RAMADAN CITY, Egypt, June 28 (MENA) - Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly stressed on Saturday that Egypt is on track to becoming a true regional hub for industry in various sectors across the Middle East and Africa, thanks to its success in attracting leading global manufacturers. In a press conference following the inauguration of the Bosch home appliances factory in 10th of Ramadan City, Madbouly extended his greetings to President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and the Egyptian people on the upcoming anniversary of the June 30 Revolution, describing it as a cherished milestone that set Egypt back on the right course. The prime minister noted that the newly inaugurated Bosch facility represents the third major plant in Egypt's home appliances sector, following earlier inaugurations of the Chinese company Haier and Turkey's Beko. He underlined that these achievements were the result of the Egyptian state's proactive approach, personally reaching out to top executives and convincing them of Egypt's strong appeal as an investment destination. Madbouly explained that the government succeeded in granting these companies direct land allocation and the golden license, while removing all obstacles to expedite the establishment of their factories. "As a result, Egypt is not only becoming a center for local manufacturing, but also a strategic industrial hub serving the broader Middle East and Africa." He highlighted that the inauguration of these plants comes amid intensive efforts by the government and daily follow-up by President Sisi, who is deeply committed to advancing Egypt's industrial renaissance. Madbouly added that the Bosch plant was constructed under the highest international standards and currently employs around 1,000 Egyptians who have been trained to deliver products matching the quality of the company's factories worldwide. He pointed out that half of the plant's annual output of 350,000 cookers is earmarked for export, while local components now account for nearly 50% of the product, expected to rise to 70% within two years. Chinese experts at Al-Masry Al-Youm symposium warn that US and Israel are harming global economy

An assortment of Chinese economic experts from the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences attended an Al-Masry Al-Youm seminar with international experts, where they affirmed that Israel's wars on the Gaza Strip and Iran will impact the global economy. The experts also warned of the negative impact that American tariffs will have on the world, and how Washington seeks its own success over the expense of others. Belt and Road Referring to the importance of the 'Belt and Road' initiative as a step towards a shared future and a path to peace, the experts discussed China's plans to eradicate poverty. They also touched on the revolutionary potential of AI technology and how it can be used to help treat previously incurable diseases. The Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Shanghai, Wu Xiuming, raised the importance of understanding the the 'Chinese Modernization Model,' which aims to eradicate poverty in China. Xiuming also touched on aiding friendly countries to China, such as Egypt, in in its economic advancement through investment projects as well as combating poverty. He explained that there is a common goal through a strategy for all countries, taking into account that each region and nation has its own characteristics. He emphasized that transferring China's experience does not necessarily have to be an exact translation, as each country has a specific population range compared to China, which exceeds 1.4 billion people. Xiuming assured that China has not and will never follow colonialism, and supports 'progress and peace for all'. Thus through the 'Belt and Road' initiative, Beijing is working to promote economic and security peace, and numerous mega projects are underway, such as the Administrative Capital in Cairo. Beijing commended the progress of the projects achieved in Egypt, which will benefit future generations. Xiuming also pointed out that through his visit to Cairo, he is better learning on how to benefit from the Belt and Road Initiative, address obstacles, solve problems, and overcome them. America's tariffs threaten global economic security A Professor of Economics at the Institute of Chinese Studies and Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Xie Yiqing, discussed the issue of tariffs imposed by the US on many countries around the world. China bore the brunt of these unjustified tariffs, which has impacted both the US and China. Despite Washington's 90-day reprieve, China was already impacted within a month. If tariffs are reimposed, it will harm the global economy, with businesses closing and tourism impacted. She explained that China feels responsible and is not against the American government, but warned that Trump's administration is harming the world at a time Beijing seeks to be fair in its decisions. China sees Trump's America as believing that Washington should be the winner above all, while China is working on fair distribution. 'If there is a 'cake,' the US wants to eat it alone, but China wants everyone to eat, regardless of who gets the bigger or smaller piece, but the important thing is that everyone eats and benefits,' she explained. Israel's brutal war harms the global economy An academic and deputy editor-in-chief of the Journal of Social Sciences, Sheng Li, who is interested in the foundations of international trade, said that certain steps lead to the development of the international economy. Although international trade has undergone changes and leaps, there is an optimistic view of international trade, and the evidence for this profitability being achieved. Li however warned that the international economy is negatively impacted by wars, and noted the harm that Israel's war on Gaza and Iran will have on global trade. Yet despite the international conflicts and disputes, optimism in the global economy remains. The benefits of Artificial Intelligence Li explained that in order to develop the global economy, scientific research must be advanced through technological revolution and artificial intelligence in order to promote globalization, which the Belt and Road Initiative is part of. However China will not force anyone to fall under the initiative, and instead it exists to generate profits and provide job opportunities. He called for the importance of long-term scientific cooperation and economic development, which will lead to political stability rather than chaos. Li noted that Beijing is working to embrace AI and harness its potential for greater benefits, as it has already had an impact on everything through research, job creation through innovation, and improved living conditions. The Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Shanghai, Wu Xiuming, believes that AI is a means, not an end. Through its revolution in this field, it has been able to change everything. At Shanghai University and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, transportation research takes at least a week, while the DeepScience AI application has succeeded in completing it in 30 minutes. So it works to shorten the time, and in the midst of the information revolution, it has an impact on energy, electricity, and all jobs. He gave an example of how, in order to advertise a product on the beach, and to work on having a model go, and choosing the appropriate time and circumstances, all estimates indicate that it would take several months to film it, AI has shortened that to just 30 minutes. AI has also made impressive results in the medical field through the analysis and examination of genetic and incurable diseases, and the administration of medications and treatment by entering the medical history of the patient. This means that AI will bring about a strong breakthrough in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, which will be even more accurate. He continued: 'Within the next three to five years, there will be a comprehensive change in artificial intelligence and the revolution it will bring about. However, it will not eliminate jobs or provide alternatives, nor will it eliminate human labor – rather, they will employ it. Therefore, the outlook is not pessimistic, as it will eliminate real jobs. On the contrary, it will eliminate jobs that are useless and will create major jobs that will benefit the international community.' Combating poverty The Chinese experts in international economics at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences emphasized the importance of the Belt and Road Initiative as a step toward a shared future and a path to peace, while also noting China's plans to eradicate poverty. The experts explained that through the academy's research, the concept of 'peaceful development' was emphasized as a Chinese cultural tradition, and that the government is working to combat poverty through self-reliance and hard work. This serves to enhance international cooperation, as history shows that by designing rules, cultural ties, and economic balance, major powers can build a new model of peaceful coexistence, which is what the Chinese Communist Party emphasizes. China's efforts to reduce poverty and achieve common prosperity were emphasized, including prioritizing agriculture, laying the foundation for food security, strengthening targeted poverty reduction to help the rural poor prosper, and promoting rural revitalization through the 'Ten Thousand Villages' project. It is also leading the transformation towards rural modernization, narrowing the 'income gap,' enhancing income distribution, and reforms to reduce social polarization. Experts stressed that poverty reduction remains a common challenge for countries around the world. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Chinese government has launched large-scale and sustained efforts to alleviate poverty, achieving remarkable results. Beijing has succeeded in eliminating poverty for about 100 million people. The Chinese government has put forward a comprehensive vision for China's future development and identified five distinct features along China's path to modernization: livable and vibrant homes, providing several policy measures to boost farmers' income growth, promoting rural work and human rights, developing agricultural production capacity, a new socialist countryside, and issuing decisions on accelerating water reform and development. They pointed out that, according to the National Bureau of Statistics of China, China's total grain production last year reached 707 million tons, an increase of 11.1 million tons over the previous year—a growth of 1.6 percent. This marks the first time that grain production has exceeded the 700 million-ton threshold since then. This has also boosted China's economic recovery and supported high-quality development, and has contributed to the stability of the global food market.
