SNP MPs team up with Tories in protest over oil and gas windfall tax
They have given their backing to an open letter organised by the AGCC, signed by more than 2500 energy industry workers and bosses as well as people whose jobs and businesses depend on the sector, demanding the Government drop its Energy Price Levy.

The levy, due to end in 2030, means the effective rate of tax on oil and gas companies is 78%, according to the AGCC.
This has already cost 10,000 jobs in the sector since the tax was introduced and its continuation will result in 'deindustrialisation and mass unemployment', signatories claimed.
They highlighted the recent example of Aberdeen's Harbour Energy, which announced it would cut its workforce by 25%, some 250 jobs, because of tax pressures.
The letter said: 'Regrettably, we find ourselves in the economically and environmentally incoherent position whereby government policy is bringing a premature end to the oil and gas sector whilst the UK simultaneously relies on increasing amounts of carbon heavy and costly imports from overseas to meet its energy needs.
'The situation is absurd, and we urge you to act now before it's too late. The Climate Change Committee highlights the UK needs up to 15 billion barrels of oil and gas up until 2050 and our world-class oil and gas sector can meet almost half of this, unlocking £150bn to the UK economy.'

The letter demanded an 'immediate end' to the windfall tax, first brought in by the Tories, to 'protect jobs, generate economic growth and greater energy and national security for the UK'.
It added: 'The alternative, added to by the regrettable demise of Grangemouth Refinery, is deindustrialisation and mass unemployment, something any responsible government must avoid at all costs.'
Flynn said: "The Labour Government's fiscal regime puts energy security in jeopardy, it causes mass redundancies and importantly it runs the real risk of ending net-zero ambitions because if you don't retain the vast skills we have in our energy sector today, you lose the people who will deliver the green energy of tomorrow.
'We were promised that Westminster's tax policy would lower bills and see investment in net-zero, but that's clearly not been the case with bills soaring and key projects like Acorn are starved of investment in favour of English sites.
The UK Government was approached for comment.

SNP's £20million spending spree to promote diversity
The SNP 'squandered' almost £20million on ' woke ' ideology while slashing public services, the Tories have claimed. The Nationalist government is accused of years of 'waste' on diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) officials and training courses across the public sector. Scotland's crisis-hit NHS was the biggest spender on the personnel and programmes, despite struggling to recover since the Covid pandemic and record waiting lists. Health boards have splashed £8.9million on DEI training since 2019, including £624,000 at NHS Fife, which was taken to a tribunal by nurse Sandie Peggie after she had to share a changing room with a trans doctor. Councils, universities, the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) and Scottish Government departments spent a further £11million between them on DEI. Total annual costs doubled from £2.1million to £4.3million over the period. The SPS's DEI spend of £751,934 included £9,180 to the controversial LGBTQ rights group Stonewall and more than £725,000 on diversity staff wages. An unidentified slice of the spending was for 'awareness/celebration sessions'. Scottish Conservative deputy leader Rachael Hamilton said: 'This is yet another example of the SNP prioritising ideological projects over the issues that people actually care about. It's no wonder Scots are fed up with Left-wing politicians at Holyrood.' Official figures obtained by the Tories show a total spend of £19,987,747 on DEI between 2019-20 and 2024-25. Of that, £2,480,032 was spent by Scotland's councils; £1,012,806 by the justice system; £8,902,193 by the NHS; £5,899,247 by universities; and £1,693,469 by central government. The largest health board, NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, spent £4.25million between 2019 and 2025, followed by NHS Ayrshire & Arran's £1.3million and NHS Grampian's £1million. NHS Ayrshire & Arran said £780,000 of its spending was on 'translation and interpretation'. But NHS Grampian said it only spent £27,500 on the same issue, while laying out £125,000 on 'professional fees - other'. The highest spending local authority was Aberdeen City Council at £620,640, followed by Angus on £432,000, then Dumfries & Galloway on £348,000 and North Ayrshire on £324,000. Aberdeen said that around half its spending was on 'translation services', but Angus said all of its went on the 'salary for the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Senior Practitioner'. Most of North Ayrshire's spending was on an 'Equalities Inclusion Officer'. Almost all of the £117,391 spent on DEI by Scotland's largest council, Glasgow City, was attributed to 'Purchase of services including training'. Edinburgh Napier University, which spent £2.97million, said all its staff were 'required to attend annual mandatory EDI training and additional role specific training'. The next biggest university DEI spender, Dundee, which recently suffered a financial crisis, spent £1.06million, most of it on pay and about £110,000 on 'training'. Robert Gordon University spent £2,535 on 'celebrating Black History Month and Pride'. The Scottish Police Authority, which controls Police Scotland's budget, spent more than £24,000 learning about 'neurodiversity in the workplace'. A Scottish Government spokesman said: 'Diversity, equality and inclusion roles exist to ensure fairness, tackle discrimination and help build a Scotland where everyone can thrive. This government is proud to stand up for a more equal society.'

SNP ‘squanders' £20m of public money on ‘woke' jobs and training
SNP ministers have been accused of 'wasting' £20 million of taxpayers' money on 'woke' jobs and training in Scotland's huge public sector. The Scottish Tories said figures showed the sum has been spent on equality, diversity and inclusion (IDE) roles and training since 2019. The total included £2.5 million spent by Scottish councils, £1 million by the justice sector, £8.9 million by the NHS, £5.9 million by universities and £1.7 million by the Scottish Government. The Tories said the real total is likely to be much higher, as many organisations said they could not provide their spending as the figure was not held centrally. Rachael Hamilton MSP, the Scottish Conservatives' deputy leader, said: 'Hard-pressed Scots will be outraged that the SNP have squandered millions on woke training and roles, when they are making savage cuts to vital public services. Examples of the spending uncovered by the FoIs include £3,000 for membership of Stonewall's controversial Diversity Champions Scheme and £1,100 on transgender awareness training. The spending was disclosed after The Telegraph reported in February that there are 46 Scottish Government employees with 'diversity', 'equality' or 'inclusion' in their job titles. Kaukab Stewart, the SNP Equalities Minister, said they were on course to cost the public purse around £4 million in 2024-25, the equivalent of £86,326 for each post. It also emerged that more than 6,000 SNP government staff have taken part in 'mandatory annual inclusive culture training' to ensure they all feel welcome and valued in the workplace. Ms Hamilton said: 'This is yet another example of the SNP prioritising ideological projects over the issues that people actually care about. 'It's difficult to justify this level of spending when the NHS remains in permanent crisis mode, educational standards are plummeting, and Scotland continues to have the highest drug death rate in Europe. 'It's no wonder Scots are fed up with Left-wing politicians at Holyrood. They're wasting taxpayers' money like it's going out of fashion.' The IDE job costs were published amid a landmark employment tribunal brought by nurse Sandie Peggie against NHS Fife and Beth Upton, a transgender doctor who was allowed to use a female hospital changing room. Isla Bumba, the health board's equalities officers, told the tribunal last week that the definition of biological sex was 'far more complex' than whether someone had a male or female body. She said she would 'hazard a guess' that she was female, but she had not had her chromosomes tested to find out 'what my own body is made of biologically.' Ms Bumba also said that she did not need to 'know anything' about the body of Dr Upton, who was born male, before advising that the medic should be given access to the female changing room at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, Fife. JK Rowling took to social media at the weekend to accuse NHS Fife of being 'ideologically captured' but placed blame at the door of the SNP government. 'This is Nicola Sturgeon's legacy: a government that publicly backs the hapless, unprofessional, ideologically captured health board that's persecuting a nurse for asserting her legal right to a single-sex changing room,' she wrote. The tribunal is scheduled to resume on Monday morning after NHS Fife released a controversial media statement on Friday afternoon that accused Sex Matters, a human rights charity which is backing Ms Peggie, of 'steering public opinion' on the row. It also said the debate on the case had led to staff receiving personal attacks, including a threat of physical harm and sexual violence reported to Police Scotland. But the board was forced to amend the statement at least twice after Ms Peggie's lawyers accused it of suggesting that her supporters were behind the attacks. A sentence was added saying Sex Matters had not 'contributed to the behaviour or issues mentioned above.' But Russell Findlay, the Scottish Tory leader, demanded that NHS Fife's board, including chief executive Carol Potter, resign over its 'dire' handling of the case. An NHS Fife spokesman said: 'As this is an active legal case, it would be inappropriate to respond to these comments.' A Scottish Government spokesman said: 'It would be inappropriate to comment further while judicial proceedings in an employment tribunal are ongoing.' Ms Sturgeon's spokeswoman was approached for comment.
