Gail Porter: 'I've been at rock bottom, slept on a bench, it's proof we get through'
At 54, Gail Porter is reflecting on a life that has taken her from the heights of TV fame to the depths of homelessness and back again. Now, she says, she is finally in a good place.
'I'm 100% happy,' she tells the Mirror. 'I've got my cat. My daughter's doing brilliantly, she's 22 now, finished uni and is working. I'm working, too, mostly charity stuff, and often for free, but I still worry about the next paid job. After being sectioned and homeless, I feel very lucky. I have great friends.'
The presenter and mental health advocate has never shied away from speaking about her struggles, including the moment in 2011 when she was sectioned under a 28-day order at a psychiatric unit in North London.
'It was terrifying,' she recalls. 'I was drugged up to my eyeballs, sharing a ward with men convinced they were Jesus, and violent patients. It felt like One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.'
In 2014, she hit rock bottom. With nowhere to go, she sofa-surfed for months before sleeping rough on a bench in Hampstead Heath.
'I'd applied for library jobs and charity shop shifts. People said, 'You can't do that, you're Gail Porter!' I just wanted someone to give me a chance. Instead, I ended up on a bench thinking I'd had enough.'
It was a concerned boyfriend who contacted the police, fearing for her safety. 'Four officers walked up and said, 'Someone's very concerned for your safety. We're taking you to the hospital.' I kicked off. I was furious, but I was desperate,' she says.
Long before those dark days, Porter was a staple of late 90s television, hosting Top of the Pops, The Big Breakfast, and gracing the covers of magazines. But her life began to unravel after she developed alopecia in 2005, losing her hair in clumps.
'Friends said, 'You're beautiful bald,' and for a while, I felt invincible, but work dried up. I got asked to do interviews about being bald, unpaid, because you're talking about an 'illness'. I thought, 'This is going to be a bit s***.''
The alopecia came alongside depression and anorexia. 'I lost everything, my house, my career, my confidence,' she admits.
Today, she is in recovery, both financially and emotionally. After being declared bankrupt in 2017, she found stability through her Bafta-winning 2020 documentary Being Gail Porter, and continues to rent a place in North London.
She also campaigns for causes close to her heart. 'It's awful out there,' she says. 'I work with Fair For You to help people pay back loans without crippling interest, and with the Samaritans over the winter, because I know that darkness. Everyone's one missed payday from disaster.'
Despite past romances, including her marriage to Toploader's Dan Hipgrave and a brief fling with The Prodigy's Keith Flint, she has no interest in dating now. 'I don't date. Now, it's all apps and swipes, I can't be bothered. I go to Soho, meet friends, maybe sneak off to a gig, and that's enough.'
She remains firm in her belief in self-acceptance. 'I've had dodgy comments, 'Where's your hair? Why no wig?' Sometimes I reply, 'Why didn't you wear better deodorant?' But 95% of people are kind. I love hugs, I get so many lovely hugs.'

Now, she's embracing a new chapter with the launch of her own wig, 'The Gail', part of Amber Jean Rowan's ethical collection. 'People say, 'Gail, you said you'd never wear a wig,' and I went 20 years without one, but now there's a choice. The first time I put on The Gail, my custom wig, I fell in love. It's not about covering anything up, it's self-expression.'
With stand-up gigs, cruise ship Q&As, a new memoir in the works, and backing Prince William's Homewards homelessness campaign, Porter's life is full once again.
'I've been at rock bottom, from sleeping on a bench to standing on a cruise stage, it's proof we get through,' she says. 'You don't need therapy if you find your therapy. Mine is a spin class. When I was at my worst, I paid £100 for unlimited classes for two weeks and did two rides a day. My friends say I look so fit and happy. It's my lifeline.'
She adds simply: 'I'm not brave. I wake up, put one foot in front of the other, and here I am. That's all anyone can do.'

Emmerdale Dylan's secret 'exposed' as spoiler reveals what he's hiding from April
Emmerdale spoilers appear to have confirmed what Dylan is hiding amid his return to the ITV soap, with secretive behaviour and him ditching pal April Windsor leaving her confused It seems returning character Dylan Penders is hiding something on Emmerdale, with him initially acting weirdly around April Windsor. With the pals reunited this week, it's not long before romance is thought to blossom. But Dylan is covering up more than one thing it seems, with actor Fred Kettle reprising the role after months off screen. First of all he's initially hiding his return to the village, hiding in bushes and being discreet. Not very discreet though given his involvement in the break-in at Moira Dingle's farm, which has left Dylan badly injured. His guilt remains under wraps for now, with Dylan and someone else wearing masks before being caught in one of the barns. Ahead of his motive being explained, Dylan will keep this from April before she realises all about his injury. But there's something else, much bigger, that he's keeping secret. Scenes this week give away that Dylan is caught up in new villain Ray's criminal ways. Ray is also back in the village this week, and spoilers have revealed he's keen to track down the teen. In episodes this week, Dylan will be seen hiding from Ray, and when he spots him in the village he flees. April has no idea what's going on, with Dylan keeping her in the dark about Ray and whatever it is they're up to. He does drop hints during Tuesday's episode about his "job" and a man he is working for, but keeps the full truth out of it. So when she and Dylan are meant to be meeting for a date later in the week, Dylan ditches things to hide away from Ray. So will he be forced to come clean? Secrets continue next week, when Dylan continues to act suspiciously. He's caught out by Paddy Kirk though who realises the troubled teen needs help. That said, Dylan continues to hide from Ray and ignores his messages. When Ray eventually tracks him down he has a job for him, but Dylan rejects this not wanting to get involved. Ray acts like he's cool with it, only to be shown spying on Dylan and April later on. So does April know what's going on at this point, and how long can Dylan keep it all hidden? What exactly is going on with Ray? Given Dylan will be shown with drugs in his bag it's safe to assume this is tied in with the work he does for Ray, after Ray was revealed to be a dealer and selling drugs weeks ago. So for now Dylan is hiding his link to Ray, with no one aware they are linked. He's also hiding some criminal activity, and the fact he works for Ray - but surely it won't be long before the truth comes out. John Torode's 'struggle' with MasterChef co-star Gregg Wallace's off-screen behaviour
John Torode and Gregg Wallace have been BBC MasterChef co-hosts for 20 years - but their behind-the-scenes relationship has been called into question following their recent sacking John Torode found one aspect of his partnership with Gregg Wallace particularly taxing, a journalist who interviewed the MasterChef host revealed. Wallace was dismissed from the BBC programme after 45 complaints against him were upheld. His co-presenter Torode later learned that his contract would not be renewed following an investigation that confirmed he had uttered racially insensitive remarks some years prior. Following their dismissals, anecdotes about the duo have come to light, including one from a journalist who met Torode. Michael Odell of The Times has interviewed the Australian chef on two occasions. Michael recalled: "The first time I met Torode was in 2022 and he described dealing with his erstwhile MasterChef presenting partner Gregg Wallace and his early morning phone calls. It was obvious being woken up at 6am by Wallace in Duracell Bunny 'let's get to work!' mode was not easy." He also noted a recurring sentiment from both interviews, stating: "Both times I came away thinking, 'Why am I not as nice as John Torode?'" Despite their apparent camaraderie on the BBC series, the pair have previously admitted their relationship isn't quite as cordial off-screen. Torode once told the Mirror: "It's funny, we've never been friends. We've not been to each other's houses." He further explained: "If we go away to somewhere like South Africa," adding, "we do things separately ... If we do go out for a drink, I'll invariably be at one end of a big old table and he'll be at the other." John Torode has opened up about the intense clashes he's had with his co-host Gregg Wallace during their two decades of presenting together, admitting they've had "massive fights" over which contestants should stay or go on the show – tensions that didn't always dissipate once filming wrapped. "We've had a couple of standoffs over the years," Torode confessed. "I've just had to walk away from him." Meanwhile, Wallace seemed unaware of any serious issues, as he reflected in a 2017 interview with Lorraine. He explained: "I film with John six or seven months of the year, so we are very close to each other physically, and emotionally we are very close to each other. "What's great about having a partnership is that if one of you is a bit off, a bit down, the other one naturally steps up, so I rely on John a lot." A source from behind the scenes also shared with BBC News: "Clearly they had a good chemistry when the cameras were rolling. But you rarely saw them interact when the cameras were off." Wallace has since apologised for his behaviour, insisting he is "so sorry" but stated: "I am not a groper, a sex pest or a flasher." Torode, aged 60, has refuted an old accusation regarding the use of racist language, stating he has no memory of such an incident and does not believe it occurred. Whatever lies ahead for the pair, Wallace and Torode will appear on screen together for a handful more occasions. The BBC has, following extensive deliberation, chosen to broadcast their final series together from August 6, and may also transmit a Celebrity MasterChef series and Christmas special that are both allegedly completed. Nevertheless, some editorial modifications may have been implemented to minimise the duration the pair feature on screen. A BBC representative stated: "MasterChef is an amazing competition which is life-changing for the amateur chefs taking part. The focus of it has always been their skill and their journey,". "This has not been an easy decision in the circumstances and we appreciate not everyone will agree with it. "In showing the series, which was filmed last year, it in no way diminishes our view of the seriousness of the upheld findings against both presenters. We have been very clear on the standards of behaviour that we expect of those who work at the BBC or on shows made for the BBC."
